Cleveland: Random Development and News
^^If you've noticed some of my update photos for the Terminal Tower restoration (it's a lot of pages, so understandable if you didn't), you can see where they've done work on the main shaft. The most easily visible example is how some panels are bright and beige while others look "sooty", for example:

Thanks - as to your question (and doctabroccoli's), I wish I knew. I'm just so glad to see it in such good shape without all the scaffolding on it.

Cleveland: Random Development and News
Alright folks, as promised. Well, looks like there's been quite a turn of events... here's what they've done with the Terminal Tower :-| According to my sources, they "missed a spot" and had to reconstruct the scaffolding to reach it. That's the bad news; the good news is that they'll have the new scaffolding down in about two years. JUST KIDDING!!!!!! :-D Yes indeed, they have almost all the scaffolding off the upper levels. This took me back to the day I first remember seeing this building (at age 6) and thinking it was the most beautiful building I'd ever seen with my own eyes. I am one d@mn happy Clevelander to see our landmark looking so great after the restoration - I know Forest City gets flak, and I see the Terminal Tower just about every day, but they did a fantastic job with this restoration - I can't help looking at it now. Enjoy :-)

What is your name?
I should never read this while drinking anything. Just was not expecting that...although I guess I should have. Well, Bubbles, thank you for that uplifting information. Even on weekends I am just plain Mike Sorry if you ruined your keyboard ;-) Oh, and my name's Shawn. However, if there's ever a forum meet - I'm much more likely to remember someone's screen name - sad but true.

YOUNGSTOWN - The Good, The Gorgeous, and The Ugly
Went over to Youngstown to hang out with my best friend (she works downtown). This isn't one of my best sets, as it was raining most of the time I was downtown - so I was jostling a golf umbrella, my camera and the occcasional lens switch, and the lighting wasn't ideal. Ah well, can't win 'em all. Your soundtrack for this post comes from Lady Miss Kier (born in Youngstown) - most of you probably know her as the lead singer of Deee-Lite ("Groove is in the Heart) The Paramount Theater has looked like that for as long as I can remember: The George Voinovich Center (left) and Mahoning County Children's Services Center - replaced a department store that had been vacant for a long time: The former Phar-Mor headquarters - now callled 20 Federal Place and home to several established and/or upstart companies: Looks like the neighboring building could use some TLC: The rain REALLY started coming down so I thought I'd see if I could get some shots of the Mahoning County Courthouse - it's currently under renovation so no shots of the scaffold-covered exterior :| But I managed to get a shot or two of the rotunda :-D Anyway, back out into the rain we go... First National Tower - Youngstown's tallest and probably the first skyscraper I can remember seeing - I was about four years old at the time: Across Market Street is the Stambaugh Building - another in need of TLC: The Federal Courthouse, designed by Robert A.M. Stern Associates - of the newer buildings in downtown, I'd say this is my favorite: My favorite angle of the First National Tower: Who'da thunk? I wonder how successful it is: The Realty Building on the left is now market-rate apartments: One more First National Tower shot! Okay, make that two: In the details: In the background, the belltower of St. Columba Cathedral is getting rehabbed; in the foreground is the Michael Graves-designed Youngstown Historical Center of Industry & Labor http://ohsweb.ohiohistory.org/places/ne09/ My old stomping (well, pogo'ing) grounds: Heading west on Federal: A cute trio of buildings: The Home Savings and Loan building at the western edge of the skyline: I had a few more minutes until my friend got out of work so I zipped around the area. Looks like St. Columba is blessing the Industry and Labor Center: One of the newest "tall" buildings in downtown - the Mahoning County Justice Center: Up to Wick Park... where some of the beautiful grand homes are in decent shape: Others not so much: There are a few bright spots, the last time I was in Wick Park - this apartment building was boarded up: But on a side street, there was this: Which was across from this: Which was next to this: And oddly - next to these: Anyway - it was time to meet my friend - she'd never been to Fellows Riverside Gardens in Mill Creek Park. After visiting, she's seriously considering getting married there: Oh - fortunately the sun came out while we were there: View from the library at the Davis Visitors Center - note that it's overlooking the treetops and Glacier Lake: Glacier Lake: A small garden path adjacent to the Davis Center: Over to the rose gardens: And another overlook of Glacier Lake: The roses weren't at peak, but there were plenty of gorgeous blooms: I wonder how many people have been married or have had their wedding photos taken here? And just some flora shots: Okay, there's fauna AND flora: One more overlook - this time showing Stambaugh Auditorium and Stambaugh Stadium (home to the YSU Penguins!) But it was time to head home - one last shot, with the art deco Isaly's (UHaul) building and the Home Savings and Loan building in the distance: Hope you enjoyed :-)

Now now, they have such accomodating hours (1pm-4pm, Wednesday and Sunday) - obviously they'll need such a huge swath of land to accomodate all those, umm, err ... oh I give up.

Steubenville, Ohio
I would actually say it is one of the more depressing towns I have ever been to. I however am not the type to be able to appreciate towns that have alot of possibilities when they actually will probably not see much come to fruition. The job market is pretty dead there, I believe the city is under 40,000 people, and youngsters really don't want to stick around unless they work in the power plants along the river. What absolutely boggles my mind is that Steubenville's downtown (a few mid-rises), infrastructure, neighborhoods, etc. are reminiscent of a city the size of Canton, Warren, etc. but its population is much closer to places like Salem, East Liverpool (aka small towns that peaked at 20K and are both around 12K now).

Good job by a fellow UrbanOhioan!- Pet Peeves!
how about texting while walking?? This should be outlawed in NYC!! One of these days someone's not going to be so forgiving to the next narcissistic idiot who blindly walks into someone or absentmindedly dances around on the sidewalk with their precious "hand-held device," interfering with with the flow of pedestrian traffic. Come to think of it, if I thought I could get away with it... :shoot: :shoot: :shoot: Sometimes if I see one of those oblivioids texting while walking and not looking up ONCE, I purposely stop dead in my tracks, and they walk into me. After all, I wasn't the one moving - so how could they be mad at me? :-D- Cleveland: Cleveland Museum of Art Expansion / Renovation

Well as someone from a tiny family (just my folks and my older brother; no extended family - grandparents passed away) who is coupled with someone from a huge family (my partner has nine siblings most of whom have kids, some of those kids have kids, and his parents' families are large as well so there's a bazillion cousins, uncles, nieces/nephews) - the following sums up my feelings whenever we have get-togethers: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r4iofIQTX7o#- The Baking / Cooking / Recipe Thread
