  1. Since I can't offer a place to stay, I might suggest using Hotwire (I've used it and had great luck). I say this because there's a 2.5 star hotel in downtown listed for $52 per night, and by process of elimination I can almost guarantee that it's the Holiday Inn Express on Euclid. Perfect location at East 6th and Euclid and in a nicely restored historic bank building: It's also a few blocks from the Rapid station at Tower City Center. There's also a 2 star hotel listed for $43 per night, but I can guarantee that's the Comfort Inn near CSU which I've heard scary things about - I don't need the Ritz, but I get the feeling the Comfort Inn is a bit shady. I'll add more for your itinerary, but when you're calculating your costs, deduct the price of one lunch - my treat. :-)

"Cleveland remains the only Ohio city to have a rail line, and will be the first with BRT." Not just "a", but three - a heavy rail line (Red Line) and two light rail lines (Blue & Green). :-)
  3. Honestly I think the new projects (Stark/FEB) are better for snagging headlines and a handful of upscale residents - and changing perceptions. The residential conversions (i.e. Maron (East 4th), K&D (668 Euclid) and Mann (East 9th-12th) will be better for boosting actual resident numbers, and foot traffic.
  4. Welcome back, JMasek!
  5. Not the Rockefeller. I am sorry, I mean to the "left" of the glass building. It maybe part of or connected to the foreground glass building. It is part of the Pesht rendering. I ruined my own joke Oops, I see what you mean - I can see a resemblance (though it's not likely to have ANY resemblance when built).

Bah, just throw some padding on the steps before you head out - if you can't make it up on the return trip, just collapse on the steps!

A guy walks into a bar, his friend managed to duck in time.
  8. ^That's the Rockefeller Building in the background. This view is from West 3rd looking southwest (as though you were looking southwest from 55 Public Square).

I won't be able to attend any of these, but if someone can remember - please take photos! :-)
  10. "The server said he would check to see if they could do that because they don't normally do sides. I nearly walked out because when the server asked the owner/manager we overheard the owner/manager yelling at the server and saying "No, no, no, we're not going to start that sh!t!"" Just like when they were Snickers (old AND new locations) - I struggled to find something light-ish/healthy on the menu and often ordered an app as my entree. Let's see, locating in an area like Detroit-Shoreway - an area very popular with "my people" - and not allowing smaller side portions when swimsuit season is almost upon us? Thanks, I'll take my business to places that are happy to accomodate their clientele in an economy where people are eating out less.

Radeona, there's now a new separate thread for conversations about PC Helps and Tyler Village (aside from Tyler Village construction) :-) http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,16197.0.html

Don't forget that Cleveland is now included in Google Maps Streetview, with most of the area around Clifton-Edgewater covered. Not the same as seeing it in person, but you'll have a basic feel for the specific area. *EDIT* No idea if this is in your price range, but at $1500 a month, this home is in a gorgeous location on Edgewater Drive: http://www.realtor.com/rentals/search/listingdetail.aspx?zp=44102&ml=3&bd=3&typ=40&sid=cab6449a4a57497bb0527f247591deaa&lid=1098671387&lsn=5&srcnt=5#Photo

Just a heads-up, Clifton-Edgewater is overwhelmingly more skewed toward apartments than townhomes/single-families, but there are some options. Here are two decent-looking places (at least from the photos, I can't vouch) in the vicinity of Clifton/West 117th - note that if you live in Lakewood but live in Cleveland, you'll pay income tax in Cleveland as well as Lakewood. If you live in Cleveland proper, you only get "ding-ed" once. http://www.pluggedincleveland.com/rentals/view.cgi?num=5849 http://secure.adpay.com/clicknbuy.aspx?pid=4659637970636A466F5936537255675463504E7577773D3D&adid=CLE2085728 Also, the Clifton-Edgewater neighborhood is one of those areas where it might be easier to find something by driving around for a day.
  14. Take the casino discussions somewhere else, folks.
  15. Yep, this is a good fit for City Discussions. Carry on! :-)
  16. Oh for crying out loud... "Council wants to make sure the project does not hurt the IX Center and that city workers at the present convention center are protected." - must every bloody institution and organization be "protected" to get this sh!t moving? God forbid anything be done without making sure every squawking group is appeased! From wkyc.com: County commissioner proposes possible Medical Mart site http://www.wkyc.com/news/news_print.asp?id=89866 Marc Magill POSTED: Monday, May 19, 2008 10:03:39 PM UPDATED: Tuesday, May 20, 2008 10:12:15 AM CLEVELAND -- One county commissioner is proposing a new possible site for the Medical Mart. Tim Hagan fears rising construction costs may make the project price tag higher than the $400 million available. Now, a committee is going to check out the corner of East 55th Street and Chester Avenue. Council members got briefed on the deal and sites. Negotiator Fred Nance downplayed the buzz. The Forest City site behind Tower City looks to be a lock because they're offering a $1 a year lease on the Higbee Building. Council wants to make sure the project does not hurt the IX Center and that city workers at the present convention center are protected. A public hearing is scheduled Thursday between 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. to discuss sites. The hearing will be held at the Center for Families and Children at 4500 Euclid Avenue.

Hello to all the new people - perhaps we should organize a UrbanOhio happy hour if anyone would be interested?
  20. Alright, I pieced this together from the PDF on Stark's site: A nicely designed modern office tower with some interesting living components and retail re-working of Frankfort Avenue? Yes. Most stunning city block this side of Prague? Yeah, I dunno about that. :|
  21. No, just the one rendering. I agree pope, there's hyping up a property with a little hyperbole and then there's "soho of the midwest", or "world-class signage". Thanks for the update, dwirthwein and welcome to the forum!

If I ever doubt my career choice (graphic design aka we do as little as possible with Excel), all I have to do is check this thread. Good lord, my right-brained mind is about to explode reading all this formula stuff!!! :-o
  24. "And yes, some people with connections are going to get rich(er) from the port's relocation. Nothing happens in this country unless someone gets enriched by it. Shocking." But, but, but - if we accept that, Roldo will have nothing to write about!?!?!? And what will Kucinich grandstand about?!? :-o
  25. sunflower, it might be helpful to give us a little more perspective - what area are you moving from? It seems like we're better able to find a match when we know a little about where you're from. If there's a neighborhood/suburb that you prefer/like where you are now, that would help us steer you into something you'll likely be comfortable with.
