  1. What I find sad and yet hysterical at the same time are FCE's attempts to show the "urban impact" that the Mall site would have. It's like they took the Powerpoint slides from MMPI, handed them to one of the interns who knows Sketchup and said "add some ugly bunkers and make the Mall look bad!!!". Because of COURSE this would be approved! Then, they show us the glorious "urban impact" that their proposal would have... brace yourselves, folks: If this is supposed to wow us, it's working - I'm rather wowed by the desperation I'm seeing

You should seriously consider contacting clevelandmemory.org with these images - they're absolutely amazing and I've never EVER seen them before. The L.N. Gross building is at the southwest corner of West Third and Lakeside. This is at the intersection of Cedar-Fairmount - standing on Cedar, looking north. The Alcazar is still there, as is the Best & Co. building (houses Jillians and a few other businesses): This building is still there (vacant I believe) at Broadway and Harvard. According to the planning department's listings it was demolished but in Live.com's aerial map, it's very visible? It was the first of a chain of J.L. Goodman furniture stores. The building adjacent with the pediment isn't there but was replaced with another commercial building: I'm guessing this was Goodman's second store on Pearl Road in Parma Heights - definitely demolished:

Caffeine is a prime ingredient of most diet pills because it works as an appetite suppressant (and is also why a lot of diet pills aren't good for people with heart conditions).
  4. I can't say I've heard too many good things about general temp agencies, however I can't speak highly enough of the agency I'm listed with - Aquent. Most agencies have no idea what to do with someone with my skillset; Aquent specializes in placing designers and other creative types, run their talent pool through tests, etc. They came through for me back in 2001 when I was laid off, and hopefully they'll be able to do so again.
  5. Just caught this - "If the job requires"? You have to *get* that job first and if the long hair (or whatever anyone might be sporting (not just you C-Dawg) - facial hair, eyebrow/nose ring, etc.) is going to make any potential employer hesitant to hire you in the first place, get rid of it. I was wearing a soul patch for a few months but its gone now. Not saying this supercedes the effects of seeking work in a bad economy, but you have to think of it this way - potential employers will see long hair, and then they'll see dozens of equally qualified people who are more of a match for their corporate culture from the get-go, and they won't even have to have the "cut your hair, son" discussion.
  6. I was referring to the fact that although I wasn't of an age to be looking for a job back in 1980-1983, I most certainly felt the effects of that recession. Unless one went through a previous recession at the worst possible time in one's career, I'd reckon there isn't much familiarity. And this is no ordinary recession. This one is hitting at a time when education costs have never been higher and wages/CoL has never been lower... not since the 30s, anyway. Also, never in US history has the entry level market been so soft. Advances in transportation, communication and automation have made humans obsolete to an unprecedented extent. These are issues we must face, preferably as an entire nation, and step one is admitting they exist. You do know who you are replying to, right? By that I mean, he has first hand experience with the current recession. And with the early 80s recession - sure, I was too young to be looking for a job but I sure as sh!t helped my dad on various odd jobs. Roofing the neighbors' houses, picking apples at an orchard, you name it. That still didn't change the fact that the only cheese in our house came in 5-lb. bricks marked U.S. Government. Whatever the case, we managed - in an area that was probably one of the hardest hit back then.
  7. "But we're facing challenges you should be thankful you have no first hand knowledge of." Riiiiight.
  8. Many of those who lived long enough to be liberated from the camps were placed immediately in German prisons because homosexuality was criminalized in Germany at the time. Thanks for the photos, Glenville - very powerful.
  9. I don't see a huge need for this - there's already the 30-minute free parking row in the garage.
  10. ^I've been doing a lot more shopping at the West Side Market; granted you have to take time to learn what vendors are best (especially in produce) but: 1. Herbs at Basketeria and A&J (next to Basketeria) are $1.00 for a small container vs. $2 and up at Daves (and even higher at places like Giant Eagle) 2. Cheeses at the Mediterranean Imported foods store - they're cheaper, better quality, and I can order a quarter pound of whatever/however instead of buying a larger size somewhere else and grating it myself. 3. Same thing with cuts of meat - and the vendors are usually happy to tell you ideas of how to prepare the food. 4. A small container of deelish Pad Thai from Kim Se is enough for a meal and costs only $2 (some dishes are too complicated to put together at home). And fwiw, I've printed out coupons from coupons.com and Target in Steelyard Commons accepted them.
  11. "Every single person that has found out I do this makes fun of me." You have my full blessing to tell those compassionless b@stards to go f#ck themselves. :-) In addition to having my resume put in all the right peoples' hands, I'm drumming up quite a bit of freelance work.

I've found that *good* friends are surprisingly understanding of my situation. I think the book, along with a personalized note that ties into your friendship would be just fine.
  13. I've been to a few and I'm still biased toward the Steel Trolley Diner in Lisbon (about 1.5 hours southeast of Cleveland): http://www.steeltrolleydiner.com/ Awesome shakes (served old-school style with the metal mixing tumbler) and huge burgers at a decent price.

Great photos but you've got to be f#cking kidding me - FirstMerit added their sign to the First National Tower?!? Tacky tacky tacky!!!!

As some of you may or may not know, on February 27th I joined the ranks of the walking wounded - thanks to the economy. The resume-sending and networking is a given, but I know it's essential for me to do things that I enjoy in the interim. Just a collection of pics over the past few weeks - enjoy:

"What he, and the majority of people see is that a)there is a serious dearth in retail in downtown Cleveland, and B) the signage used in the city is cheap looking. Instead of saying "shut up you don't know what you're talking about", why don't you guys foster a healthy conversation that is meaningful. Would that really hurt?" The dearth of retail? Explained in painful detail ad nauseum - but we should entertain the idea of suing retailers into locating downtown? Cheap looking signage? Again... where's a productive conversation going to come from when someone 1. completely disregards reality and those who actually know and share the details of why things are the way they are and 2. won't put a sock in it and say "I guess that answers that". What part of the Admins and Mods 1. have lives to live and 2. don't get paid a cent to babysit threads DON'T you understand?!?

Outstanding job as always! You're right about the eastern spots but here are a few that have worked for me, some are the obvious places: Garfield Monument balcony Parking garages at University Hospitals New lounge on the top floor of the Clinic's Heart and Vascular building Parking garage at Cleveland Clinic (East 93rd and Euclid) Top floor of Rhodes Tower, CSU The area near St. Lukes Pointe (former St. Lukes Hospital) And occasionally the Goodtime III will head east of downtown but not always I'm waiting for the weather to break and I'll be out taking photos again. Thanks to some unfortunate circumstances, I may have quite a bit of free time on my hands. :-|
  18. Again, all I'm hearing are buzzwords and quotes from a boosterish presentation - not specific answers to specific questions. We're not the unwashed masses or Nell from the country, we can handle a detailed and thoughtful response.
  19. ^All well and good but let's keep this about the Convention Center/Med Mart - not the skyline :-)
  20. "Public dollars should be used to leverage private investment." Ironic that Cleveland Browns Stadium (possibly one of the worst places for that kind of facility) is the closest landmark to this line in your post ;-) No offense but your reply is great for PR/boosterism for the Flats East Bank, but it doesn't really address any of the posts that question your assertions. That's not a very persuasive approach, imho.
  21. "The concern about the Mall or FEC site is the lack of available adjacent land for development for Hotels (or any other private investment for that matter)" Available and scraped clean land? Okay, I can see that - but available sites for hotel development? There's the Lincoln Building on the southeast corner of St. Clair and East 6th (along with a parking lot just south of the building) - back in the day there was a proposal for a large hotel there (renderings from Fleischman & Partners): Then there's the Rockwell Building (former NBC building) which recently was proposed for a renovation into a Staybridge Suites. As for the Tower City site, there's plenty of adjacent sites - the "Courthouse Plaza" site (just west of the Federal Court House), the parking lots along the river, the air rights above the garage entrance off Superior (between Prospect and Superior) as well as the "Lebron Wall" site on the southwestern corner of Landmark Office Towers. Now - are all those sites viable/desirable? Maybe, maybe not but it's not completely accurate to say there's NO adjacent land for development in either proposal.
  22. ^Thank you. The "oh really, no - we're NOT trying to sensationalize" comment is nothing but backpedaling horsesh!t. God they're grasping at straws, aren't they?

Congrats, and thanks for the article :-)
  24. Welcome to the forum - though I think the "experts" need a spellchecker ;-)
