  1. The Hi and Dry had alright food but atrocious service. I'm a fan of the Southside, both for food *and* service.

I think the exodus of retail from the downtown area to the western end (along Rte. 62/State Street) did more damage.
  3. "I'll get mauled by my cohorts on here for suggesting this," Not necessarily, Highland Square is a great urban neighborhood - it might be a bit on the small side for someone coming from Chicago, though.
  4. ^At least you realized it and several places you mention fit the description - I just wish *everyone* would THOROUGHLY read these relocation posts before throwing out their favored location. They're lovely and all but the OP specifically said a commute of 30 minutes or less to MEDINA. That means EASY access to I-71 at the very least.
  5. ^I agree with both redbrick and blinker12 - all three are great areas with their own character and pros/cons. The commute from some parts of northwestern Lakewood might be a little north of 30 minutes. Pricewise I think you may experience reverse sticker shock, and whatever you do, if you really realllly like a place - don't be afraid to negotiate a lower price. Just out of curiosity, what kind of arrangements are you hoping for as far as schools?

^Hardly, my family has a running joke about my mom ordering a fish sandwich in the old Cleveland aquarium's cafeteria - she was in plain sight of the giant grouper that was front and center by the entrance. The poor thing just kept *staring* at her... Anyway, I have to agree that certain components of this project have promise - I'd love to see a restaurant/public space that offers a deck/boardwalk/waterfront view the way Shooters is able to have in the Flats.
  7. Something tells me this is just a start for both shopping centers :-| From cleveland.com Z Gallerie closing stores in Legacy Village and Crocker Park Posted by jcho February 20, 2009 11:48AM Z Gallerie Inc., a Gardena, Calif.-based home decor retailer, is pulling out of Ohio and closing its stores at Crocker Park and Legacy Village as part of national effort to pare down a third of its 75 retail outlets. 9. From cleveland.com: Marketing, communications industry employs more than 39,000 in Northeast Ohio, analysis shows Posted by kkroll February 19, 2009 17:01PM Dick Clough, who runs a one-man advertising, marketing and publishing firm in Lakewood, always knew the Northeast Ohio communications industry was larger and more influential than most people realize. He just didn't have any way to quantify it. Until now. More at cleveland.com http://blog.cleveland.com/business/2009/02/marketing_communications_indus.html

"I'm starting to wonder if they don't want people with college degrees." They want people who they know will be reliable for the long-term - they see degreed types as people who will bolt as soon as an opportunity arises.
  11. Congrats folks - this thread is locked. Maybe *you* have enough time in your lives to take threads off-topic ad nauseum, but we don't have time to have to constantly babysit.
  12. "People adapt slowly to new technology." People have yet to adapt to the millions of dollars of signage, rumble strips, lighting, etc. on Deadman's Curve; people have yet to adapt to simple traffic signals for god's sake - how much handholding do people need before we finally declare that evolution hasn't stopped? If people can't adapt and freak the f#ck out because of something so simple, my guess is that the gene pool needs some bleach!
  13. Though I did get a chuckle out of the Seinfeld references, it's time to get back on topic folks :-)

Youngstown/Warren is a split between Cleveland and Pittsburgh - the further northwest of Ytown/Warren you go, the more influence there is of Cleveland; conversely the further southeast you go, there's more Pittsburgh influence.

For those whose reality-based posts were deleted, I apologize but apparently some people have a hard time reading "back on topic":
  16. I would hope that the homeowners decide to make use of the trellises and add some greenery.
  17. It's an absurd suggestion, but in this economy and this real estate market, can you really blame them?
  18. Sorry to take the thread off-topic again, but most likely there will be an increase - a lot of residential projects have come online (rental and for-sale) and there are more that should be finished by then.

^I get ticked when people say they're going to a "wake" when they mean 'calling hours'. Sorry, but if drinks aren't available and everyone's standing around quietly - it ain't a d@mn wake!
  20. "Many authoritative voices on the Cleveland end of UO seem convinced we have to exponentially boost the downtown population before we can get even basic retail there." With all due respect, several of those authoritative voices ARE in the position of speaking directly with the site selection folks of many of these national retailers. They've sat at the negotiating table on more than one occasion to plead the case for retailers to locate in downtown Cleveland. When they relay their experience on the forum, maybe you should actually consider that they know what they're talking about instead of discounting facts presented by those in the know. Others may not be in similar positions but we either know or are friends with the people that are trying to make those things happen. I'm not sure what else we can tell you to get you to understand the point. I haven't even touched on the current state of retail in a recession... or the fact that Cincinnati has more higher-income neighborhoods within the city than Cleveland, etc. Obviously, we'd ALL love to see better retail in downtown Cleveland but keep in mind that downtown has a 10K population *without* a strong retail scene. Fyi, Payless sells socks - probably not your first choice but you're not being accurate.
  21. Not only that, but the Arcade lacks the foot traffic of a retail space on Euclid or in Tower City. Back when they moved from the Arcade to Tower City, I spoke to the folks at the Cleveland Store - they said they did in one day what they used to do in almost a week at their Arcade space. The food court area beneath/behind the Euclid side staircase is too hidden, imho. There are a few spots open and doing well (seemingly) - the Greek Express and Charlies Steakery almost always have long lines at lunch, and there are some smaller service-oriented spots like the chiropractor, spa/salon, etc. That said, there are some glaring vacancies - especially on the lowest level.
  22. Fair enough, the shill comment was a bit harsh but read my post again - BOTH the Clinic *and* UH (and plenty of other institutions in Cleveland) should be in a position of leadership when it comes to promoting healthy and sustainable development rather than perpetuating and exacerbating auto-centric ex-urban sprawl. The kind of development they're both promoting (outside of their main campuses) is anything but "green".

Your best bet would be to check with the Strong Bindery, located in Loganberry Books on Larchmere (near Shaker Square). I'd recommend calling ahead - they'd likely want to see it before giving you any kind of quote. http://www.loganberrybooks.com/
  24. palijandro7, are you a paid shill for the Clinic or only a well-meaning apologist?
