  1. "at one point it was the tallest building in the world... then it was the tallest building outside of new york city for years... and then the tallest building not in New York or Chicago until sometime in the 1970's." Nope. It was never the tallest in the world (Woolworth - 792 feet, 1910-1913) . It was the tallest outside of NYC from 1930 until Moscow State University's main tower unseated Terminal's global spot in 1953. Prudential Center in Boston unseated it nationally in 1967.
  2. cyclovert, thank you for clarifying some of your earlier post, and I repeat - I think it's great that you can see potential in this area, and more power to you for possibly "being the change" you want to see. However, the condescending remarks like "only in cleveland..." and "what does it take for clevelanders to take notice of this stuff?" didn't help your cause. There are plenty of areas around the country that are underutilized and haven't realized their TOD potential and it's disingenuous to single Cleveland out. As far as rehabbing the former industrial buildings, I suppose that relatively speaking - it wouldn't take much. But as 3231 pointed out, you have to have a developer who is willing to take such a risk. Easy enough - but that developer has to turn a profit, simple business 101 - and broke-ish 20somethings (emphasis on broke-ish) are great but are they a good market to target when you're wanting to turn a profit? You also have to have an ample and growing supply of those broke-ish 20somethings (and others who'd be interested). Not only that, those broke-ish 20somethings need to be okay with living in a high-crime area, surrounded by either blight, or vacant lots, with little existing retail or other neighborhood amenities. If this building was rehabbed, it would be an "island". The areas adjacent are either cemeteries or CMHA housing which isn't going anywhere. You can be aware of the neighborhood's history and social climate all you want, but do you have enough people who share your vision and aren't phased by the notion of being urban pioneers in a risky and low-profit market? It's not taboo to cast a critical eye (I'm getting sick of that sentiment - if there's anywhere people can cast a critical eye, it's on this forum) - but when you DO cast that critical eye, expect a response and don't brush it off as a blind retort. There's a difference between shooting down some idealism and pointing out relevant facts. So many times we've heard someone see a blighted area in Cleveland and basically say "silly Clevelanders, all you need is _____" - as if they're the first to ever notice or suggest ways to improve. No one's telling you this can't be done, but don't get taken aback when we provide reasons why it hasn't been done yet.
  3. Y'know, I *could* threaten to ban someone for "whispering" ;-)

^While I'm sorry it's not making your apartment hunting any easier, I think it's a very good problem for Cleveland to have. :-)
  5. " It would be a shame to see one of our cities most valued populations abandon the city symbolicly and possibly literaly in the future." It would seem that some of the trustees don't give a kak.
  6. ^Fair enough, but from now on let's limit them to quotes from the forum. :-)

I'm happy to report that (knock on wood) the little b@stard didn't like this stuff: http://www.critter-repellent.com/cart/catalog/Small_Critter_Products-6-1.html MTS, I think a lot of them find refuge in the wooded nooks and crannies in the neighborhoods. In Tremont, they recently ripped out a bunch of underbrush to clear a lot for some new townhomes - I'm guessing that's where Gus the Groundhog used to live.

^^http://www.christophergaxelrod.com/ He's done well for himself, doing what he does - event promotions, etc. However, I'm not sure which is tackier, the Siegfried and Roy statue (via Clvlndr in LV's link) or this "Cinemark/Tinseltown meets Wurlitzer Jukebox on the Lake".
  9. Am I really having to tell people TWO moderators to knock it off and get back on topic in THIS thread?!? :wtf:
  10. ^Unless it's Eddie Mae driving - she may be sweet on the exterior but something tells me she could open a can of whoop@ss on anything in her way!
  11. Most Saturday nights I'm usually at home with my partner watching a movie, but probably 2-3 times a month we'll go out (Friday or Saturday). Not really clubbing per se, but just a late bite to eat in some neighborhood joint in Tremont, Ohio City or downtown. "Oh, My! That brings back memories! The last time I got really sh!tfaced it was on those." Last time I got sh!tfaced on mixed drinks it was black russians - just like a white russian without that silly dilution with dairy products! :drunk:

  13. Yeah, I'd say you have a good reason to pitch a fit - this looks like shite:

Uhh, I graduated with someone named Todd Fowler - according to the YSU site about the penguin sculpture, he got his inspiration from watching his dad paint cars at the Lordstown GM plant. That's about it.

From the site: "Secondly, the RTA and Euclid Corridor Project will be completed soon. Tourists will be able to view the downtown area conveniently, as well as easily continue on to the University Circle area and points east. To aid in traffic flow and parking during events, as well as an added enticement for group tourism, and The Rockometer will provide themed shuttle service to area garages and parking lots." What's the point of shuttles when you have a parking lot right there?!?

Great shots Rob - makes me hope to get over that way before the weather gets too gruesome. God, how many nights did I pogo away in this place? The memories... :| I'm almost positive I graduated high school with this sculpture's artist: edit: 09/03/2010 by Robert Pence to fix broken img links
  19. "In other words, I didnt get the feeling that people were willing to do any more than post their displeasure on here....." When you regularly run into people on the street and have a chat with them, it's a bit redundant to bombard them with emails/letters, etc. And I'd really hate to see people clog up the thread with "okay, I sent my letter today!!!" posts.
  20. And I'm not suggesting the Opportunity Corridor is the best possible (or even a desirable) scenario for this area. I'm simply saying to our displaced friend who thinks it's just a matter of us local yokels not seeing potential in some cool old warehouses that require "literally no investment", that there's a little more to the story than a simple flip in an "up and coming" neighborhood.
  21. A-f#cking-men to Regina Brett's column regarding the "selection committee" for Tubbs-Jones successor. Secret committee can't pick Tubbs Jones' successor Secret committee undemocratic It shouldn't take a political analyst, a translator or a spy to understand the process of filling the congressional seat left empty by the death of Stephanie Tubbs Jones.
