  1. Well they've demolished just about anything else that's historically worth mentioning along that stretch. Thankfully it will be replaced by... ah screw it!
  2. 1. City Year http://www.cityyear.org/cleveland.aspx 2. They're selling essential oils (patchouli, etc.)
  3. ^I don't know, but it wouldn't surprise me considering the building looks half-collapsed rather than in the process of demolition.
  4. Oh WOW, these are great - it's bittersweet to see this shot, specifically one of the now-demolished buildings along the south side of St. Clair Ave. in the Warehouse District:
  5. Folks - whatever the case, if you want to start a "How the City/Owners/Cops/Smurfs Ruined the Flats" thread in City Discussions, by all means. But this thread doesn't need to be a catch-all for waxing nostalgic or conspiracy theories. Thanks.
  6. "we are going to schedule the next Edgewater Park cleanup for Saturday, Sept. 3rd at 11:00am." September 3rd? I'd love to help but I don't have a DeLorean that goes 88mph! ;-)
  7. "we took the biggest tourist draw in the midwest and mowed down the builidngs" Who is "we"?
  8. Sign on Dragonfly Lounge said "Opening Oct. 2009" (might have been a specific date but I was running errands and didn't have time to confirm).
  9. Cares Tower still going; the tower crane has been taken down:
  10. Expansion of the museum continues - this is the view of the west wing; looks like some foundation work is happening:
  11. OCPM is on the way out :-(

I don't take pride in being a jerk to a kid, and I do feel bad about what happened there. If I'd realized what she was up to I'd have politely told her no thanks at worst, but she seriously looked about 25. I've had door to door sales people that were quite pushy, so I tend not to be nice to them. I understand that they are just trying to do a job, but they, like telemarketers, have chosen a profession that requires them to annoy me when I'm at my home, so I feel no compulsion to treat them with dignity. If I can make a door to door sales person cry, or a telemarketer hang up on me, I do take pride in that. Oh, okay. So you are bragging about being a dick. Good to know. Keep up picking fights and you'll have another timeout.
  13. jman, I saw some of the complaints you did (via google search); it should be noted that almost all commercial fitness clubs require a signed contract in order to get discount rates. It's just like renting an apartment - if you pay month-to-month, there's a premium; if you sign a lease, you pay less. I can't speak for the issues of being able to cancel membership, but that's a good sign that you should ALWAYS read the fine print and if it seems sketchy, go somewhere else. I also saw that one reviewer of Fitworks downtown said "theft is rampant!" - well I won't deny that any fitness center experiences that - even the community center in my hometown of 11K has had problems; but I can't tell you how many times I go into the locker room, open an unlocked locker (thinking it's available) and lo and behold - some naive idiot has put their things in without using a lock. Not just their work clothes, I'm talking wallets, cash, credit cards, cell phone, Blackberry - you name it. Part of me feels bad, but if someone is so absurdly naive that they don't think they need to use a lock...

Since we've established that Rusty's visitors were scammers, I don't feel bad about sharing another anecdote. About 10am one lovely fall day - there's a pounding on the door; there's glass only on the upper most portion but I could see the tops of three peoples heads... and what looked to be the ends of axe or broom handles?!? The pounding continued even further and harder and panic was setting in. They were whaling on it pretty good - thank god it's solid oak. I stepped over to the parlor where there's a mirror strategically positioned so you can kind of see who is at the door, not all of them but from the torso up. I saw three teens holding these "sticks" or "clubs" or whatever; laughing and still pounding on the door... I grab the phone to dial the police when they abruptly stopped and walked away. As they were walking away, I finally got a full view... of them... and their rakes. They were going around offering to rake leaves.
  15. Thanks for the offer but we needed it about a week ago - it should be back online soon.
  16. Not in THIS thread you don't!
  17. ^I'm inclined to agree - there's also a lot of existing parking there, and hopefully any additional parking would be concealed below grade. There's a big flap in Pittsburgh because their newest casino (The Majestic) has an enormous garage attached to it, and it sits at a prominent spot on their riverfront. In no way, shape or form should they be allowed to build a concert venue along with it - there's the TC Amphitheater right there, Nautica not far away, and House of Blues a few blocks over.
  18. ^Forest City Enterprises owns Scranton Road Peninsula (at least 90% of it I believe).

But then you can open the door, holding a baseball bat - point it at them, point it at the sign, and say "can ya READ?!?" And yes Rusty, it's a scam.
  20. Nope that's fine for discussing here (as a component of Flats East Bank - but aquarium-specific chat should go in the existing thread), and ditto on "I didn't realize that project was still a possibility enough that they'd be having serious talks with Wolstein".
  21. "a building that once held the title as the state's tallest" Not sure where they're getting that info - Cleveland's Rockefeller Building was built in 1903 (230 feet tall), and there are two Burnham-designed buildings in Cincy that were built in 1903-1904ish that are even taller.

Wow, talk about a resurrection! I no longer use that camera, but glad you like the shots! :-)
  23. One thing that's definitely been explained ad fricking nauseam is this ridiculous idea that a development that's been negotiated, contracted, planned, subsidized for ___ site should just be thrown out and plopped on over to whatever arbitrary site that would be "better". In most cases and especially in theory, YES, it would be much better to plug some of the holes closer to the core of the CBD - no one with any modicum of good planning sense would deny that, including me. I'd love to see every block from West 9th to East 9th infilled with the absolute best of kick@ss mixed-use, corporate, you name it - but at the same time I'm not going to p!ss and moan that we might actually see a new building go up outside of that area. However in this place known as reality - as IF it's just a matter of "well gee, they got funding to build this 20-story office tower and hotel at Flats East Bank, screw all that - it'd be better to put it on Public Square!". I agree that a masterplan - a solid, comprehensive one, is needed but that wouldn't cover everything, especially something like this.
