Elyria (pop: 55,953) is the county seat of Lorain County. Elyria shares the same county with a twin city (Lorain) which is interesting, considering at the opposite side of the state, Hamilton and Middletown share the same county as well and are of near equal size. Elyria is perhaps the "cleaner" of the two, as it has a beautiful, functional town square, the courthouse, several highrises, and some stunning historic architecture. Ravines, waterfalls, and the Black River criss-cross through Elyria while beautiful parks dot the city. The home of the sewing machine, Elyria was the home of the first chartered high school west of the Appalachians and the term "hamburger" (weird trivia, I know). In all seriousness, Elyria is a beautiful city and is one of the best cities of its size in the state.
