  1. ^I'm hearing that quite a few of their projects - major ones - have been put on hold, according to the updates on the forum at skyscraperpage.com.
  2. Welcome to the forum - it's hard to tell from your description whether you'll be in the Duck Island area (sort of a buffer zone between Tremont and Ohio City), the Clark-Metro area, or Ohio City proper. Either way, as MTS said - you'll want to have your wits about you, just as with any urban area. Most violent crimes occur between people who know each other (i.e. gang/drug related) so the saying "don't go looking for trouble" applies. The City of Cleveland participates in providing information to http://www.crimereports.com/ - you can plug in your address or zip code and get an idea of crimes (type, frequency, etc.).
  3. Fyi, that's the Arcade or "Old Arcade". The Euclid Arcade is part of the Colonial Marketplace complex. Whatever the case, good news since the Arcade's lost quite a few tenants.
  4. ^I can't believe people post their address on their Facebook account and then post updates like "woohoo, looking forward to my two-week trip in Europe!!!"
  5. Any chance we can get photos from a little further away? :-)
  6. Um, OUCH!?!?! From cleveland.com Eaton Corp. might have to pay billions of dollars in damages after losing an antitrust case By Robert Schoenberger, The Plain Dealer October 19, 2009, 6:04PM Eaton Corp. has monopolized the market for commercial truck transmissions, a Delaware jury found last week, and the company could face paying billions of dollars in damages to a competitor. A subsidiary of auto parts supplier ArvinMeritor claims it could have made $800 million selling automatic transmissions for commercial big rig trucks. But when it started gaining share at the start of this decade, Eaton responded by locking all of the major truck builders into long-term, exclusive contracts that effectively locked Meritor's products out, the company says. 7. Okay, so life briefly took my partner and I to DC for a very short visit (Monday to Wednesday) last week. I was busy during the day, but managed to get out for a few shots. My partner did another wonderful job of checking things out and snapping some pics. Anyhoo, here's some music for your listening pleasure: One Love - David Guetta feat Estelle [full song] Early in the morning, coffee was still kicking in so I had the shakes: Unfortunately, my partner likes to sit as far forward as possible. I prefer to sit toward the back because the jet exhaust creates horrific blurs on photos. Ah well, I let him win this one :| Lakewood: Tremont, with the Vortex of Death (aka the West 14th/Steelyard Roundabout): D@mned jet exhaust, couldn't they have cut the engines for a few seconds while I took this shot? :x Oh alright, this one turned out better: I-271 at Broadway/Forbes: The enthralling architecture that is Solon's industrial parks: Lake Milton in the foreground, Meander Reservoir in the background: Berlin Lake - the small hamlet of Deerfield is where all those roads are converging: And at that point, it was nothing but cloud cover until we got to Baltimore: And that was about all for Baltimore: Next stop, the Amtrak station at BWI (since NONE of Baltimore's commuter rail lines were running on Columbus Day - wtf?): Having taken Amtrak a few times before, I would LOVE to have the option to use it for trips to Columbus and Cincy: Anyhoo, about 30 minutes later, we start seeing the outer business districts of DC: And just like Cleveland's Red Line, the local graffiti artists have taken up residence: I get the whole height-restriction for preserving views of the monuments, etc - but ugh. Mo-not-o-nous: Thankfully the interior of Union Station is a treat: The actual Metro stations are a little less ornate: Our destination was Crystal City - not my choice, but hey - this wasn't a leisure trip for me. Gotta say, the only redeeming feature of Crystal City was the fact that it had a Metro stop; otherwise, we're talking pure "business traveler" stuff. Oh, and they had these funky mosaics on the wall of the overpass - yeah, a highway goes right through all this office park mess :| At this point, I had to pass the baton to my partner who set out for DuPont Circle: Alright, enough of that - here's a shot I took on my lunch break. Mo.Not.O.Nous... And back to my partner's shots - he made his way over to Georgetown: I think this is Rosslyn, Virginia - just across the Potomac: I was going through his shots, saw this and thought - did he make a side trip to Prague? :? Nope just some building at Georgetown U: Not all the charm is on such a large scale: Apparently the recession hasn't hit here! Alright, I finally got some free time - here are those mosaics again: I gotta say - I've been to DC before, and I've used the Metro before but it seems like the stations, and *especially* the trains could use a boost in capacity. I've done transit in NYC and Chicago at peak times and never felt as crammed in as I did on DC's Metro: Anyway, after kicking a few idiots out of the way - I made it to DuPont Circle: This tile work is part of the Iraqi Embassy - who knew? But I had to be up early so back to the Metro we went - on what is one of the longest escalators I've ever seen: Next morning, this was as close as I got to any of the monuments - been there, done that, I'll pass: Finally wrapped things up and got some free time so we headed over to Georgetown: Found a cute pocket park sitting atop a steep hill: Nice views from here: Yeeeeah, not so much.... We wanted to check out Dumbarton Oaks and gardens but they operate from 2pm-6pm; so the lovely folks at Tudor Place got our tourism dollars instead: Just down the street was this cute couple - LOVE the Halloween decorations! And then there was this... thing: Ah, much better: But it was time to retrieve our luggage and head back: The lady at the MARC train ticket counter loved us - we had IDs and payment ready. She said "where have you been all day, I need more travelers like you!". We said "Cleveland. We don't mess around!". :-D Back to BWI - not sure how those people got up there to tag: Another batch of cloud cover between BWI and CLE, but hey, got a shot of Independence: And signing off from SouthPark Mall, hope you enjoyed!
  8. Not that it's an apples to apples comparison, but the Tower Press building (which was successfully rehabbed) had a full sized tree growing through its roof at one point.
  9. "The only utility required is electricity." Maybe by the user/tenant, but it's likely that the city would require plumbing (sprinklers), etc.
  10. ^Any chance you could present that message without the sanctimonious/preachy tone?

What buildings do you have in mind?

"Guard your loins kids - It's going to be a bumpy ride!" If you're going to mishmash your movie quotes, at least get them right. It's "gird your loins" and "it's going to be a bumpy night". At least Meryl Streep wouldn't flub her lines like that. That's all.

The doo-doo has hit the fan and is now starting to splatter... Bribery charges filed against construction exec, nightclub operators By Mark Puente, The Plain Dealer October 08, 2009, 5:22PM CLEVELAND, Ohio —The corruption probe that has gripped Cuyahoga County government for more than a year -- but played out exclusively in federal court -- made its way to state court Thursday when five local businessmen were charged with bribery. The FBI investigated the Cleveland Building and Housing Department earlier this year. Agents then turned over the case to Cleveland police this spring and said state charges could follow. 14. Alright folks - consider this an official warning - anyone who posts off-topic in this thread again(especially in continuation of the "glaring Boca pedestrians/whitewashed/racism" conversation WILL get one week off. That includes responding to THIS post. UNDERSTOOD?
  15. Apparently it's "let's get every thread off-topic" week here at UrbanOhio. Thanks folks - LOVE spending my time cleaning up your mess!
  16. ^A chocolate bar (with martinis, etc.), actually: http://clevelandepicure.typepad.com/cleveland_epicure/2009/06/chocolate-bar-coming-to-cleveland.html
  17. Looks like that might not be enough - granted, this only covers those who went to Tri-C but still... :| http://www.cleveland.com/news/plaindealer/index.ssf?/base/cuyahoga/1254904218122030.xml&coll=2
  18. ^Good to know, but also one of those many many many cases in Cleveland where it would be in RTA's (or whoever is responsible) best interest to put up some nominal "Site of the future ______!" signage.
  19. Okay, I had two beers at dinner and I don't think I'm nearly sloshed enough for EC's post to make any sense. :drunk:

That's not my dream house - though I do like the "compound" feel of it with the iron fence! I'm already in 3K sq. ft. (not including a finished basement); I've told my partner that our next place will be smaller.
  21. The Red Line is "Heavy Rail", and only a subway under Tower City.

As rockandroller said, they get walloped a lot worse with snow - and when you have a 30 mile drive to downtown? That's a LOT of time spent behind the wheel and I loathe commuting. The absolute furthest I could move from the general downtown vicinity would be 8-10 miles and even that's pushing my limit.

RnR, I think that might be a house designed by William Trout - he's known in the area for the quirky/rustic style.
  24. I know that RTA has been installing the newer shelters all over but is there a reason that the shelter at West 14th and Kenilworth was removed and not replaced yet? Combined with the royally screwed up schedule that the #81 has (it now goes all the way from Tremont to Lakeview Terrace - more than doubling the usual commute time from Tremont to downtown), I know of quite a few people who are considering giving up on RTA for their commute.
  25. Yes and no - at 2:30 they say (as part of Ohio City's amenities) "easy access to public transportation and do a quick pan of the West 25th station. Could have (and should have) been more in-depth but it *was* mentioned/referred to.
