  1. My first recommendation is if you want to do the downtown to Ohio City walk, do it on Saturday in the morning and grab lunch in the West Side Market vicinity (if not in the Market itself). "I do a lot of walking for fun and for fitness, usually 3 to 4 miles a day. I'd like to keep this up while in Cleveland. I was wondering how walkable it is across to Ohio City and Tremont. I know I can take the Rapid to the station by West Side Market but am wondering how walkable it is to and through the Tremont area? Looking at the map it seems Abbey Avenue connects the station with Termont...actually right to that Sokolowski place. Is that do-able as a walk?" From the southeastern edge of Ohio City (West 25th and Lorain, location of the West Side Market and West 25th rapid station) to the northwestern edge of Tremont (West 11th at Abbey, by Sokolowskis) is very walkable via Abbey Avenue. I tend to "hoof it", but I've done it in about 5ish-10ish minutes. I think it's fine, but some might find it rough around the edges - there's a lot of traffic (vehicular and otherwise) so it's safe during most hours. The view of downtown from Abbey Avenue bridge is pretty cool. "By the map I think I can walk across that Detroit/Superior bridge to Ohio City" Yes, you can. I might also recommend a walk south on Ontario to the Lorain/Carnegie bridge (aka Hope Memorial Bridge); Detroit/Superior is a great walk as well but once you are on the west side of the bridge, there aren't a lot of amenities. You have to walk south on West 25th and the northern portion of that street needs some work - again, a busy street so it's safe but it's not "scenic". Plus, I prefer the views from Lorain/Carnegie, not to mention you end up just down the street from the West Side Market. "if there are any things to do there...specifically a restaurant, coffee shop, etc. I know West Side Market is there but what else? Usually when i do these walks I stop off at a coffee shop for a latte or capuccion and then head back...or for lunch or dinner at a restaurant....so looking for something like this." In the immediate area, you have plenty of options - the West Side Market Cafe is great and affordable, there are a variety of vendors who sell food ready to eat - if you go that route, I ***HIGHLY*** recommend getting your food and make your way to the bench in the balcony level (ask the folks at City Roast - they're right by the doorway leading to it). If not, you have great Middle Eastern at Nate's on West 25th. If you want to try Great Lakes Brewing and check out the bullethole in the bar from the days when someone took a shot at Elliot Ness when he was downing a pint, that's right across the street. If you like pale ales or beers with a little bit of a bite, I recommend the Burning River Pale Ale (my personal favorite). "Also, any good local/indy coffee shops downtown?" Erie Island on East 4th Street, and Phoenix on West 9th in the Warehouse District. I'll update this post with maps, links, etc. but wanted to give you some ideas.

It was a black and gold (Guinness and Dortmunder Gold) and yes, it was mine :-) I wasn't quite sure if the "bride/groom" was an actual bride and groom or some artsy photoshoot going on but figured it made for a good shot so why not. "Damn, MayDay you make Cleveland look good." I think Cleveland looks good on its own if you know how and where to look ;-)
  3. Nope, been to Bearden's a few times (not really impressed, especially the burgers) and not on that trip.
  4. I *believe* it's "Cares" as in different forms of care, rehabilitation, etc.
  5. Couldn't have asked for better weather on Saturday... Some appropriately happy music - "Sense" by the Lightning Seeds :-) The view I see so much, the view I never tire of :-) The view that will change to some degree when the new Innerbelt bridge is constructed: The view that hasn't changed for a long time, and half of me says I'm okay with that, the other half wants to see a "big 4" instead of "big 3": Holy parking garage! C'mon, what else can you say about it? Someone on the forum mentioned they didn't care for Key Tower and how it overpowered Terminal Tower; I dunno, I think Terminal Tower holds her own just fine :-) I think I have an eye for detail, but somehow I never noticed the floral ornamentation below the clockdial on the West Side Market clock tower: Alright, enough siteseeing, time for lunch at the Harp - on the patio, of course! Lots of boats out on the Lake: I hope these people appreciate the views they have: Yeah, this lakefront ain't just for tourists! One of the most beautiful color combos - black and gold (Guinness and Great Lakes Dortmunder Gold): I remember passing my drivers test in a 1970 Duster, I can only imagine steering one of those ore freighters under the lift bridge! Serene park in the foreground, big mammoth freighter in the background: Like I said, nice views! Okay so there are a few moments where it's just nice and pretty: And some where it's just a moment: Alright, over we "go go" to Whiskey Island and Wendy Park: The Goodtime III doing its thing: Goodtime and a good chunk of change spent on the boat on the right! Yeah, like they say "Cleveland, ya gotta be tough!" and they might as well start young: The armada waiting for the lift bridge to lift: Off they go! Congrats and best wishes! Just some shots to show why this is one of my favorite spots in town: Apparently I'm not the only one: After the United/Continental merger, this is how we'll be getting out and about ;-) Who knows, maybe we have some future UrbanOhio geeks in the making? :-D Hope you enjoyed :-)
  6. Updates - the Cares Tower looks to be wrapping up: The office tower is well under way:

Okay folks, even *I'm* getting a bit itchy from all this butch talk!
  10. Empire State Building - get a photo of it but go to Top of the Rock for the observation deck. WAAAY shorter lines. Greenwich Village - definitely pay a visit. SoHo - definitely pay a visit. If your wife likes chocolate, take her here - it's not cheap but just buy a truffle or three and she'll be verrrry happy http://www.vosgeschocolate.com/boutiques Little Italy - not what it used to be. Chinatown - worth a visit I suppose. Financial District - a few things worth a visit, notably architecture. Battery Park (departure point for Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island ferry) - worth a visit but I would pass on visiting the Statue; takes too much time South Street Seaport - from what I remember, touristy schlock. Times Square - touristy schlock but you have to go once to say you've been there, done that. I've developed pedestrian rage there (seriously - big crowd of people, the stupidest thing you can do is STOP in the middle of the sidewalk, or not keep your eyes forward). Rockefeller Plaza - definitely worth a visit. There's a Heartland Brewery (chain but oh well) there if you need an afternoon nip. Radio City - snap a photo as you go by, unless you're seeing a show. United Nations - snap a photo as you go by. 42nd Street - you'll likely walk on it anyway. St. Patrick's Cathedral - snap a photo and if it's open, sneak a peek in. Fifth Avenue - lots of shopping, higher end stuff is by Central Park.
  11. It's a no-brainer, and I'm fully in favor of it. Of course the comments section on cleveland.com is filled with the "it's MY choice to recycle or not!" (the same people who b!tch about any perceived wasteful spending) when recycling *saves* the city money versus having trash hauled away, and of course the inevitable "what about the poor seniors?!?"... because of course no exceptions will be made, and any senior citizen who doesn't recycle will be clubbed like a baby fur seal because that's all the city is hoping to accomplish with this. And let's not forget the people who think that all the money the city works with comes from one place and they're free to spend it wherever, whenever, on whatever  There's absolutely no excuse for not recycling the way this will be implemented - it's already been implemented in my area. The city provides the carts, you don't even need to separate recyclables (though they prefer you bag similar items together), and it saves the city money by reducing expenditures for trash hauling.

I'd sell it for $50 and mention you're available for further work. If they land *one* project because someone sees their work (via your photo), rest assured they'll be making way more than $50. That's still a fair price, pays a bar tab, and at least pays you for the time you took to snap the pic.
  13. Definitely bypass the observation decks on the Empire State Building if you're crunched for time. Top of the Rock has an equally amazing view and the lines are no where near as atrocious.

"We unknowingly stayed at a hotel in the part of Cape Cod (P-Town or Provincetown) that is apparently the gay/lesbian resort mecca of the east coast!" How does anyone visit unknowingly Provincetown during the peak of high season?

"Not if you're a straight guy staying at a resort in PROVINCETOWN!" You really ARE an odd bird, aren't you?
  16. I like it, and it might not hurt to try but you have a good definition of the profile and just a glimmer of the light reflecting in the eye. I wouldn't go overboard trying to correct it.
  17. I should clarify - back when the forum had a few hundred members, we didn't need to "make an example" out of anyone. Now, with over 4,200 members (and a sizable amount are active participants), sometimes the best thing we can do is nip things in the bud - unfortunately the fastest way to do that is to dole out punishment and let it serve as a warning to others. Your suggestion of sending an email has been taken into consideration, and I personally think it's a good idea but it's a matter of what our techy-types think is manageable.
  18. The logic is that you see the message when you return, and others realize that giving the Mods grief isn't the best way to start off.
  19. One of my biggest questions is - a major problem with the current convention center are the loading docks, well the lack thereof. When you have limited loading docks, exhibitors and show producers have to pay the overtime that racks up from the trucks idling while waiting for their delivery/pickup. I believe the current total of loading docks is two - now, is it just me, or am I only seeing maybe ten at most*? Sure, it's better than what's there now but from what I understand, the ideal is in excess of twenty. *I'm not an engineer but I'm pretty sure the "sawtooth" area to the right of the blue boxes represents the loading dock area, and if this is similar to other schematics I've seen of other centers, each "notch" represents one loading dock.:

Nah, just a little Mary
  21. ^Agreed; I'm as appalled by Calabrese's comment as anyone, and obviously someone has screwed up royally but the honor-based system is widely used.
  22. If you look closely, you'll see that those threads were locked - likely because forumers can't have civil discourse. Please look carefully to see if a thread has been locked before any further self-flagellation :-)

  25. Good lord... how dysfunctional can it get?!? RTA may fine youths who do not pay to ride the HealthLine or Red Line rapid Published: Tuesday, August 17, 2010, 7:16 PM Updated: Tuesday, August 17, 2010, 7:19 PM Karen Farkas, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- During last month alone, thousands of passengers rode RTA's HealthLine and the Red Line rapid for free -- and it wasn't a promotional deal. The riders -- many of them youth -- boarded without paying a cent. These fare evaders are becoming a headache for the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority. More at: http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2010/08/rta_may_fine_juveniles_who_do.html This quote astonishes me: "General Manager Joe Calabrese said there is "a real hole" in the current system. There is absolutely zero way to enforce fare collections (of juveniles) and it is unfair to the other customers who do pay," Calabrese said at Tuesday's board meeting. "There is no incentive to make them pay."
