Louisiana, the Bayou State, is the only state divided into parishes, which are local governments equivalent to counties. The state of roughly 4.5 million is the 25th largest state and is home to New Orleans and Baton Rouge. The state was once a French outpost and still shows its French influence today with the second official language being French and its namesake from Louis XIV (King of France, 1643-1715). Known for its Cajun food, Creole population/culture, and Jazz Louisiana is a place all its own.
