  1. I felt this article deserved mentioning, and since there's not much in the way of an overall Ohio "education" thread, I thought I'd start with this article about my hometown. You know who I hope sees this? Those who perpetually lament that higher education isn't valued in areas with strong manufacturing histories: From cleveland.com: Tiny Salem, Ohio, has big college scholarship program Posted by JKroll November 30, 2008 21:44PM Cities across the country are scrambling to find ways to help students pay for a college education. The Promise program, launched in Kalamazoo, Mich., three years ago, and others modeled after it offer a guaranteed grant to graduates of the public schools. Akron's mayor pushed for a similar effort but failed to convince voters this month that the municipal sewer system should be leased to pay for it. Meanwhile, the people of Salem, Ohio -- a city of about 12,000 halfway between Cleveland and Pittsburgh -- have done it their own way for the past 100 years. That's how long the Salem High School Alumni Association has given college scholarships to graduating seniors. A lot of scholarships. More at cleveland.com http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2008/11/tiny_salem_ohio_has_big_colleg.html ................. Even as someone who has less than fond memories of their high school years in Salem, I'm looking into developing an art/design scholarship as part of the annual alumni scholarships.
  2. Yes, that would be cycle 4 - Tiffany was doing pretty well to that point but then went limp with the whole "I'm from the hood, I'll never be anything but hood, blah blah blah fear-of-improving-my-lot-in-life crap". So Tyra called Tiffany out on it, and with a lot of creative editing, one of the most infamous scenes in ANTM was created.
  3. Aside from my site and UrbanOhio? I don't have "geeky" hobbies as much as "really REALLY gay" interests - Top Model? Yeah - name the contestant and I can tell you how she could have won or whose runway walk was better that season. 90s dance pop? Yeah, sing the wrong lyrics to a Cathy Dennis song and you're getting called on it.
  4. "If it's not against the rules on this forum, can anyone recommend any reputable realtors for the Portage/Geauga/Summit/Cuyahoga County area?" A specific request like yours (asking for realtor recommendations) is not against the rules; nor is a realtor asking if they can help as long as there is a specific request like yours. :-) In this case, I believe the forumer "carolecohen" can help you.
  5. Yep, you're absolutely right - looks like they got that cluster mixed up.
  6. The only error I noticed is that they have North Point Tower and Tower at Erieview switched.
  7. "I never suggested the gripe wasn't legitimate. I was merely responding to the implication that the scheduled time was in some way wrong. Keep in mind, any intersection of two roads could have as many as 8 points that might be described using the same street name pair (are you traveling north, south, east, or west, and is your stop before or after the intersection?)." Except in this case, there's only one actual bus shelter (the right arrow points right at it) in this vicinity, and that's ALWAYS been used for the northbound "West 14th/Clark" stop. Riders have been accustomed to that shelter being the location for the northbound scheduled times. Across the street (treelawn by Gas City) has ALWAYS been the southbound "West 14th/Clark" stop, and that's what RTA has established for riders for decades to use as their point of reference. Why on god's green earth would anyone with a modicum of common sense say "well, we've built a shelter and it's been THE location that riders have learned to schedule their lives around for decades - but f#ck it, let's just arbitrarily say 'oh, silly riders - we meant the other side of the street about a block down where that little sign is, and oh the bus is just looping through Steelyard and depending on rush hour traffic, the time listed might be off by ohhh, 15-20 minutes''?!? WTF were they thinking?!? But what do I know - technically, the schedule is "right".

I'll give you a topic - the chickpea. It is neither a chick, nor a pea. Discuss.
  9. The closest in Cleveland would be Loganberry over in the Larchmere neighborhood. It's not a maze like the Book Loft, though. http://www.loganberrybooks.com/about.html
  10. "If they list one time for 14th and Clark it should be the most obvious one. not the one no one can see and the bus never stopped at before this change. 14th and Clark should be listed after steel yards not before." Absolutely - the West 14th/Clark LISTED stop has ALWAYS been the ones I've marked below. And since when does "well the bus goes THROUGH the intersection at that time" qualify as the scheduled stop?!? The loop through and back from Steelyard is about 3 miles - part of that loop is the Jennings Freeway DURING RUSH HOUR. Yeah, I think this is a case where people have a legitimate gripe.

With Thanksgiving coming soon, how can anyone even THINK about fried ice cream?!?
  12. Didn't Robert Madison design those? Has he ever sat in them for 30 minutes on a day like today?
  13. Happy holidays, knuckleheads - the next person to take this thread off-topic gets a week off.

    MOMO? :wtf:
  15. "Anyone riding the 81 hoping to make a train connection downtown is now out......and the time it gives you for 14th and Clark is NOT the time it picks you up at the bus shelter at 14th and Clark, now it is the time it turns right instead and heads into SteelYard. The Time it actually picks up at the bus shelter at that intersection is 10? 12? 15? minutes later than the time stated." I'm in the same neighborhood and an occasional user of the 81 and I wondered how the Steelyard service would affect the timing... however (Granted it's just one observation on one day), but according to the schedule there's a pickup at the West 14th/Clark bus shelter at 9:09am - at 9:05am this morning, I saw a 81 heading northbound on West 14th near Buhrer, which would put them there on-time.
  16. Folks, please provide a link/source whenever you post things like this. Thanks.
  17. "If one is going for decoration, why would one use blank grey/beige surfaces that resemble cardboard or styrofoam? Brick and stone have much more textural richness. Thi$ i$ true, but I'm $ure there'$ a good rea$on they're not opting for brick or $tone.

My phone is five years old, and I'm on a $29.99 a month legacy plan - so I'm only able to receive texts, not send them which is fine by me. The only times I've found texting to be more convenient than calling is if you're in a loud, crowded place and you need to regroup with friends and can't hear them on the phone. Oh, just a recommendation for the heavy-ADD-texters out there - if you're new to a city and you're at a social event where you're hoping to meet new people, put the f#cking blackberry down - especially when someone is introducing you to the single and available person you were admiring five minutes prior.

"But maybe if people realized, there others around them, crowd movement would be a lot more efficient." Am I the only person who (in situations similar to what Hayward described) has ever said something along the lines of: "Hi Oblivia - I'm just another person in the world but you might like to know you're holding up about ten others from getting on with their lives or home to their loved ones. Thankssomuch.". Now normally those might be fighting words but when Oblivia looks behind me and sees the other people (:x :-P :x :x :x :-P :x :x :whip: :x :x) - she's always hurried up and got the hell out of the way.
  20. ^^How is that P90x workout as far as impact on joints, etc.? I don't have a structured workout routine; if that works for others great, but I think it's too much hassle to carry around a little notebook checking off what I did, how much I lifted, etc. And I definitely don't care how much I can lift - I do enough to get a good workout, not impress people that "yo, I can bench ____". If I had to take my workouts THAT seriously, I'd stop enjoying them. I won't lie - I mainly go for vanity's sake; the health benefits and stress relief are a nice added bonus, though. Anyway, I go to the gym 3x weekly. Each day involves lifting (switching it up with machines and freeweights between the bicep/back, tricep/chest setups), abwork, and always always always 30+ minutes on the elliptical (usually keeping the rpm at 200 or above).

No Rob, you have earned every part of your corncob tiara ;-) One thing I've become more conscious of are the gifts I buy for my partner's young relatives (great-nieces, etc.) - walking through the toy aisle at Target, I was appalled at how expensive and "structured" toys have become. $20 for some chintzy plug-in component of "Dora's World" or whatever the h#ll they're trying to pass off as "interactive fun". $20 for an "outfit" so they can dress a Bratz doll like some streetwalker?!? I don't think so! I ended up getting a lot of good stuff at the art museum's gift shop - things that actually require THEM to think, or things they can create and personalize. They absolutely loved it :-)
  22. Here's their project list - note they were heavily involved in the (critically acclaimed by some) Pittsburgh convention center: http://www.cwisdom.com/files/projectsdomestic.html They have Cleveland's listed as consulting for just the feasability and master-planning, not the concept plan.
  23. From cleveland.com Cuyahoga commissioners hire consultant to hurry medical mart deal along Posted by Joe Guillen November 21, 2008 15:25PM Categories: Medical, Medical Mart, Real Time News CLEVELAND -- Under mounting pressure to finalize the medical mart deal, Cuyahoga County has hired another consultant to help reach an agreement to build the $400 million downtown complex, which also will include a new convention center. County Administrator James McCafferty said the county hopes to announce by Jan. 15 a site and a binding deal with a private Chicago firm to build the development many are banking on to revitalize the region's economy.
