Senior housing center to close at the historic Park Lane Hotel
By KARAMAGI RUJUMBA
BLADE STAFF WRITER

An independent-living senior citizen facility that operates out of the historic Park Lane Hotel in the Old West End will close its doors at the end of January, the center's operator said.  All the residents must move out by then, and the building will be closed at the start of February, said Mary Sweeny, executive director of Emeritus Assisted Living.  The company has operated the independent-living facility since 1997.

Once one of the hotels of choice for celebrities such as Eleanor Roosevelt, Cary Grant, Bob Hope, and Marilyn Monroe, who all stayed in the hotel when they visited Toledo, the historic Park Lane building is a stately red-brick building at the corner of Jefferson Avenue and 23rd Street.  The historic Park Lane hotel building has 91 apartments ranging from studios to one-bedroom and luxury apartments.

Mayor-elect Carty Finkbeiner said there could be a buyer for the former Park Lane Hotel in Toledo who would keep its 35 senior citizen tenants from being evicted at the end of January.  At a press conference with Mr. Finkbeiner yesterday afternoon, Phil Dew, an Adrian developer, said he has been in negotiations with the retirement home's owner, Columbia Pacific Management Inc., for two months.

This a gorgeous building. I hope it finds a buyer. There are quite a few of these old mid-rise hotels in the Old West End by the Art Musuem that have been converted to apartments or "artist" dorms. I hope it can be successful, and the Park Lane is the best looking of these old hotels in IMO.

From the 5/11/06 Toledo Blade:

Historic Park Lane Hotel gets refurbished
New owners changing building to apartments

By TAD VEZNER
BLADE STAFF WRITER

The Park Lane Hotel in Toledo's historic Old West End is in the midst of a makeover its new owners hope will turn what once was a retirement community into a collection of market-rate apartments and corporate suites.  The sale of the nine-story building at Jefferson Avenue and 23rd Street was finalized last week to Phil Dew of Adrian and Mark Osborn of Onsted, Mich.  Mr. Dew declined to disclose the selling price; a copy of the deed obtained by The Blade lists no selling price.

Built in 1925 of red brick and limestone, the hotel once catered to such celebrities as Eleanor Roosevelt, Cary Grant, Bob Hope, and Marilyn Monroe.  Two of the structure's top floors, including roughly two-dozen units, are ready for tenants and a third floor is being worked on, Mr. Dew said.  In all, the building will have 91 market-rate units, including 65 one-bedroom units that will be marketed for $695 monthly and 26 studio apartments at $495 a month.
