  1. Just like the modeling scams that pressure people into shelling out $$$.

^It's probably on the bedroom floor at your last trick's place.

True, but you can use a light box for the same effect, and not get skin cancer and early aging from it. :) *Ahem*, one thing about not reproducing? Instead of saving up for their college tuition I can treat myself to some laser resurfacing and whatnot when the need arises :-D And honestly, what's the point of living to be 110 if it means being pasty?

Tan in a tube? No thanks - I'm not from Jersey.

^Pfft - studies have proven that in moderation, tanning can be very helpful for Seasonal Affective Disorder; and MUCH more importantly, I go tanning (just enough to get a hint of color, not George Hamilton) so I can travel to warm-weather places and not be beet-red after the first day at the pool.
  7. If a thread goes off topic with 15,000 people reading, it's STILL going off topic. I love how people say they respect this forum and how it's moderated - well guess how that came to be? It's not just a zero-tolerance for spam, or for blatant trolling - it's also for keeping threads organized and making information easy to find. When a thread is taken off-topic, it f#cks that latter part up - am I clear?
  8. Yes - this thread has had some more cerebral discussion but folks, it's "Cleveland: General Business/Economic News/Events".
  9. Each one of you off-topic people owes me a god d@mn six-pack of Burning River.
  10. Folks, it's an article by Joel Kotkin. Remember that name, and then remember that he's one of the most anti-urban pundits out there.

I absolutely *adore* the Watkins Vocal remix of "Breathe In"

Thank you everyone :-) Emotional? Not quite. We're fine as long as everything within our "pasture" is fine - but muck with the pasture (or anything or anyone in it) and you're toast.
  15. SuperKid, keep taking this thread off topic with posts like that will get you some time off. Got it?
  16. Does everyone realize that blogger is on this forum as arenn? His example of this area's lack of regionalism is the I-90/Lear Road interchange issue in Avon, and he says "a great city needs great suburbs" - well, here - those suburbs are Cleveland Heights, Lakewood, aka densely built inner-ring 'burbs the likes of which aren't in abundance in Indiana. Yes, this region needs to promote regional cooperation but not at the expense of the city and inner suburbs. Enhancing highway access for an ex-urb like Avon constitutes sound *urban* planning? Maybe to someone like Robert Moses or Al Porter, but in 2009 that simply demonstrates lack of fundamental understanding of how regionalism works to benefit an entire region in the long-term. Instead, he points to Avon and its growth on paper as a reason that "gee, Avon's doing something right, so why can't Cleveland just say 'sure, spend our money on an ex-urban interchange". Definitely a case of consider the source, folks - I could armchair and blog all day based on what I find on the interweb without ever setting foot near any of these places but that would give me about much as credibility, now wouldn't it? What next, should we be paying serious attention to the weekly Forbes poll?
  17. ^This has been posted in the demolitions thread.
  18. Welcome in advance - it sounds like you have a good feel for what you want, and have found two areas that are a good match. You should know that there's a "gray area" between Tremont and Ohio City called "Duck Island". If you recall where the Velvet Tango Room is - *that's* Duck Island. 1. I would say that Lincoln Park in Tremont trumps the green spaces available in Ohio City's desirable areas. I live in Tremont and from personal observations, Lincoln Park works for anything from toy breeds to big pups who need some room. Also, there's a dog run in Clark Fields in the southern end of Tremont which seems better for larger dogs. Whatever the case, I can highly recommend the Gateway Animal clinic on Abbey Avenue - located at the northern end of Tremont, but easily accessible from eastern Ohio City. 2. Cleveland's gay community is well represented in both Ohio City and Tremont. Mind you, it's not so much a case of every gay person flying a rainbow flag on their home, but Ohio City and Tremont both possess a sizable gay community along with an inclusive "vibe". I live in what's considered a fringe area of Tremont and there are five gay-owned homes within a block so that's saying something. 3. This is where Ohio City would be better than Tremont - but specifically the eastern area of Ohio City close to the West Side Market (West 25th and Lorain). Tremont has a few buslines that run from downtown through the neighborhood but no rail service and the Ohio City buslines have a higher frequency late at night. However, the western fringes of Ohio City aren't in walking distance of transit or grocery stores, so keep that in mind. Whatever the case, be aware that Cleveland has a car-sharing service called CityWheels, and that a taxi ride from downtown to Tremont/eastern Ohio City is relatively cheap. 4. I'd say if you're skittish, buy some pepper spray and if you're out at night be on guard, and I'd say that no matter what city you're discussing. If you keep to main routes, you probably won't have any problems in Tremont or the areas of Ohio City I recommended. To get an idea - and it's *just an idea*, not a completely accurate representation, check this site: http://crimereports.com/map/index/?search=+Cleveland+OH and look at the Ohio City and Tremont areas over the course of a week's time. Just remember that there's "truth in context" i.e. a lot of crimes are committed by/between people who know each other. If you have any other questions, feel free to post them or contact me via the forum's private message system. :-)

Speaking of bar pet peeves - when practically every single one of my usual spots swaps out the respective favorite beer on tap*: Southside - instead of Burning River, they're pushing Great Lakes Grassroots Ale *hork* (it's like beer + chamomile tea). Prosperity - instead of Bells Two Hearted IPA, it's now Dogfish 60 Minute (any place that has an IPA on tap, it's usually Dogfish which is so-so but it's no Two Hearted) Lava - instead of Mad Hatter IPA, oh who knows what the hell it is - I just know it ain't the Mad Hatter. Anyone who says "oh pish posh, just try something different the next time" will be banned for six months. Anyone who suggests Magic Hat #9 will get their eyes ripped out and thrown in the punch bowl. I'm a Taurus (aka creature of habit) of Irish-German descent (aka beer swilling genetics) - do NOT f#ck with my beer selections! *Just a heads up folks, this means I'll probably even more p!ssy over the next few months. Don't say I didn't warn you.
  20. So THAT'S what they were filming down on Quigley a while back! I drove by on the way to Steelyard and saw four squad cars with lights on and about a dozen or so people milling about with cameras/filming equipment and a few trailers like you'd see on a studio lot. Didn't see LeBron, but oh well - after seeing it, it looks like they were only filming the guy saying "filthy vicious, ridiculous".
  21. I've always thought of it as Cleveland's answer to Detroit's Michigan Central Station - a rather large, yet isolated derelict structure that's a very visible eyesore. I'd be very disappointed if this building's architecture was worth mentioning, but aside from angled rooms offering lake views it's not very remarkable.

"Then the lecture began, all about caffeine being immuno-suppressive and I was in a very fragile, vulnerable state and it could endanger my life." I can only imagine whatever poor nurse who is assigned to me - the loved ones will be sneaking in good coffee, good beer, and chocolate-dipped coconut macaroons. And I pity the fool who tries to give me grief about it!
  23. I dunno, it has one or two spots worthy of a mild chuckle but we (UrbanOhioans) have had threads funnier than that video. What's sad is that I've heard some people say they thought it was fricking hilarious - talk about low standards.
  24. Folks, I'm not sure why it is that every year - this poll from American Style magazine comes out and people go apesh!t. As I've explained before, American Style focuses on fine crafts (i.e. art glass, ceramics and pottery, art jewelry, handmade crafts, furniture), not "THE ARTS". For the love of all that's holy, for future reference - please remember that this poll should be given the same attention/effort/respect that's given to the lovely polls produced by Forbes - and that's the big "0".
  25. If this thread gets taken further off track, there are going to be some people finding something else to do for a week. Agree to disagree, show some respect to the forum moderation, or find somewhere else.
