I have to ask - does anyone else who regularly travels through the Flats see the "cloud" of gulls floating and realize they have to change their route since it's obvious one of the freighters is heading through the Cuyahoga?

"Next you'll tell me you have no need for Tampax Pearl and Always Infinity!" I believe I asked the parenting types to refrain from icky graphic details to spare us Admins the visuals. Thanks! :-D
  3. One last thing - I was worried when La Tortilla left the space because while their service wasn't the best, they had good food and some fabulous cocktails (blueberry jalapeño mojito for one) which were perfect for their patio during warmer months. Bẳc has some great specialty cocktails that will make up for La Tortilla's absence - notably a Saigon Latte, which is made with Vietnamese-style coffee :-)
  4. Oh - and I should mention both owner and chef came out to see how everything was - service was great; there when we needed them, but not hovering. :-)
  5. Made it to Bẳc in Tremont tonight - an emphatic thumbs up! I had the aforementioned crepe (on the app menu for $7) which was definitely enough as an entree, since we ordered the dumplings and edamame as well. The crepe ($7) was crispy, flavorful, had just the right hint of coconut milk - loved it, loved it, loved it - would order it again in a heartbeat. My partner ordered the bahn mi and shared a smidge; this was my first banh mi, so I don't know how it compares but I was impressed with the flavor and it's a big portion - plus at $6 during happy hour, one more reason to add it to our rotation. Another nice treat was that while they have Dortmunder on tap, they also had a Morimoto Soba Ale which was pretty good - light but with a nutty aftertaste (soba is made from buckwheat after all) -draft beers are $1 off during happy hour until 6:30pm. I also had a Hitachino Nest Ginger Beer (ABV 6.5) which wasn't on the happy hour pricing but tasty nonetheless. They said they've been doing alright - taking baby steps, so here's hoping they can make a go of it :-) http://www.bactremont.com/

Having looked back at the thread, I agree - believe me, ColDayMan has no qualms about letting someone have it but this isn't one of those cases. Cherrypicking quotes in order to pick a fight is a surefire way to get time off. That said:

Okay kids, time to cool your jets! :-)
  8. ^The new dorms are a $65 million project - more $$$ than the student center.

GAH!!!!! :-o :-P :-o Remember - some of us HAVE to keep tabs on every thread - save the graphic details for the campfire tales!!! :-)

I can definitely attest to one way of getting your kids to behave: play rugby, and make sure they watch. It's really effective when they're oh, around 4 or 5 years old and you happen to do a head-on collision with an opposing player, leaving you with a gash on your forehead (and of course blood streaming down your face like a horror movie victim) and the other player a concussion. Of course you have to be helped off the field but the real trick is getting stitched up fieldside and going back into the game 10 minutes later(!!!!). Did I mention the person doing the fieldside stitchup was Mom (she was in nursing school so she knew what she was doing)?!? Yeah, and people wonder why my brother and I never really got into much trouble. Rugby, folks. In all seriousness, I think the biggest mistake parents make today is not putting a healthy amount of fear/respect into their kids. I mean really - trying to "negotiate" with an obstinate toddler because you don't want to oppress his budding emotions? Pffft!!!

"My fiance thinks I'm weird when I stand at the windows and watch the boats go by... she just doesn't get it!" Why does she hate America, freedom and puppies? ;-)

Oh hell YES!!! :banger: :banger: :banger:
  14. "Apparently I need to crop my photos when I upload them for printing." I'd need to see the exact context you're referencing from the site. What I usually do right off the bat is crop the image into the size of print I want, and then make edits and tweaks.
  15. "My tours usually last all day so prepare for that." He ain't just whistlin' Dixie - I can attest to that!

Gotta say - I like their older work a lot more than the current stuff - they still have it, but I don't connect to the newer work as much:
  17. That may be the case, but that's not a reason to get snarky with the Admins and Mods. We *do* understand that topics will have "gray areas" and people will throw out speculations, etc. and we try our best to accommodate that so that forumers can openly discuss ideas, but ultimately our goal is to make topics/threads easily searchable, current and relevant. Not saying you're not allowed to question our methods, but please try to see it from our side as well :-)
  18. I'd heard something about this, but glad you're here to spread the word, Rick - welcome to UrbanOhio. I worked in a mill (just as a go-fer in the offices) for a summer in Salem, and I remember just being amazed by the overhead cranes. Great job on the heritage park!

  20. "Mayday, are you suggesting that there should be a lower standard for the appearance of cancer hospitals?" I wasn't suggesting anything nor was I defending the design of the Ireland Cancer Center; I was asking for examples of "mind bogglingly attractive"* medical buildings in Columbus; and I'm still waiting ;-) *Is this the building you're referring to?
  21. "It's mind boggling how attractive their new buildings are, especially compared to this." I've been to Columbus recently as well - and I've seen some attractive new buildings there, but I don't recall any of them being a cancer treatment center at a major regional hospital. If I'm wrong I'll happily admit it, but I'd like to see some examples.

Folks, there's no "ohhh, well you're not living downtown, it doesn't count" in this thread. It's simply a place where those who DO choose to raise their kids in the city can exchange ideas (without the "OMG! In the city?!?" hysterics common on other parenting forums), ALONG WITH those raising their kids in the 'burbs but want to expose their kids to what the city has to offer that's accommodating of rugrats ;-) Heck, gotribe's post might give someone an idea for a family weekend outing away from the city - even I know it's healthy to get outta dodge every now and then :-)
  23. From crainscleveland.com: Cleveland Clinic plans massive spending campaign in 2010 By SHANNON MORTLAND 10:48 am, February 25, 2010 The Cleveland Clinic will spend $848 million on renovations and construction across the health system this year and is looking for ways to continue to expand its footprint locally, nationally and abroad. Clinic CEO Dr. Delos “Toby” Cosgrove announced those plans during his State of the Clinic address this morning. The new construction projects come on the heels of the $1.2 billion spent in recent years on various building projects, such as the Clinic's $506 million heart hospital, which opened in fall 2008. ....... One thing that's a pleasant surprise - "The Clinic has hired London-based architect Norman Foster to plan construction for the main campus." Or activities/places that urban-minded folks might take their kids, etc. Heck, maybe activities/places that an urban-minded "uncle" could take some of the better-behaved rugrats! ;-)
  25. WOW! Better you than me, but WOW! :-)
