Thank you AGAIN - some gorgeous and well-kept gems, and one hell of a heartbreaker with the Byzantine church.

Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
Well it was a tie for 1st with Indies in the Colonial Marketplace - and it was a ten-way tie for third place depending on my daily cravings (Octane's black and tan smoothie, Sausalito's Sausalito salad, Teahouse... you get the idea).

I saw the lights out on Sushi 86 on Ontario, and "restaurant space available" signs posted - does anyone know if they're relocating, or have they called it a day? They were in my top 3 lunch spots downtown. :-(

About two months ago, I'm driving east on the Abbey Avenue bridge and people start inexplicably slamming on their brakes ahead of me. Sure enough, a *huge* 6-point buck is just galloping along in the westbound lane - not panic-sprinting/darting - just moseying along staying in his lane better than most drivers!

^It wouldn't be the first time that block has been slated for redevelopment. This is from Richard Fleischman's book and I believe this was a proposal for Gateway. Sorry for the quality of the scan, but you can see the Landmark "gap" on the left; the office tower just to the right where the Stanley block would be: That said, another set of great photos - thanks for posting! :-)- Cincinnati: City versus Suburbs Policy Discussion
You've been on this forum long enough to know what happens when someone decides it's okay to sass a Mod. Knock it off or have some time off.- Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
Folks, tedolph got himself 8 days off because he somehow missed the point that baiting/trolling and otherwise picking fights is a violation of the forum guidelines.- space saving ideas needed for smallish space
WW, I wish I had some of your problem; we have 3K sq. ft. not including the finished basement which makes saving space less urgent :-\ Believe it or not, those vacuum bags (where you fill them up, then attach a vacuum to suck out the air and compress the bag and contents) do a good job for things like linens, comforters, sweaters, etc. I've always liked this set up from Crate and Barrel - I have a small desktop but this would be even better if you only use a laptop: http://www.crateandbarrel.com/family.aspx?c=1101&f=34865 I'd also suggest a coffee table that has storage - not just a drawer, but additional flat surfaces other than the top http://www.crateandbarrel.com/family.aspx?c=985&f=34781 For conserving closet space, I swear by space-saver hangers. I got some at Target; only thing I'd advise is to use them for shirts and lighter-weight pants; jeans, coats might be too heavy.- Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
"But as to Jerry and Jetdog being criticized, I think you all should remember that they're on this site on their own time, and we were probably lucky that they did so at all." Yes, we are always lucky and we're absolutely appreciative when someone in a position like that is willing to field concerns. No one is vilifying anyone but it would be nice to know via a short "sorry folks, we're completely swamped" post. Not asking for apologies or anyone to engage in self-flagellation here ;-) If I recall correctly, their presence here was given RTA's blessing so I'm not 100% sure about the "on their own time" part. In no way shape or form am I lambasting them, but it would be helpful for us to know if something is preventing them from providing responses. I'm not talking about some of the silly or snarky comments made; but when I hear someone extended an offer to help RTA with getting grant money and that person was never given the time of day? When I hear some of the most ardent public transit supporters on this forum voice genuine frustration about poorly designed/maintained/operated components, and nothing is addressed? We (the forum) were given a commitment which we've always been thankful for, but I don't think it's too harsh for us to be disappointed with the recent level of participation.- Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
Folks - while there might be some indirect tie-in on some of these posts, let's keep the thread on topic.- Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
I have to say - I appreciate the fact that RTA made an effort to make UrbanOhio part of their efforts with social media, however I'm a little disappointed in the follow through. I know it's hard for any public entity to keep tabs and be updated on every outlet but we've had some very legitimate questions posed lately with no response. And for the most part, this forum is far more supportive of RTA's efforts than say, cleveland.com.- Off Topic

That's horrible that your friends were held up and I hope the good samaritan recuperates. That area along Detroit west to the west 90s has been rough since as long as I can remember (when Now That's Class was Deco); if friends suggest slumming at the Hawk I try to convince them otherwise. And I'm adamant that we don't park on the side streets or anywhere out of the way. A lot of the holdups are by perps who prey on people coming out of the bars at last call. When you say between Steve's Lunch and the Happy Dog...? One is on Lorain at West 50th and the other is Detroit on West 58th... just wanting to understand the context here - not questioning your account or trivializing your concerns. I think the main drag of Detroit by the Capitol is fine when there's a lot of activity (eyes on the street) but the area to the southeast gets sketchy quick. What's also a problem is that a lot of the perps aren't local residents but word gets around that an area has some wealthier visitors - that's quite often the case in Tremont. Not to say there aren't shady types in the immediate area but you get my point. Whatever the case, I agree that there can't be enough of a police presence around these places.- UO Cleveland Happy Hour discussion
That scene from "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" is NOT that far from reality - "ooooooooo. zoh... :-P "- Moving to Cleveland, working in east 9th. need reviews on nearby apt.
I've heard less than complimentary reviews of the Chesterfield.- Coming back to Cleveland - Advice on Neighborhoods
Based on what you're telling us, my inclination is that you'd like either Cedar-Fairmount or Shaker Square. As far as the commute, I go from Tremont to Lakewood and let's just say that while it's a short commute, it's pretty infuriating at times so I don't even want to think about a Lakewood to University Heights commute!- Yet another moving to Cleveland post!
MyTwoSense, instead of shutting someone down and pointing them to other threads, let's allow them the courtesy of having their own thread, just as we have for so many who have come here for advice. Also, I don't think anyone suggested that the suburbs are utopia, and we don't need to berate someone for questioning something they heard. I'd rather someone ask for clarification than simply not ask at all. ruthanna, welcome (eventually) to Cleveland! First, when people recommend Lakewood or Cleveland Heights, even though they're suburbs, they're historic inner-ring suburbs with plenty of character, not cul-de-sac, strip-mall "burbs". A major reason most people opt for areas like Lakewood or Cleveland Heights is because of the public schools - simply said, Cleveland schools need a lot of work; there are a few good public schools here and there but for the most part, the schools in the 'burbs offer better education and safety. As far as general safety issues - as with any urban/populated area, you'll want to have your wits about you, especially as a female. However, most property crime is "crime of opportunity" so don't leave your valuables unattended, doors unlocked, etc. A lot of violent crime occurs between people who know each other due to regrettable circumstances (drug deals, gang issues, etc.) aka if you don't go looking for trouble, trouble's a lot less likely to find you. You may want to check www.crimereports.com it's an interactive crime mapping tool - note, when you type in an area and see the "flagged" incidents, refer to my previous two sentences. It's do-able to be car-free in *certain* areas of Cleveland (I did for about five years), but you'll want to do your homework and at least make sure you're near either a main transit route or station, and a grocery store in manageable walking distance. I think you've zeroed in on the areas that would best suit you (Ohio City, Tremont, Lakewood, Cleveland Heights); I live in Tremont - while there is some good transit access, due to recent cuts at RTA it isn't what it used to be. Also, there's not a grocery store within Tremont proper though there is a Daves Market in Ohio City along with the West Side Market (google it). Still, it's a great area with a lot of restaurants, galleries, etc. and a pretty diverse base of residents - I think you'd enjoy visiting Tremont but don't know if it's the best match for a place to call home. I'm sure you'll get plenty of advice, so like I said whatever you do - do your homework and you should be fine :-)- 2010: Top 10 Cities for New Grads (CINCINNATI!)
I hear you, and if you'd like, I'd be happy to take a look at your resume - I don't claim to be a miracle worker, but I've helped a few people. My comment wasn't directed at people who have yet to break into the field of their choice - more the ones who are given an opportunity but scoff at it because they think 30s + benefits at age 22 is simply far too inadequate.- Cleveland: westside living?

"Something is wrong if you have to borrow $25k to make $25k ... A lot of finance grads end up at branch banks, which pay a lot less than one might think. That's fine if you got there free and clear but fewer and fewer people are able to do that." At what point did the notion of "entry level" work go by the wayside?- Oklahoma City: Developments and News
It's another corporate tower by Pickard Chilton (architects of Atlanta's Symphony Place, Chicago's 300 North LaSalle and Nashville's Pinnacle); they do a good job at producing pleasantly designed (aka non-envelope pushing but tasteful) office towers. One of their founders was a senior associate with Cesar Pelli, and like Pelli's earlier work, they stick to relatively simple massing with "high gloss" facades like you see here:- 2010: Top 10 Cities for New Grads (CINCINNATI!)
"I don't know how anyone is suppose to get experience if no one is willing to hire someone fresh out of college." At the same time, I've met a lot of fresh out of college types who think they should be earning mid-career salaries upon hiring, and are horrified at the notion of being paid a relatively low wage and working their way up. - Cleveland - Just trying to have some fun!
