Cleveland: Downtown Cleveland Alliance News & Discussion
What a total f#cking crock of sh!t - wanna see a case where a labor union has become a self-serving leech on the city? Read on: Cleveland ordered to pay union employees for the cleaning they didn't do Posted by Gabriel Baird, Henry J. Gomez and Patrick O'Donnell May 17, 2008 06:49AM Peggy Turbett/Plain Dealer file Tired of Cleveland looking like a dump? Well, don't hire anyone to clean up public property. A union representing city laborers has objected to downtown business owners paying private crews for the last two years to rid public grounds of trash. And a labor arbitrator agreed that the work should have been done by public employees. More at cleveland.com

let me ask you all a question or two (or five :) ) about independent film...
"I don't believe ANYONE from u/o bothered to come to our film, which showed at the OIFF last week. There were only a handful of people who were there who weren't cast members or our immediate friends and family." While I can appreciate and understand your justified frustration, I don't know if that's a good tone to take. I understand that you're p!ssed but maybe it wasn't that your film and OIFF was ignored? I wouldn't necessarily interpret a lack of attendance as a lack of support. I'm only speaking for myself, but the last few weeks have been absurdly busy for me with freelance gigs and previous engagements. I've had to pass on a lot of different events that I'd hoped to attend, and when my schedule finally frees up - I'll be a lot more inclined to check out something if the people behind it took the approach of "catching more flies with honey than vinegar". :-)

Cleveland gets praise from sustainable business guru
http://grist.org/feature/2008/05/15/cleveland/ Those About to Rock Can Cleveland bring itself back from the brink? By Kristine Hansen 15 May 2008 "Most people know Cleveland by the Browns or The Flats," says Marc Lefkowitz. From the roof of his office building, which is dotted with native wildflowers and grasses, he gestures to the downtown skyline -- marked by the iconic Mittal Steel smokestacks that gave The Flats neighborhood its name -- and toward the beloved football team's stadium along the shimmering shores of Lake Erie. That two-pronged version of the city's reputation may be wishful thinking on the part of Lefkowitz, web editor for a local green nonprofit called Green City Blue Lake. Because most people -- if they give Cleveland much thought at all -- probably see it as a Rust Belt city, a victim of white flight and the decaying industrial economy, and of environmental gaffes in the 1970s when Lake Erie was declared dead and the nearby Cuyahoga River was so choked with pollution that it caught fire.

Cleveland: Flats East Bank
1. and 2. You're preaching to the choir. 3. It won't be a gated community, re-read the posts above. 3a. Love how you paint all the "aloof/elitist highrise population" with the same "shallow, greedy, consumption driven life" brush. 4. Okay, so Wolstein should abandon all of this, liquidate his company and make solar panels? 5. 15 years - that's the current abatement period. We'd all love to wave a magic wand and improve the schools overnight but we should cease all high-end development until the schools have improved? 6. Uhh, near west side neighborhood... like next to the West Side Market? 7. Welcome to the forum.

^Sounds like completely mindless speculation, and given that it's in the comments section on cleveland.com, consider the source.

I know there was a lot of speculation as far as what hotel brand it would be; I have to admit I didn't see that coming.

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
^To me who routinely walks a minimum of a mile on my lunch hour, it's fine. To Joe Conventioneer, not so much. But then again if they build a convention-sized hotel on site so the timid types never have to leave, that'd probably work.

No problem - and I've moved on to Juliana Hatfield (the ONLY song of hers that I like): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5uzLPB8iOg And keeping things on topic, as I look at the Gray's Green site, it looks like a better site as far as fitting without shoehorning, but the transit/pedestrian access falls short.

Gray Cells Green? :wtf: Red = Columbus; Yellow = Pittsburgh; Blue = Gray's Green site: Looking at it, and the adjacent lots - I have to say if they could creatively incorporate the Convocation Center, that could be interesting.

Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
^Same here. My partner and I tried it three times for brunch. Three times we were comped mimosas because of some royal f#ckup with the service. Not an "oops, forgot silverware", not "oops, brought the wrong order", more like "oh, I thought _____ was taking care of you" after 10 minutes of us staring at our menus - the person saying this was always within 10 feet of us, clearly seeing _____ had nothing to do with our table. As much as I like free booze, even I have a limit. That said, once we got attention from the server in question - the food was great.

Ohio: General Business & Economic News
How difficult is it to comprehend? 1. The Ohio Historical Society operates many of the better-known attractions in various spots. 2. Their budget has been slashed. 3. Their operating hours have suffered as a result. 4. It'll be hard to push tourism based around any of those attractions unless we want to send people to places that aren't open.
