Tell me about Gay Ohio life
I think your best bet would depend on your interests, your job opportunities, etc. I enjoy a nice night out at the bars/clubs as much as the next guy but I recommend doing things like volunteering or things like group sports to really meet people. As others mentioned - there are several open and affirming churches in Cleveland, including the United Church of Christ (HQ'd here). There's definitely an active gay community here, yes - Columbus Pride is a much larger event but that's not the best way to gauge day-to-day gay life of a city. I think the scene in Cleveland would appeal more to someone in their late 20s, whereas Columbus (with OSU nearby) might have more appeal to those in their early 20s. I'm not sure of the last time you were in Columbus but they've made a lot of great strides in their built environment - still some ways to go, but definitely improved over the years. Anyway - with Cleveland, most of the places I prefer are "mainstream" bars in neigbhorhoods that attract an eclectic clientele, but I'm in my late 30s and happily exclusive so I'm not the one to ask where the great singles bars are. I've lived in Greater Cleveland since 1993 and I've been open at every place of employment (aka I have my S.O.'s photo on my desk, he comes with me to company functions just like others bring their spouses, etc. - I'm not one to plaster rainbow flags all over my cubicle). Hope that helps :-)

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
Glad to see the two scumbags were nabbed, and hope they get the book thrown at them. Anybody who would pull this kind of sh!t is beyond rehabilitation. 5 people injured by 2 robbers during a movie at Shaker Square Cinemas Published: Wednesday, June 30, 2010, 2:05 PM Updated: Wednesday, June 30, 2010, 7:19 PM Donna J. Miller, Plain Dealer reporter Two suspects who are accused of assaulting five people during a robbery Tuesday night at the Shaker Square Cinemas were arrested Wednesday. Lawrence Butler, 22, and Jazzalyn Primous, 19, both of Cleveland, were arrested at East 115th St. and Harvey Avenue at 12:05 p.m. Police said that Butler demanded the victims' wallets and purses, while Primous struck them on the head with an unknown object, seriously injuring two of the victims. A Point and A Pride (Sandusky and Cleveland)
Definitely not storks - almost 99% sure they're egrets. Apparently the western Lake Erie basin is one of their prime nesting grounds.

A Point and A Pride (Sandusky and Cleveland)
Finally had some chances to get out with the camera, so I decided to put them all in one thread. Some tunes: En route to the Point of the first of this thread, St. Ignatius of Antioch on West Blvd: My favorite part of the trip to the Point, Cedar Point Road with water and weeping willows on either side: Almost there... A skyline shot, not my typical subject though ;-) The Blue Streak and the Raptor: Downtown Sandusky - about as close as we got this time around: The Maverick (foreground) and the Mean Streak: Mean Streak: Mean Streak: Mean Streak and Cedar Point's tallest, the Top Thrill Dragster at 420 feet (as tall as Cleveland's Justice Center): Some folks about to experience the first hill of the Magnum XL-200: The Power Tower: Finally arrived at the Hotel Breakers - the exposure got all wonky but I kinda liked the next two shots: Hey isn't that the crown of Queen City Square, Cincinnati's new tallest building? ;-) My favorite coaster, the Millennium Force: Enough with the rides, I'm a Taurus, and I like long walks on the beach... Some nice beach scenery: And beach fauna - love these guys, so sleek: "It's a hell of a day at sea Lake, sir!" Fly me to the moon... And the sun sets on our day... On the way back, I managed to finally snap a shot that proves you can see Key Tower from I-90 at Clague (in Westlake) - check the third lightpost from the left. Okay, enough of my geeking out: And a shot from I-90 eastbound to wrap up the trip: ***For those viewing at work, a few of the next photos might not be completely safe for work. Nothing you wouldn't see at a beach, a very ECLECTIC beach, but just a heads up*** Another day, another weekend, another skyline shot on the way to Pride: Heading down East 9th Street: Cleveland City Hall shows its support: Almost there: Athough it was a little warm, the weather held up and there was a decent crowd: PUG!!!! Wedding party photos adjacent to the Pride festival... can't say you see that every day! Great backdrop for a festival, don't ya think? One of the most popular spots at the festival (or any festival for that matter), the beer garden: Verandah L'Ni, one TALL drag queen! Tan lines, tsk tsk  Not sure what this was all about: After a few hours we decided to head out: So, feel ______ to leave comments ;-)

Cleveland: TV / Film Industry News
That's not what I take away from the show, though I see what you're saying. I think it's more like the part in the 30 Rock episode where Tina Fey's character comes to Cleveland, gets a call from work and she tries to diffuse her high-strung co-worker over the phone, and she realizes that in Cleveland, she can let her hair down a little. Not saying that I'm seeing this show sweeping the awards and curing cancer, but it's good for some laughs - especially with Betty White's delivery. I mean, we're two episodes in, and it's just the first season - give it time!

Another Dumb-a$$ List / Ranking of Cities
This is the last post we'll have about this in this thread - any questions or responses, that's why we have a "Forum Issues" section. Any post after this about how the forum is run that's posted in this thread gets the perp a month off. There's no nitpicking - Admins are essentially the owners AND bouncers, the Mods are our appointed bartenders. You don't have to like any of them, but you d@mn well have to be respectful when they get after you for giving someone grief. You don't have to agree with a suspension but it's more important to look at why YOU got suspended than why someone else didn't. You don't always see what happens behind the scenes - you don't know who all gets suspended, or reprimanded. It isn't done arbitarily, we have a process that gets input from as many Admins/Mods as reasonably possible. If we gave everyone who got a suspension a chance to state their side, do you have any idea how much time that would involve? We don't get paid to do this. Now, when it's YOU who is in charge of maintaining, organizing and running a forum with 4,000+ members along the lines of UrbanOhio, making sure threads stay on topic, that forumers aren't fighting with each other, and oh - not getting paid for any of it, then you judge whether the system here is extremely flawed.

Cleveland: Greetings from Edgewater Park
In case anyone from Positively Cleveland views this forum (okay, I *know* several do) - allow me to respectfully paraphrase Miranda Priestly from "The Devil Wears Prada" - if you don't contact the forumer 'Florida Guy' to use this photo for promo materials, you're an idiot :-) Florida Guy, when they *do* contact you - be reasonable when you negotiate. That's all ;-)

Cleveland: TV / Film Industry News
I want to thank so many people on this forum who have helped me, inspired me, and encouraged me as a photographer. I love taking photos of Cleveland, but to know that so many people are supportive of my geeky "hobby" is truly humbling. I've been holding off making any official announcement until I saw it with my own eyes - after all, I'm an optimistic realist. I was contacted by the producers of 'Hot in Cleveland' several months ago, about using one of my photos for their show. It took a while, but contracts were signed, compensation arrangements were made, and I kept my fingers crossed. After all, part of the contract read "the producers are under no obligation to use this image, etc.". Well, I attended a private "premiere party" for 'Hot In Cleveland' this evening and sure enough - the producers chose one of *my* photos to use as the opening title graphic. I never, ever imagined something like this happening and want to thank all of you who have paid my photo threads a compliment, or posted your own amazing photos that kicked me out of a rut, and I especially want to encourage others who just like to snap photos. You just never know :-) The original from 2006: Sorry for the odd angle, this was the only area that wasn't so crowded but yep - that's my pic! :-)

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
First and foremost, this was a horrible thing to happen and from what I'm hearing, the victim is recovering. I'd say that with most incidents like this in Tremont, the perps are almost always people from outside the area who know that the area has more wealthy residents, as well as wealthier visitors who are lacking in street smarts. I will say this, not all residents of an area think alike in terms of safety. I'm the first to admit that Pat's isn't really my scene (my punk years were spent in downtown Youngstown in the late 80s), but even so I would never walk alone on Literary Hill at that time of night. Just my personal feelings and in no way am I passing judgement on anyone, it's just not a place I'd feel comfortable. Even though it's very close to some of the priciest real estate in Tremont, that little stretch is poorly lit, there's a lot of overgrown vegetation (aka places for perps to hide), being a steep hill and rough stretch of road, there's not much traffic to begin with, and with the West 3rd bridge closed it's even more deserted than usual. In most areas of Tremont I'm pretty comfortable - I mean, it's not like this happened right outside of Lolita at 8pm during ArtWalk, but there are a few isolated pockets (like this stretch) that I purposely avoid if I'm on foot. It's hard to visualize if you're not familiar with it, Pat's on the left and those aren't PJs along Railway, those are pricey townhomes. From this angle it's hard to really see... So I'm including this - this is at the top of the hill - this is where the lone streetlight is, and Pat's is at the bottom of the hill. Now - imagine this late at night.

Cleveland: Demolition Watch
From Cleveland Area History: "The house is owned by the Ukrainian Museum-Archive, which purchased the house in September. The Museum-Archive is housed and operated in the house and building on the adjoining property, 1202 Kenilworth. The museum wants to demolish the house so that they can use the land for surface parking. With the landscaping that they show in the plan, this would provide for 21 parking spaces." http://www.clevelandareahistory.com/2010/03/demolition-alert-residence-designed-by.html

Cleveland: TV / Film Industry News
The original photo was of Denver, not Cincy and it was only up for maybe an hour before they switched it. I can tell you it was Denver because you could clearly see Invesco Field, the Qwest building, along with the "Cash Register" building, and a few other Denver buildings that only a royal geek (like myself) would know. There are some things I will flub up in my life, but distinguishing the skylines of major American cities isn't going to be one of them. The new (aka correct photo) is indeed from the Flats from the south, specifically near the Columbus Road bridge. The folks at 'Hot in Cleveland' had it changed very quickly after I put in a friendly phone call to the producer. Yes, they have asked and paid for the opportunity to use one of my images - as with any photo licensing contract, there is no guarantee they'll use that image - but I'm hoping that it will be appearing in the series. :-)

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
Folks, either tone it down with the insulting candor or find yourselves with some time off. I *will* say this - clearly the audible signals have rubbed a lot of people the wrong way, including many who want to be advocates for public transit. For RTA to blow it off with "well, other transit agencies think we're doing a good thing" ... what about the rest of us who 1. fund RTA via ridership, paying sales tax and actively petition elected officials to provide more funding for public transit and 2. are directly affected - sometimes 24/7 depending on our address - by the over-the-top catering-to-the-lowest-denominator of "WARNING WILL ROBINSON!!! HERE COMES THE BUS!!!" alerts? I mean StrapHanger has a point - has anyone at RTA or the board of directors tried to sell their home that's located near a corner along a main route?

Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
Those restaurant signs have been up for a while at Sushi 86 and For Goodness Jake's (deli next door) for a while now. I think it is more in relation to the vacant space between these two. Oh thank god; the owners are great people and I saw those signs and was worried sick. Glad to hear they're sticking around :-)
