    How pensive, your holiness.
  2. Cleveland & Beyond is now open as "The Cleveland Store" (because when customers were on the phone while shopping, they'd often say "oh, I'm at the Cleveland store...") - next to National City's Tower City Center branch. I'm hoping to have a book signing in time for Fathers Day; they also said that they're doing more sales before lunch then they used to do all day at the Arcade!
  3. ^I agree, it's a great place but considering how many attendees work downtown (as in downtown proper) it's not exactly practical.
  4. Just to clarify, I just stuck my camera inside the door of the Coast Guard station and snapped the pic. I was worried my flash would startle either birds or some C.H.U.D. but no worries. I can appreciate exploring urban ruins, but that was a bit too dilapidated for me. Thanks DJ Orion, I love it when there's a really euphoric song like that, and the weather yesterday was such a good match for it.
  5. So I get an invite to a friend's going-away picnic at Wendy Park at Whiskey Island. Lo and behold, I thought it was *today* but oops - it's tomorrow. My partner and I figured what the heck, let's stick around since it's so nice out. It's been a little chilly in Cleveland, but with temps in the mid-60s today (and this is a holiday weekend) and forecasts of 70s and sunshine for tomorrow, this song seemed appropriate for a soundtrack (if you don't like dance music, don't load it - mind you there's eye candy for every gender, but oh well): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nCvky5LAz_o Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church - epicenter of this weekend's Greek Festival in Tremont (fun time, but not our destination): Requisite skyline shot from Franklin: And since we didn't make the light at Detroit and West 25th, a quick shot of the bridge and downtown: Okay, onto the Shoreway we go and there's our exit! I have to admit the razorwire fencing makes this place feel a bit foreboding, but in a good way ;-) Why I like Wendy Park - you get nature, you get bridges, and you get skyline shots (sometimes all at once): The "iron curtain" bridge near the mouth of the Cuyahoga River: Great view of the skyline: The pathway to the abandoned Coast Guard Station is finally open: Bridges galore: There she is, in need of restoration: Lighthouse, the 5 mile crib (a water intake that's located 5 miles from the reservoir it supplies) and jet skiers: A sweet view of downtown: Bridges, bridges, and more bridges! The exterior of the Coast Guard Station - needs some work! Looovely! The view from the front door of the Coast Guard Station: Peeking between the buildings: Bridges, condos, people, boats... Who'da thunk you could see National City Center (albeit a clip) from here?!? Alright, even more bridges! The gap between 200 Public Square and the Terminal Tower will be filled by the new Ernst & Young building in the Flats East Bank project: Speaking of the Terminal Tower: Alright time to go - gotta hand it to Shooters - for a place in the Flats the food's alright, the atmosphere isn't exactly trendy, but they still bring in a steady business: And with that, the jackknife bridges salute you - happy holiday weekend everyone - get outside and enjoy the great weather!!!
  6. While I understand why you posted this (and yes, it's probably helpful to remind people to be safer drivers), I can't recommend telling the proprietor of the site (richNcincy) who also happens to be in law enforcement to "STFU".

^You could go to Vegas, never gamble a dime, never see a show and spend most of the time just sightseeing the botanical stuff. The hydrangeas alone at the Wynn were breathtaking.
  8. ^Hey now, moving beyond talk means "planning" ;-)
  9. I think that was a DeBartolo mall "thing" - Southern Park in Boardman had a fountain in the main concourse that was three stories tall.
  10. One of the itineraries I'm putting together is to take the Green Line to the South Park Boulevard stop, walk over to the nature center, then walk up to Fairmount, then south toward Larchmere and Shaker Square. Good way to kill a few hours, I'd say.
  11. ^And doing that backup in a separate thread about adaptive re-use for cinemas, thankyouverymuch. :-)
  12. ^When you say "old Ray's" - I was last there in 96ish - what have they done?
  13. Fair enough, as long as I can like Motorhead as well ;-) Anyway, getting back on topic I have to throw in Rays in Kent - nice all-around bar, great beer list and d@mn good burgers to boot. While it's not exactly divey or a neighborhood joint, I think the bar at Great Lakes Brewing is pretty snazzy.
  14. Oh I love GWAR! I know, I probably don't fit the image one might have of a GWAR fan, but it's true. :-)
  15. Kinda sorta fits here, since they'll be part of the cityscape for two years. New public art installation on Mall B: They already have a few fans: Image and info from clevelandpublicart.org: http://www.clevelandpublicart.org/mallb.asp Peter North and Alissa North of North Design Office were selected by a panel of art, design, and civic leaders to transform Mall B for the next two years. The selection panel was impressed the Norths' design because they innovatively linked Cleveland's industrial heritage with its goals for an environmentally sustainable future. The design interacts with the lakefront and connects to the wind turbine in a way that is visually engaging while encouraging viewers to reconsider how the cityscape is connected to the natural resources that shape it. In the words of the artists, the "strips of dynamic grasses celebrate the inseparability of Cleveland to the Cuyahoga River, and its waterfront location on Lake Erie. Alluding to moving water, and responding to wind and weather, the linear patterning of grasses recounts the cargo ships that line the river as the lifeblood of Cleveland.....The fabricated steel frames are derived from the city's renowned relationship to the steel industry. The forms are fluid and organic in nature to capture the sense of evolution toward green technologies." .............. Interesting, but I think I prefer the stylized urns by Brian Tolle:
  16. I should clarify - I was already on the trolley, hoping to hop off at West 9th/Lakeside. I'd hopped off at that spot in the past (apparently other riders had my idea), so I was surprised that he didn't stop until West 6th. Then I saw there wasn't an official stop there.
  17. And an update of the demo progress: Before: After: Before: ] After:
  18. "and you ask in advance, most operators will stop to discharge passengers just after making the turn from W 9 onto W Lakeside." Not an option when Willie's being just a bit too chatty with a passenger. :-)
  19. Believe me when I speak for plenty of Ohio City and Tremont residents who would happily go to a nice (operative word, NICE) cinema if it were downtown, instead of hauling arse to Valley View or Cracker Park.
  20. Jerry - is there any chance that a stop could be added on the B-Line? Specifically near West 9th and Lakeside - I took the trolley over to snap some pics of the Flats East Bank demolition, and it seemed silly that there's no stop from West 3rd, through the underpass, back up 9th and around to 6th. I don't mind walking a bit, but it was chilly out and it would have been nice to be let off closer than West 6th and Johnson Court (where the green arrow shows):
  21. "When I did my trip to Cincy two years ago I slept in my car at a rest area outside of town and showered at a truck stop. I can take anything. It's travel on the cheap." I'm never one to turn up my nose at a bargain, but even I'm way too much of a priss for that. Anyway, as 3231 said, the area around the Comfort Inn is perfectly fine, it's the hotel itself that I've heard less than pleasant things about - but if truck stop showering doesn't phase you, I'd imagine it'll work. That said, you'll also be visiting during the week and I'd imagine it would be quieter than on a weekend. Whatever you do, if you're looking to use transit to get around - stay downtown. Would you like some neighborhood itineraries? I can send PDFs so you can print them and have them to use as reference.
