Chicago, the Windy City, is the country's third largest city at around 3 million people and third largest metropolitan area of around 10 million (regardless of the former Second City status). First it was Cincinnati that was the largest city in the American West until the Civil War. Then St. Louis briefly after the Civil War. Finally, Chicago dethroned the Queen City and Gateway to the West, building tall and staying strong. The home of the first skyscraper, a wonderful lakefront park system, excellent collection of architecture (in the city and suburbs), a very vibrant (and large) downtown, transit options, endless highrises seemingly along Lake Michigan, and so forth, Chicago is the Midwest's global city (and what a grand global city Chicago is). Who knows when Chicago will be dethroned in the Midwest but if Cincinnati and St. Louis are testaments to staying beautiful, Chicago shouldn't have a problem adjusting. Oh, and two words: Sears Tower.
