Cleveland Eateries: A Where To Guide for Visitors and Residents
Stopped by Bar Cento last night before the Cleveland Public Art event - I had the warm olive (with ginger and orange slivers) appetizer, which was rather tasty, and a blanco pizza with prosciutto - pretty good and a large portion for the price. It was nice to have Brooklyn IPA on tap for $3.00 :-) My partner had the burger and said it was good, but between both of us we couldn't finish the fries. Oh well - being half-Irish I always say you can't have too many potatoes! I think you could probably order one appetizer with one of the specialty pizzas (above and beyond the blanco) and have enough for two. I'll definitely be back to try some more. Also stopped back at the Market Cafe at Amtrust - I'm beginning to really like their salads that are over by the pizza oven. Today was quinoa with roasted red pepper, spinach and (drooool...) kalamata olives. $2.50 gets you an almost-entree size serving. Only complaints are just like last time - dimwits carrying trays of food spinning around like whirling dervishes, and they really need to do something about the ventilation.

Peas? In guacamole? :-o Oh my holy god... I'm sorry, you truly seem like a very nice person and I'm sure your intentions are honorable but please, I beseech you - stop defiling the guac!!!

But you still don't spray the windex on a towel and then wipe the table, do you?

Nice shots - what's going on with Key Tower? They only had the tip top of the crown lit (along with their fugly logos).

Why does it seem that most people hate Cleveland?
David - I would recommend you walk in their shoes for a week, just as I would recommend they walk in yours.

The Baking / Cooking / Recipe Thread
MayDay's Guacamole - by request By far the most important ingredient of guacamole is the almighty avocado, thus guacamole is not something you should make "spur of the moment". It's best to find 4 to 6 avocados. Make sure to ask for Hass/Haas - you don't want "California" avocados (god only knows what they're good for). It's best to get them when they're green and firm as a rock and you can plan to make the guac four days after purchase. Place them in a paper bag with an overripe banana and close it up. Within three or four days, the avocados should be tender - you should be able to press in your thumb like an overripe orange - malleable, not squishy. It's truly a learned art. The exterior will be a purplish-brown. You should never pay more than $1.50 each - go to local markets and grocers as chain stores like Giant Eagle charge $3.00 a pop. Once you have ripened avocados at their zenith, make sure you have the following: 5 to 6 plum (roma) tomatos, diced 1 half of one white (no other kind - WHITE) onion, minced (preferably in a processor) 5 to 7 "sprigs" of fresh cilantro (never ever dried), finely chopped 1 half of one jalapeño pepper - finely minced Juice from 1 half of a lime (never EVER anything but fresh) Salt (sea salt if you've got it) to taste Take the avocados and slice lengthwise in half - note the large pit/seed in the center. Slice around the pit so you can twist each half apart. Take a spoon and scoop out the avocado flesh. If it's not completely ripe, pre-slice the fleshy areas lengthwise and they'll mush and scoop easier. Repeat for all avocados, saving one of the seeds. Place fleshy bits into large serving bowl and mush with clean hands or a fork. Once mushed, add all above ingredients - saving salt and lime for last (since they're to taste). Taste test with some chips and serve with love. Now - so help me god, if I ever hear of anyone adding MAYONNAISE to guacamole, I will stab you in the eye with a rusty serrated knife. There aren't many things on this earth that I hold sacred, but the integrity of guacamole is one of them. :whip:

Cleveland: Ohio City: Development and News
My site? No, that's nowhere to be found on clevelandskyscrapers.com, aside from the fuzzy image used as a rendering. That project (and rendering) *does* appear on the Cleveland compilation thread in the Projects and Construction thread on the skyscraperpage.com forum (owned and operated by Dylan LeBlanc from British Columbia), by virtue that I added it last March. http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=97396 As you can see, it's under the "Proposed" section in that thread - the same place it's been since it was proposed in 2007.

What do you get on your burrito?
I just have a hard time eating guacamole that I haven't made - it really needs to be served fresh, like within 2-3 hours of its creation. Years ago, I dated a guy (native of Mexico) who turned out to be an utter louse but I did manage to get a guac recipe (and a leather jacket) out of the relationship. Needless to say, the guac recipe was by far the best thing I got from that entanglement.

Um, that's Charter Place, slated for Detroit along the West 30s, was announced March of last year - it's hardly a new project, so Cleveland - what's the deal?

Today, I Overheard Someone in my City Say...
Grey Poupon? No, he was driving an old Buick - I doubt he'd even cough up for Stadium Mustard. Seriously - that's one of the biggest disconnects with the people who "don't get it". Ample free parking = WalMart parking lot. Scarce pricey parking = usually vibrant neighborhood or CBD. There is no compromise for that in NYC, Chicago, etc., but for some reason there should be in Cleveland :wtf:

Cleveland: Flats East Bank
Let's see - Bank of America, the New York Times, Hearst Publishing and a host of other high-profile corporations have built or are building new signature towers. I seriously doubt Eaton would subscribe to such tired alarmist idiocy.

Today, I Overheard Someone in my City Say...
Today: Car idling at East 6th and St. Clair, gentleman rolls down window and asks "Where's the Board of Education"? I point across the block. He says "where do people usually park there?" I say "well, the staff have parking under the building, but there's a garage around the corner, a lot across the street and sometimes you can find a meter.". He says "so you have to pay to park anywhere?" I said "yes, just like any other big city, you have to pay to park."

Why does it seem that most people hate Cleveland?
It's the same thing that happened at the cleveland365.com event - your event coordinator needs to be an absolute b@llbuster who leaves nothing to chance. Otherwise, there's not enough seating, crowds are talking during presentations, "appetizers" consist of a bag of Gardettos and baby carrots, self-important people drone on over their allotted time, etc. Like rockandroller said - it's not just that specific event, it's getting people to go to future events instead of saying "ugh, that was awful, like I'd subject myself to that again!".

All right, it's my official opinion that Sketchup sucks, so I went primitive and used Photoshop. Anyhoo, I needed to do something after working on a reader service card to get my eyes to uncross. Here's a start of what I'd do with the intersection of Lake and Detroit - don't laugh too hard:
