Zanesville (pop: 25,586), the county seat of Muskingum, was Ohio's second capital from 1810 to 1812 until Chillicothe took over (again). Zanesville, 50 miles east of Columbus, sits along the Muskingum River, has a functional downtown, filled with many churches (including the wonderful St. Nicholas Church), wonderful architecture, and the famous Y-Bridge (a bridge with a Y intersection in the middle of the river). The area is full of attractions including the Lorena Steamwheeler, the National Ceramic Museum, the National Road-Zane Grey Museum, the Zanesville Arts Center, and The Wilds, at nearly 10,000 acres, is one of the largest wildlife preserves in the country. Not bad for being a former state capital.
