 "Nice." Sustainable, no. Exacerbating sprawl in a region with a stagnant population? Yep! Adding to poor air quality by removing dozens of acres of healthy trees? H#ll yeah! Being harmful to the environment by building un-needed new retail space that's totally auto-centric in a day and age when fuel prices are at an all time high, with construction materials that will no doubt be shipped in from China? And you think this is "nice"?

Cleveland: Filling in Euclid Avenue
"And does anyone really think that someone from Beechwood or Westlake would drive into downtown, past crocker park and legacy village, to purchase their new love seat?" Or on the east side, would they skip Design Within Reach or Cottonwood? There used to be a higher-end store called Sweet Modern near the Halle Building (where Flourish is now located), they moved to Woodmere and I'm guessing they're no longer in business. I really think this study over-estimates the market demand of the region. Let's face it, there are only so many people willing to shell out $9K for a Eames chaise.

Anyone well versed in landlord-tenant law?
Hayward, there's no need to get so overly defensive. There's also no need to come off like a cynical know-it-all. I'm sure you're probably more aware of some legal rights afforded to tenants because of what you've gone through. However, when someone posts a question like this - there's nothing wrong with offering your input but a curt and disingenuous remark like "there's nothing you can do", what do you expect? Reading lots of manuals is admirable, but that really doesn't compare to someone's 14+ years of working in the field, including the resolution of landlord/tenant disputes. That's where I got the following feedback: The short version is that this falls into a gray area of where the management company's responsibility ends. Yes, rockandroller *could* conceivably have an argument here. However, she'd need to spend the time and effort compiling all the relevant info, preparing it etc. and then hope that whoever presided over the case would be sympathetic. She could also threaten to contact the City about the vermin/nuisance problem and most property management companies don't respond well to that. However that would possibly create a tension between rockandroller and the management. Management would likely provide all the evidence that they've made reasonable attempts to mitigate the problem, and also be able to claim "act of nature" and thus not directly their responsibility. Finally, they'd likely point to the contract and the 1-carport stipulation. It would be a long and drawn out process, take a substantial amount of time, and even after that, there are a few too many things pointing in the management company's favor. The best approach would be looking into subletting a carport, and if that's not an option - finding a parking spot away from the area, though that will obviously create inconvenience.

The Dating Thread
I don't mean that to sound snarky but let's face it, there are a lot of average and/or forgettable-looking guys who judge womens' appearances a lot more harshly than they're entitled to.

Looking to move from downtown cleveland
Just curious - what's motivating you to move out of downtown? If you're working in Brecksville but still want to be in the city, maybe Tremont could work for you.

Still more 80's Cleveland
There is NO such thing as a "short sleeved dress shirt", just as there is no such thing as a "short sleeved suit". If one is getting warm, one unbuttons one's cuffs and rolls up the sleeves. There is however NO doubt that these photos are awesome! And Barneyboy, I might be asking if I could host some of these on my site :-)

Hayward, with all due respect, I'm guessing you're not an attorney.

Downtown Cleveland in the early 80's
"On the other hand, wasn't the warehouse district pretty much all boarded up and devoid of stree life in the 80s?" Not completely - I remember serving food to the homeless in the City Mission (now Grand Arcade condos) in 1988. ;-)

CLEVELAND - Shame Shame I know your name!
"We have gone through all the channels. Cimperman, the DCA, City Hall, CPP (all the way to the commissioner)... and we are considering taking this to the media (that Joe Pagnakis at channel 5, or anyone, who realizes how ridiculous the downtown lighting problem is)." Growing up near Youngstown, I learned that there are times when you must enlist the help of unsavory characters to achieve a desired goal. ;-) Seriously though, why do we pay taxes? So we can have the most basic of services and if the CPP, Cimperman, or whoever is dragging their feet - shame them into action. It's sad that it will probably take that much to get something done but they brought it on themselves. It shouldn't take a few concerned citizens for them to realize how dangerous (perceived and otherwise) this is. Just don't call anyone who is "Everywhere". Please.

Akron: Random Development and News
Oh believe me, I know the spin they're going for. This is just more oversaturation and unsustainable development that a stagnant region doesn't need.

It's not like it's in a place where it can be enjoyed, either. But back to East 4th/Vegas Boulevard... ;-)

"Not sure who is designing all this stuff, but the interiors are all poorly done in my opinion." Not all of the spaces are my cup of tea and if they decided to take down the "torches" I'd show up with a wrench/sledgehammer in hand. Corner Alley - a bit over-the-top. Pickwick and Frolick - chintzy but given its use, "durable utilitarian minimalism" wouldn't be appropriate for a comedy club/cabaret complex. I actually like what they've done with Lola, and Saigon's not bad. Since you're in the business I'd really (sincerely) like to see what you've done. "Durable utilitarian minimalism" sounds great in theory but what does that look like? We know what it *doesn't* look like, but have we ever SEEN it? How appropriate would it be for an entertainment district?

Saigon has a handful of curry dishes - nothing Thai-specific, but I imagine they're good enough for a curry fix. Have to agree with peabody, now that I've tried a few dishes, the flavors are very good but a little less "baseball bat to the tastebuds" than other spots in town. And yeah, for a curry fix one Rapid stop from downtown - go with Phnom Penh.

^At that point, Playhouse Square theatres had just started to be renovated so yes, people cared. The problem was the Hippodrome stood directly across from a "beautiful" new office complex built at a time when suburban flight was at its zenith. And just like another "urban renewal" project on West 3rd and Ontario, it resulted in adjacent historic buildings being demolished:

"The store fronts all look occupied, there is lots of foot traffic," The same could be said about Tower City Center's shopping component - it appears healthy alright. Appears being the operative word.
