Cleveland: Demolition Watch
Sorry, just call me the Linda Evangelista of UrbanOhio - I don't get out of bed to take photos of anything less than a 10,000 sq. ft. building being demolished ;-)

Cleveland: Local Media News & Discussion
From wkyc.com: http://www.wkyc.com/news/local/news_article.aspx?storyid=100746&catid=45 CLEVELAND -- The Plain Dealer will cut more jobs by the end of the year because of the struggling economy. Ohio's largest newspaper reported today that it has increased cuts from 38 to 50 employees, or 21 percent of its unionized newsroom jobs. The paper earlier offered employee buyouts. The Plain Dealer will begin layoffs if 50 employees do not volunteer to leave. The Plain Dealer announced the cuts Oct. 7, citing poor advertising revenue and a struggling newspaper industry. There are 299 employees in the newsroom, and 238 of them represented by the Northeast Ohio Newspaper Guild. The jobs to be eliminated include reporters, copy editors, photographers, artists and page designers. The Plain Dealer is owned by Advance Publications Inc. and has a daily circulation of about 345,000.

I'm curious if Stark's HQ will remain downtown - if I remember correctly, they moved 40some people to downtown from Woodmere.

Cleveland: General Business & Economic News
Generally not - from what I gather, the little banks are acquired by the regionals - then the regionals get acquired by the megabanks.

Something along these lines, perhaps? ;-)

Cleveland: General Business & Economic News
Noticed this tidbit on cnn.com yesterday http://money.cnn.com/2008/11/10/markets/markets_newyork/index.htm "Citigroup (C, Fortune 500) is reportedly in talks to buy an unnamed regional bank, in the aftermath of its failure to buy Wachovia (WB, Fortune 500) last month, according to The Wall Street Journal." Given current events, nothing surprises me any more:

Cleveland: HealthLine / Euclid Corridor
^The personal insults aren't necessary, jpop. I do have to agree with TBideon - I understand that there are certain things that can't be disclosed and specifics regarding a potential fix may not even be planned yet, but I think we're allowed to be miffed about this.

Cleveland: Local Media News & Discussion
"When we stop talking about this city's troubles as our troubles, that's when we've given up." There's talking about things productively, and then there's the incessant Chicken Little handwringing that's been Morris' (and far too many of the Cleveland media) M.O. for how long - and what does that accomplish? Many of the problems Morris points out aren't isolated to Cleveland but you'd never know that from his article. Sorry, I've been doing the whole "make my block/neighborhood/city better" thing for quite some time and I don't need some half-@ssed backhanded "call to action" column to do it. As far as "you will feel the loss, because I know you care about this city" - well, with all due respect - duh. :wtf: Even people who couldn't give a sh!t will feel the loss.

Cleveland: Local Media News & Discussion
"In recent weeks, we've lost National City Bank and will soon likely lose Eaton Corporation." I just wish that the self-flagellators would stop lumping the rest of Cleveland with them. *I* didn't run National City into the ground, nor did I (aside from my tax dollars being used as bailout funds) sell them to PNC. *I* had nothing to do with Eaton's ridiculous demands for their proposed HQ campus in the Flats, nor did I have any say-so into them relocating to Chagrin Highlands. He's another bubblehead who looks around, cherrypicks a few examples and chucks out a token column every other week. But what do I know... I'm sure he's helping boost PD subscriptions by leaps and bounds

CLEVELAND - Take a trip on the Healthline (new BRT route)
^I didn't pay too much attention to the route infrastructure but I don't think it would be too drastic to convert the Healthline into a streetcar route at some point.

Akron Neighborhoods (North Hill, Highland Sq., Middlebury, Goodyear Hts.)
No, it WAS the largest building without interior supports at one time. Also, it doesn't rain inside - when the humidity is high, condensation forms on the upper part of the interior - if there's enough, the condensation drips.

Cleveland Museum of Art: Exhibits, News, & Info
My partner and I went to the "Artistic Luxury" exhibit at CMA today, and I have to recommend it without reservation. The admission price is a little higher than most of the paid exhibits ($17 vs. $7), but considering they have pieces from Fabergé, Lalique, Tiffany, etc. and some on loan from folks like Queen Elizabeth II and His Serene Highness Prince Albert of Monaco - I imagine their insurance costs were a little higher. I decided to buy a one-year membership which included two free tickets to this exhibit so if we return for one more paid exhibit this year (since we get two free tickets for my individual membership, we will), the membership has paid for itself. Anyway, it was a *perfect* colorful escape from the cold grey weather we've had lately. As someone who majored in jewelry/metalsmithing in my undergrad, I could have spent all day there. Anyone with a nominal appreciation for art deco, art nouveau and fine jewelry would enjoy this show. Some of the pieces were the best of the best - I mean, everyone knows that Tiffany made lamps with dragonfly and butterfly motifs but how about one inspired by a spider (which absolutely f'in ROCKED)? The size of some of the stones were especially amazing and the use of some stones in ways you wouldn't imagine - lots of breathtaking pieces to be seen. Images from the Cleveland Museum of Art site: Nickel-sized yellow diamond there, folks: The detailing on the "easel" was amazing - each red "letter" flipped up to reveal a portrait (and this is about life-size):

CLEVELAND - Take a trip on the Healthline (new BRT route)
Alrighty, I decided to try out the new-fangled BRT line - the new RTA Healthline. I didn't go the whole route, but it's a huge improvement over the cramped, sluggish traditional bus route that it replaced. There were a few hiccups as far as timing (buses would bunch up) and the priority signaling but overall it's a great way to get between downtown and University Circle. I apologize in advance for some glare and reflections but I couldn't ask the driver to shut off all the lights ;-) Here are some of the sights along the way: A nice view while I wait at the Public Square station: The Park Building, undergoing rehab and conversion into condos: Alright, off we go! At East 9th, a quick peek of the detailing on the Cleveland Trust Rotunda: The Hanna Building and USBank Center: The soon-to-be-a-lot-emptier Jewish Community Federation (a building designed by Edward Durrell Stone) at East 18th: Details of Trinity Cathedral at East 22nd: The recently refurbished belltower of St. Paul Shrine at East 40th: The venerable Cleveland Agora concert venue, near East 55th: Detailing on the Agora facade: The Baker Motors Building undergoing renovation at East 71st with the requisite union protestors: The belltower of St. Agnes Church - all that remains of the church: The Taussig Cancer Center at the Cleveland Clinic - designed by Pelli and Associates: Alright, time to walk around - the Ireland Cancer Center construction site at Euclid and Cornell Road: One more piece of structural steel for the construction: Never mind this pedestrian crap, time to get "air time": Steady... Since there aren't too many cranes in the air around Cleveland, another pic will have to do: CWRU's Village 115 in the foreground, the Bratenahl highrises in the background: No, not cowbell - more SKYLINE! Slab-o-riffic! The art museum is looking great, even while under renovation: Looking back over at University Hospitals: Lots of sharp lines here: Lots of curves over there: Double dutch colonial? Village 115, all LEED-certified, all the time! Cleveland Institute of Art - nice re-use you got there: Cleveland Hearing and Speech Center, showing how you can build up the sidewalk and improve the urban fabric: Brought to you by the fine folks at Zaremba! Alright, party's over - time to head back downtown: Oh what the heck, let's hop off and check out the "allee" at the Clinic. Oh, I'm happy to report there were no signs saying "Keep Off the Grass" - not that I would have obeyed them :-D And at the opposite end of the spectrum, we have this poor beast awaiting reinvestment near East 55th: The Willson tower over on Chester and East 55th: Brickwork detailing at the Cleveland Masonic Hall at East 36th: I believe it's the new education building at Cleveland State University: Tallest academic building (but certainly not the prettiest) in Ohio: I've got a GREAT... ;-) Alright time to depart at East 6th Street: And with that, I'll zoom zoom zoom my way outta here - hope you enjoyed!
