Southeast Ohio
Southeast Ohio is the state's most scenic region. From the mountainous Shawnee State Park to the rolling hills and scenic gorges of Hocking Hills State Park, southeast Ohio is a celebration of Ohio's rich Appalachian heritage. This is the region where Ohio was founded, where the Northwest Territory was founded, and where the US West began. There are no significantly sized cities in southeast Ohio but it has a wonderful collection of old, small towns with histories that surpass most in the Midwest (and West). Marietta, Portsmouth, Zanesville, Chillicothe, Athens, Gallipolis, and the list goes on and on of Ohio's beautiful smaller cities. Zanesville and Chillicothe were Ohio's capitals before Columbus while Marietta and Chillicothe were the Northwest Territory's capital before they broke apart. The state's most scenic and historic part welcomes all!
