  1. Oh, he knows - every labelwhore in Ohio knows about that place
  2. Congrats to Avogadro - he called it out first. Yes folks, happy April Fools :-D Sorry if anyone's feathers got ruffled - no harm intended - notice that I always post a link to any stories on cleveland.com (and this one didn't have a link). Honestly, the Terminal Tower being all residential?!? A 35-story office tower on Scranton Road?!? I've removed all the posts that followed the April Fools post (I've left that for anyone who missed it - but as I said, it's totally made up for April Fools). Back to our regularly scheduled discussion of the Convention Center/Medical Mart.
  3. The following is purely fiction - Happy April Fools! :-) ............. Oh geez, NOW they finally come out with this?!? Gotta say this is surprising! From cleveland.com: Forest City Enterprises offers alternate Convention Center site In the latest turn of events in the efforts to bring a Medical Mart and convention center complex to downtown Cleveland, executives at Forest City Enterprises have revealed yet another possible site - the long-neglected area known as the Scranton Road Peninsula. Dave LaRue of Forest City's Land Management group states "this is by far the most ideal site for both the city and the region". Formerly home to warehouses and a variety of interests serving industries linked to the Cuyahoga River, the Scranton Road peninsula is comprised of approximately 300 acres, mostly vacant. LaRue says the convention center and medical mart would be constructed in phases. A 400,000 square foot exhibition hall would feature walls of glass, opening up river and downtown views. The Medical Mart would occupy 100,000 square feet and be located near the Carter Road lift bridge. Perhaps the most striking difference in this latest plan is Forest City's proposal for a new office tower, located adjacent to the site that will serve as the company's new world headquarters. Plans call for a tower of thirty-five stories with a glass facade. "It's my firm belief that this will be a symbol of our willingness to invest in our headquarter city," Forest City Chief Executive Charles Ratner told Plain Dealer editors and reporters Tuesday. When asked about the company's current headquarters in the landmark Terminal Tower, Ratner stated "we've long considered that the Terminal Tower might be best suited for a residential conversion". He also emphasized that the Scranton Road site offers "extensive" opportunities for expansion as well as better "connectivity" than either the Mall site or the previously proposed site at Tower City's current parking facilities. An adjacent twin-towered hotel would be constructed east of the exhibition space. Renderings also show a pedestrian bridge, connecting the new facilities to Forest City's Tower City Center shopping mall. LaRue stated that architects have not been selected but that "with a project of this caliber, we'll be aiming high." Chris Kennedy, president of Chicago-based MMPI, said "considering the extensive effort Forest City has displayed with this latest proposal, it's only fair that we hear what they have to say". Mayor Frank Jackson was not available for comment.

^No. Rob is that ever-so-subtly lofted grenade that blows the absolute sh!t out of any sense of high-strung pretense that anyone could hope to have (aka he keeps us grounded and humble). And that's why we love him. :-)

Uh, YOU'RE the self-admitted Barneys-shopping label-ho rich b!tch around this joint - YOU cough it up, missy!
  6. That would be Royal Bank of Scotland (dba in the US as Citizens Bank).
  7. D'oh!!! I fixed it, thanks for the tip.
  8. ^I agree, but that's a *State* law requiring the barriers with the booze.
  9. My latest adventure was taking advantage of nice weather and heading over to Cleveland's Shaker Square neighborhood. From there, I also headed over to Larchmere, Fairmount Boulevard, Shaker Lakes and a few other places. My route (about 5.5 miles): Starting in the lobby of the Terminal Tower, on the way to catch the Rapid: Off we go - I took the Blue Line (light rail): Passing the RTA railyards at East 55th: The train passes through some blighted areas: Not everything is so bleak: But still... St. Elizabeth church, built by Hungarians who settled in the area - the new juvenile courts building under construction in the background: The former St. Luke's Hospital, awaiting restoration http://blog.cleveland.com/business/2008/09/buckeye_area_of_cleveland_bein.html And here we are at Shaker Square http://www.shakersquare.net/history/history-square.htm: The southwest quadrant is home to a movie theater and grocery store: Heading east on Shaker Boulevard, looking south on Van Aken - where the Blue Line heads southeast: Moreland Courts on the northern side of Shaker Boulevard: The Rapid station at Coventry Road and Shaker Boulevard: But let's head back west on Shaker, toward the Square: Moreland Courts - nope, no architectural character here ;-) Another trains passes through the Square: The northeast quadrant has a CVS, coffeshop and restaurants: Doorway to the corridor to the parking area: Looking north on North Moreland, with lots of historic apartment buildings: Some in good shape, others not so much: The AmTrust bank building is a landmark at Larchmere and North Moreland: Over to Larchmere, the electrical substation needs some TLC: Loganberry Books (one of Cleveland's best!) http://www.loganberrybooks.com/ and Strong Bindery Kick@ss signage for a car repair shop! More of the Larchmere commercial strip... With residential on the side streets: And nice infill on Larchmere itself: Cool building, and it's for sale: Enough of Larchmere, let's head to Shaker Lakes - these cluster homes are at Warwick and South Park Boulevard: Part of the "park" in South Park Boulevard: And the lovely homes along North Park Boulevard: But not all are lovely... But most are... and note, that's all ONE house in this pic: Over to historic Fairmount Boulevard - this 9,000 sq. ft. home made news when it went up for auction - check the pics at: http://homes.point2.com/US/Ohio/Cuyahoga-County/Cleveland-Heights/Fairmount-Coventry/1972602-Real-Estate.aspx Georgian grandeur on Fairmount Probably Fairmount's best known, the Tremaine-Gallagher house: Some smaller "shacks" on Fairmount ;-) Also up for sale - I think they're asking $569K But Fairmount doesn't have the monopoly on large homes - the next three are along South Park Boulevard: A brief stop at the Shaker Lakes Nature Center - by the way, this and some of the above homes were at one point going to be obliterated for a highway. http://www.shakersquare.net/news/pd-sept25-shakerlakes.htm But time to start wrapping things up - some lovely homes along Shaker Boulevard (yeah, public transit "ruins" neighborhoods  ) Shaker Towers http://www.shakertowers.com/ and Empire Plaza Passing by Moreland Courts again, I see UrbanOhio forumer, MyTwoSense  St. Elizabeth's, one more time: Downtown in the distance: And back out to Public Square - hope you enjoyed!
  10. This thread isn't about any other projects that FCE is dealing with - keep it to the Convention Center/Medical Mart.
  11. "the wires, trash cans, rusted cars, broken windows and abandoned factories in one shot, and follow it with well balanced, genteel residental pictures and skyline shots." That's what Cleveland is to me - a mixed bag (for better or worse).
  12. Arsenio Winston, once called 'crack dealing piece of trash,' gets 11 years in prison Posted by Donna J. Miller/Plain Dealer Reporter March 26, 2009 17:11PM CLEVELAND --- A man once called a "crack dealing piece of trash" by Councilman Mike Polensek is going to prison for 11 years for three armed robberies. Arsenio Winston, 20, accepted a plea deal and agreed to testify against his co-defendant, Marshall Butts. Butts, also 20, took a plea deal as his trial was about to begin and was sentenced to nine years in prison. Click for a PDF of the letter in question: http://blog.cleveland.com/pdextra/2007/07/letter.pdf More at cleveland.com http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2009/03/arsenio_winston.html ...... Well Mom, looks like your childrearing was ineffective and inappropriate.
  13. I have to give kudos to Swensons. I used to work near their Stow location but had never been there, when a co-worker/galpal said "ohhh, we HAVE to do lunch there!!!". I'm thinking okay, so she's a fan of the food - silly me. Lo and behold, it's a drive-in employing (at least when we were there) many an athletic and handsome shorts-wearing collegiate from nearby Kent State. Seeing their prowess as they bounded across the parking lot like gazelle was one thing, however, when they lean into your car window and follow up your sandwich order with the question "would you like butter on your buns"?!? As MTS would say "oh lawd have mercy!!!"

I *think* you might mean Detroit Road - Hilliard is further south and mostly 50's style suburbia (aka not much in walking distance). The Kensington Club apartments are south of Lake, literally a one minute walk from Lake Road Market.

I *wish* I didn't have to do anything, but I have not one, but THREE "cowlicks" - one on the front and two on the back of my head. Since my hair is finely textured, it ends up standing up in chunks  Cutting it really short makes it even worse. When that whole "bedhead" trend came around a few years back, I was so p!ssed - I mean, guys with perfectly good hair that naturally lays flat were paying to style theirs like mine (sans product) :x
  16. Hagan's arrogant tone isn't helping the matter - I'm not sure why he feels like everything he does is beyond reproach.

YOU live my life, growing up near Youngstown and living IN Cleveland and try to be a complete pacifist - as IF?!? DJ Orion, I have no clue as to what could help you - whatever the case, quit b!tching about having thick hair with texture!

I'm thinking only MTS will get this - but I have not one, but several VHS tapes of 'CNN's Style with Elsa Klensch' introducing the swimwear trends of the early 90s courtesy of Gottex ;-)

Wait, a hair product budget?? Farmer Shawn? What?? B!tch, I will SO shank you in the kidney - got a preference, left or right?!?

"The only problem is it's pretty hard to find. You generally have to find a salon that sells it, or find it somehow online." Pfft, hard to find... :-) according to their site, d:fi products are sold at Charles Scott in Westlake, Allure in Solon, and Ulta in Westgate in Fairview Park. I say if you have to drive more than an hour to get it, *that* qualifies as hard to find.
  21. ^Considering how many restauranteurs on cleveland.com are lamenting this, I'd agree this is the best thread to post this. Sad news indeed :-(

^Believe me, after my severance runs out, I'm going to consider cutting back (*gasp**shudder*gasp*) on my hair product budget. If you're just doing the front brushup, you might also try the Matrix form putty (fyi, I've bought both this and the American Crew Forming Cream at Trade Secret stores for about $10 each): And I repeat to you heteros secretly scoping out this thread for tips - cough up some cash for the UrbanOhio fund drive!

As MTS said, keep in mind that it all depends on your hair type/texture. I only offer the following as someone with poker straight/fine hair: For a paste/pomade, I swear by American Crew's Forming Cream: A little goes a long way - I mean, less than the size of a pea and I'm good to go. I bought this in December and still have about half the container left and for about $10 for the container, that's d@mn good. It's not as superglue-strong as others but in my opinion that's a good thing. For a mousse/gel product, it's Aveda's Custom Control Gel - it has mica chips in it, which is great if your hair looks better with the "wet look" (mine does): The drawback is that it costs almost $20 and I go through a container every two months - if anyone can suggest a less expensive alternative, I'm all ears! Oh, and for any heteros lurking on this thread and stealing our advice - feel free to offer a donation to the UrbanOhio fund! ;-)
  24. Normally I prune threads figuring people should know better, but the folks having the cellphone discussion offered helpful info - that said, if everyone got what they needed, let me know so I can keep things tidy. :-)
