Cleveland/Northeast Ohio - Where are some good Salsa dance clubs?
Just my experience - if you see "Salsa Night" advertised at a relatively mainstream club, expect to see one or two couples (usually friends of the owner) tearing up the floor and everyone else pretty much velcro'd to the wall watching them. Oh, and forget carrying on a conversation if it's with a live salsa band. Again, just my experience - one I *wanted* to enjoy but ugh. I have a feeling I'd have had a MUCH better time in the more authentic spot albeit its location in a MUCH sketchier neighborhood.

A Home Repair Scam, Right?
^Honestly, a lot of people are raised that initially being polite supercedes any jadedness, streetsmarts, etc. Coming from a small town, I totally get that - but having lived in the city for a while, you develop a sense of awareness and you can see/smell them coming from a mile away, and don't mind if you're thought of as stand-offish or crotchety, etc. Screw 'em, I'd rather they leave people alone than think they're pushovers. Of course, there's the other end of that - when I see groups of teens congregated, my first thought is "ain't nothing good gonna come out of that." Well one time I saw about more than a dozen hanging out near one of the churches (Tremont has one on every other block); I'm thinking "oh for crying out loud"... and then realized it was that church's youth group gathering for a service field trip Another time, I hear this commotion outside - a lady yelling at a girl or girls, I couldn't tell - and in case I needed to call the po-po, I look outside to see if I need to kick some @ss. It was the 90+ yr. old neighbor lady who I know, admonishing her Pomeranian for barking at some people out walking their baby in a stroller.

Cleveland: Flats East Bank
"And for the office building - would of been nice to have it down on one of those 3 or 4 blocks of surface lots from public sq. to the warehouse district. So many blocks of surface lots in the city core that could really use something like this." True, but Wolstein doesn't control any of those blocks. Kinda hard to build on a lot you don't have absolute say over.

Lakewood: Faerber/Morse House
to bad it's not on the eastside. It's a nice property. If it was near UC it would be a prime flip. Yeahhh, too bad it's just a block south of the Lake

True, but it's not "only in Cleveland": http://www.nypost.com/p/news/regional/your_net_loss_Qz1qBFFuTuAysV3Be1rEOJ http://www.brooklynrail.org/2009/04/editorsmessage/fair-is-foul http://www.thepittsburghchannel.com/news/2900939/detail.html http://www.postgazette.com/pg/08225/903549-53.stm http://hamptonroads.com/2008/05/downtown-norfolk-hotel-project-expands-gets-westin-brand

Pet Peeves!
^Allegedly from the German heritage of Cincy: http://www.bbc.co.uk/languages/german/lj/language_notes/bitte.shtml Once they moved to the States, they kept the tradition but swapped the language. That's what I've been told anyway.

You could tell her that I actually agree with you there

It's mortality - the Irish side of me totally understands that joking about it can be oddly therapeutic.

Pet Peeves!
That explains sooooo much! Very much like my wife, always finding fault with me! Before I was married, I had every type of pasta available in the kitchen cabinet! Never know when you might have a rigatoni or fusili attack! Now I have bags of potatoes all over the place!! When she's really mad, the German comes out! I'll have you know that the following is currently in my pantry: rigatoni (small and large), angel hair, whole wheat angel hair, linguini, penne, orzo and Israeli couscous for wedding soup. In the fridge, there's bocconcini, cavatelli, grated asiago, grated parmigiano-reggiano, and of course, plain ol' fresh mozzarella. In the bread bin is a delicious loaf of rosemary focaccia that's getting devoured tomorrow. Maybe if you stopped having faults for her to find, she'd have more time to properly go shopping for the things you like! ;-) :-D

Big Red Scary Box!!! (re: Copyright issues)
^That thread's actually okay - the images are from studies, and the info posted is from press releases or other sources that are kosher. Folks, if there's a press release, it's fair game, as are newsletter announcements (i.e. XYZ Development Corp. has announced in the recent XYZ Development Corp. newsletter that ____ are being built).

To those who have offered help, thank you so much. Because of the volume, we may not be able to clean those threads you've worked on right away - but thanks to your efforts we should be able to get those threads back online quickly.

Sorry to sound like Mary Lou Retton - AND another thing... if you're selling food at a festival in a neighborhood known for 1. incredible diversity and 2. incredible food, aka Tremont Arts and Culture - people attending festivals like that want to try a little bit of this, a little bit of that. I mean, you have a wonderful variety of different groups offering different cuisine, so most people want to sample a few options - not fill up all in one spot, or all with one cuisine. So when the ONLY thing you offer is a combo plate of bulgogi, kimchi, etc. ... :?

I'm of Irish-German descent... so DUH, I ordered a second beer. Does that mean you can remove the first glass that still has a sip or two left? I believe the phrase is "No. H#LL no!!!" I didn't scar the gal too bad - obviously she's new and that's okay - but dear holy god folks. If you're going to be a server at a place serving good beer - the people enjoying said good beer want to enjoy every. last. delicious. precious. drop. Removing the glass before that last drop is consumed? Don't say I didn't warn ya.

Cleveland: A Christmas Story Museum
St. Catharines is actually much closer to Buffalo/Niagara Falls than Toronto, same province but not the same metro area. And yes, the people in St. Catharines care quite a bit since I believe the Christmas Story House has a partnership with a group there that also shares an interest in the movie. They'd probably be the first to tell you that they're not Toronto ;-) Regarding the neighborhood around the Christmas Story House and Museum, which is part of my block club... Yes, just like the northern section of Tremont was a royally mixed bag fifteen years ago, the same can be said for the southern portion today. There are well-kept rental doubles next to shoddy absentee owned rentals, next to long-time residents' homes in need of polish next to some large Victorians that are part of the Tremont home tour. That's just Tremont - it's a mixed bag, like it's always been; most of the time that's good, other times - maybe not so much. As a resident, I'd rather have quiet, respectful neighbors in a shabbier home than obnoxious disrespectful ones in new construction. I'd rather have a vigilant modest-income neighbor who has lived in the area for 40+ years than a high-income renter with absolutely no interest in the neighborhood other than being close to the bistros/bars. I'd rather have a friendly well-run neighborhood bar with a local owner like the Clark Bar than some ultra-modern trendy nightclub that makes living here unbearable. Sure, if it were up to me, I'd write a check and help those who need to fix up their properties but that's not reality. What IS reality is the Holmden-Buhrer-Rowley block club is part of the city's Model Block Program. I'm not sure of the exact details but I'm pretty sure it involves grants to help homeowners fix up distressed properties. I can definitely say that I've seen a lot of work on the housing stock south of 490; not at breakneck speed, but over the years it's palpable. And that pace is fine because it doesn't result in the uglier part of gentrification where long-time residents are forced out because they can no longer afford to stay put. I've come to know some of the "lifers" and you will never meet anyone who gives more of a sh!t about this area than them. Keep in mind that not too long ago, you wouldn't go into Tremont without packing heat - but now, both the northern section (with restaurants/galleries/festivals) and the southern section (the Christmas Story House) manage to draw people from all over the region and then some. "The corner of Rowly (don't know if that is how it is spelled) and West 11th where there is a brick store-type house/building combo." That would be the Rowley Inn, which is a neighborhood joint popular with blue-collar types (after all, it's right up the hill from the steel mills).

Cleveland: A Christmas Story Museum
The school scenes and others were shot in St. Catherine's, Ontario - not Toronto.

Urban Ohio "Picture Of The Day"
That's a good one - doesn't matter if it's three stories or three hundred feet, you can't go wrong with a building shot paired with a sky like that.

The Official *I Love Cleveland* Thread
A great interview with Danielle DeBoe, who owns Room Service in the Detroit-Shoreway neighborhood: From cleveland.com Boutique owner Danielle DeBoe exults in her love of city: My Cleveland by Sarah Crump, The Plain Dealer Danielle DeBoe speaks in capital letters and sees Cleveland just as expansively. There is "SO MUCH," she said, that is great about Cleveland's Detroit-Shoreway neighborhood. That's where she founded a boutique, Room Service, in a section she is helping to revitalize -- the Gordon Square Arts District. Thousands come to her semiannual shopping-music celebration, Made in the 216, which toasts fashions and accessories made by local designers. (DeBoe is planning the next Made in the 216 but said it will last the entire month of November.) Get ready for even more city boosting by DeBoe, 32. She is creating a Web site with local photographer Billy Delfs that will feature Clevelanders and their civic contributions. Big Red Scary Box!!! (re: Copyright issues)
Okay, we've made a LOT of progress on a LOT of threads but we still have some work to do. If any Cleveland-area forumers (or those who pay a lot of attention to those threads) are available between now and Monday afternoon, and are REALLY detail-oriented, please send me a PM. What you'll be asked to do - review some of the larger threads (such as the Convention Center/Medical Mart thread - not ALL of it, we'll break it down and spread the work), and let us know if you see anything that isn't kosher. We can discuss details later, but just wanted to get a headcount. And if you're NOT available, no need to send a PM saying "I'd love to help, but..." - the sentiment's nice but right now we just need to know who CAN help. Thanks again everyone for pitching in!

Cleveland: Downtown Aquarium
Well, SURE - except that by law, the city is not allowed to spend that money on anything other than business development loans.
-
Cleveland: Flats East Bank
I recall the initial designs for the building (no actual rendering was released that I'm aware of) being described as "undulating glass curtain wall" - I'm guessing that's been value-engineered out. The new rendering's not bad, but I'd like to see more of it - different angles, etc.

Cleveland: 2009 Mayoral Election
I've only heard Bill Patmon speak when he was running for mayor a while back; I don't know much about him other than his campaign literature. He seemed articulate, but aside from what he's done in his immediate area, I think he has a lot of work to do to develop any relevance citywide.

Cleveland: Commuting from the Eastside
In most cases, there is a sign stating something about "Traffic Photo Enforcement" just before the area the camera covers, along with markings on the road.

The Censoring is getting out of control
The Mods *are* held accountable - and those discussions are usually handled in the Admins/Mods section. Now your choice - move on and drop it, or have a few days off so we can get back to what needs to be done. This has already taken too much time out of our day.
