Energy Audit! What is your avg Kilowatt/hr month?
Thanks - considering that fluorescent light is some of the most punishing for human flesh of any race, this is very important. I mean, ever been to a place with fluorescent lights placed directly over the bathroom/restroom sinks?? It brings out more crepe-ing than a street festival in Paris! :-o

Energy Audit! What is your avg Kilowatt/hr month?
Does anyone know if there are CFL bulbs that DON'T give off that ghastly white "hydroponic growing lamp" light? I bought one that said "warm daylight" - my @ss; if their idea of "daylight" is blue-nuclear winter light... I was half-tempted to spray paint it beige and see if it would work.

Cleveland: National City Bank News & Info
"But National City's depressed share price and the troubled Midwestern markets it serves might be too appealing for a disciplined buyer like Wells Fargo to pass up." Okay, maybe it's too early, but I've read this three times and it still seems confusing to me. NatCity's depressed share price - okay, sure I can see why that would be appealing. "Troubled Midwestern markets" - tell me why THAT would be appealing?

Moving to Cincy. Looking for dog and gay friendly neighborhoods!
Steven, welcome to the forum. I have to agree with mcadrenalin's recommendation of Clifton's Gaslamp area. Hyde Park offers a lot of charming spots for a fun night out, etc. but for day-to-day living and walkability, I'd go with Clifton - think Cleveland's Edgewater with narrower streets and a more compact commercial strip. What really surprised me was when my friend showed me around Northside and said "here's the gayborhood" - it was like an ungentrified Ohio City with some interesting shops scattered about. I'm sure it's changed and improved since then but it was hard for me to compare that to Edgewater, arguably one of Cleveland's more upscale neighborhoods within the city limits. This isn't a slam against Cincy, but there's a palpable difference between the gay community in Cincy and Cleveland. I don't know if it's the recent history of Cincy (fortunately their bigotry ordinance was repealed) but the community doesn't seem to have as much visibility or political clout in Cincy. I would love to know why that is, or what factors contribute to that, or heck, if I'm way off base, I'd love to know that as well. Having spent quite a bit of time in Cincy over the past 10 years, it's just something I've noticed and I'd welcome any input.

Ohio: General Business & Economic News
I think the only point I really disagree with is this - your last paragraph could be construed as "regional approach means we should continue to empower and subsidize outer-ring development as equally as the inner city". That mentality sounds nice on the "let's cooperate" level, but it doesn't play out well in reality - see the I-90 Lear Road interchange "struggle" as an example. The core cities aren't the only places where egos inflate.

Today, I Overheard Someone in my City Say...
Give it a few years - "when they tell people the job is in an outer suburb, they turn it down because the high cost of gas and transit doesn't go there"

Ohio: General Business & Economic News
I don't know that it's a case of Akron doing something "right" as much as it's a case of Akron's a smaller city and is able to be more flexible to react to economic trends. With less infrastructure to be revitalized, less industries to be revamped, less public services to provide, it's in a better position simply by being smaller. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure there are some things that other cities could be learning from Akron. It probably doesn't hurt that Akron has a mayor with a lot of clout - like him or not, when Plusquellic wants something to happen, it usually does.

Ohio: Foreclosure News & Info
It's called "Ohio has LAX foreclosure laws that are in place thanks to vigorous lobbying by the state's very powerful banking industry". And to see some of the results of those lax lending laws, check the "National City Bank" thread http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,478.0.html

Cleveland: National City Bank News & Info
It's like most other industries - there used to be dozens and dozens of major car manufacturers in the US, now there are three. People were saying in 2000 that many of the "super-regional" banks (Key, National City, etc.) would be lucky to be in existence by the end of the decade and that's precisely what we're seeing. Keep in mind that NatCity was riding the mortgage tide in the good days - and thanks to the lax lending laws THEY lobbied for, they're now floundering.

Cleveland: National City Bank News & Info
Not necessarily - as the article said, it's not like National City is in the most desirable condition. And as far as both sides benefitting, definitely not - redundant employees at banks the size of NatCity number in the hundreds if not thousands. Then again, I remember talking two years ago to some people who work at National City and was scoffed at for suggesting they'd ever be in a position to be bought out.

What cities have you been to?
I'll bite - I just listed the cities I've been to, including some more obscure places (for sh!ts and giggles): http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&ie=UTF8&t=p&msa=0&ll=37.335224,-94.042969&spn=26.176318,55.634766&z=5&msid=111501388969053870983.00044841b0fe70d1b80a4

Cleveland: Ontario-Superior intersection caves in downtown
For whatever reasons, yesterday and today have been MUCH worse - and that's WITH police out directing traffic. We're talking a major backup from the Carter Road bridge, all along Old River Road to St. Clair - UP St. Clair hill and onto St. Clair proper. Lakeside wasn't much better.

Just an fyi - and I imagine those who are eligible already know but Saigon offers a 15% discount to those living on East 4th - you MUST have the official "East 4th" card, though.

I suppose it could be taken as the "FUBU" approach at first glance, but I think the website's explanation that willyboy quoted dispels that.

Blizzard of 08 Photos
"im gonna still say that the valentines day snowstorm last year was a little bit worse than this one for Cleveland." Having shoveled the drive and sidewalk during both, I heartily disagree. We definitely got about 18-20 inches in Tremont, and 2 to 3 feet in the drifts - last year I think we got about 12 to 14 inches - I'll always remember "14 on the 14th". Anyhoo, some pics from Tremont and downtown:

Cleveland Eateries: A Where To Guide for Visitors and Residents
Not sure of their hours, but if you're looking just to grab a bite to eat with drinks, I have to say I've had good luck with Wonder Bar - food was decent to really good (and not pricey if you split a bunch of apps), and service was fine (not amazing, but certainly good enough I'd go back).

My contribution to the thread: One thing I love about this weather - everybody gets cabin fever, so once the roads were passable, just about everywhere that was open was packed.

Living Car Free
" I would rank weather as a large factor, then unreliable buses, and finally potential safety issues (hanging around at bus stops near the kind of places I like to go may not be fun at midnight)." Having been car-free for a few years, I can safely say that paying for an occasional cab ride in cases of bad weather or off-hours is still much cheaper than car payments, insurance, gas, etc. Remember, being car-free is more about having your finances free to use ALL your available resources (walking, biking, scootering, transit, taxis, car-sharing, rentals, etc.) :-)
