Janice Tyler pointed in the direction of Interstate 471 from the parking lot at Newport on the Levee, where a long line of cars were starting to pack in for lunch hour.

"This whole area, it's always like this," said Tyler, 47, of Newport, who was there to eat with some friends. "On the weekends, the whole area is packed. -- At night the ramp is backed up all the way to the highway."

I never even thought of combining it with the northbound ramps.  There's lots of space for expansion there, and that would have to flow better - time the lights right and that might solve the problem with minimal loss of private property.  Hopefully they can make this change soon, because it's currently a very dangerous situation...depending on how you approach, you have to cross 4 lanes of traffic and merge into a lane of stopped traffic, while three lanes of thru traffic try to zoom past...just a bad situation...

They should have to pay for at least half.  I'm baffled as to why people put up with the traffic and pay for parking at that place, then complain about the same things in downtown Cincinnati.  The levee is just so incredibly lame -- whenever I'm there I feel like I'm dying.

Come on.  They've studied that damn area to death since the 1960's.  Also, the Taylor-Southgate bridge is, sans two or three stoplights, a Newport-bound exi rampt off of Fort Washington Way.  Improved signage and promoting that as an alternative route could significantly reduce the traffic.

Yeah, but in downtown Cincinnati, you don't "feel like you're on vacation", which is how somebody described the place to me.   What's so aggrivating is that that long traffic cue that forms on the bridge makes it look like the whole city's going to the Levee when it's just Newport's lousy interstate access.

And speaking of baffling:

When I lived in Clifton Heights, we got on 471 at Liberty and got off at Memorial Parkway. Getting on a Liberty allowed us to be in the left two lanes which are more often than not uncongested, and no one knows that Memorial Parkway turns into E 10th St. Add in free side street parking, and it can be a nice drive.

Personally, I think they could do a better job in informing drivers that Grand Avenue and Memorial Parkway lead into Newport, and are effective and sometimes quicker alternate routes into the city. Additionally, getting off at those exits make it easier to navigate into the side streets and park for free. I wonder how many drivers actually know that Memorial Parkway, Grand Avenue, and US27 all lead into downtown Newport. Making that known could releive congestion slightly, or give people a more visible alternate route.
Think Multimodally. Cars are only part of the equation.

Newport on record: Don't close I-471 ramps
November 5, 2007 | CINCINNATI POST

Newport Mayor Tom Guidugli says he expects the city's board of commissioners tonight to approve a resolution opposing closing Interstate 471 exit and entrance ramps at Memorial Parkway and Grand Avenue in Newport.

The mayor said a closing isn't imminent, but he said such a possibility has been among numerous ideas discussed as state and regional transportation planners try to figure out how to improve traffic flow on I-471.

I'm in favor of Alternate 2B, as it lessens the impact of the Interstate 471 SB offramp to the surrounding neighborhood, and lessens the traffic on the residential streets and Third Street. Instead, traffic will either travel left onto Fairfield Avenue, or to Riviera Blvd., where they can turn right into the city or left towards Fairfield Avenue (going right I assume).

It also provides an ideal connection for SB traffic, and will lessen congestion and reduce weaving, and remove the "temporary" connection.

I also like Alternate 5A although it was dropped from the plan. The "island" of homes is now more continuous, and traffic is fulled towards a traffic circle, which should perform well in ideal situations. I think that during peak times, like rush-hour, could overwhelm it though.
