  1. I'd say there are a few spots along West 14th in Tremont (La Tortilla Feliz, the former "Church" space), etc.
  2. Welcome to the forum and welcome to Cleveland! You'll get plenty of advice here - just skimming over your post, here's what I have to offer: Lakewood's Gold Coast (a cluster of a dozen or so high-rises along Edgewater Drive and the Lake Erie shoreline) is probably at the upper limit of your 20-minute drive to UH, but I know a lot of the construction has thick concrete floors (aka loud music might be workable). Any further west would probably not be feasible, given your potential schedule. Just a heads up - the area isn't in the most happening neighborhood - don't get me wrong, there are a few bars and restauarants in walking distance but it's not "saturated" with nightlife. Here is a rental in Winton Place, the tallest residential tower in Greater Cleveland and likely the poshest highrise on the Gold Coast: http://www.pluggedincleveland.com/rentals/view.cgi?num=3793 Next door is the Carlyle (this unit offers a garage space): http://www.pluggedincleveland.com/rentals/view.cgi?num=3688 And another in Marine Towers East: http://www.pluggedincleveland.com/rentals/view.cgi?num=3487

    Sausages and alpacas, oh my!!!

    ^I'm sure I don't know WHAT you're referring to.
  5. A little bit of both. Some of it (particularly near Columbiana) is Pittsburgh sprawl as well - quite a few pilots based at PIT live in Ohio.
  6. ^It's further out than that - Columbiana and Salem have experienced the same thing.
  7. I see no blur, foolish mortal!
  8. Things to take with you: 1. Camera. 2. Notebook. 3. Working pen. 4. Laptop if you got it. 5. Camera. Things to take away with you: 1. All printed materials available. 2. Notes - detailed notes. Thank you :-)
  9. Likely City Buddha in Cleveland Heights; possibly Jewel Heart on West 14th (their website has a place http://www.jewelheartstore.com/.
  10. I know - look at how gleaming the restored section is - if they do that to the entire building? Yowza!
  11. Another photo I took in 16F temps - show some gratitude folks! ;-)
  12. Latest and greatest of the Terminal Tower restoration (I took this when it was 16F outside, you folks better be grateful! :whip: :-D)
  13. Just adding a photo of the Realty Building in Youngstown:
  14. Most of the southern end of Tremont (south of 490) is part of that as well. It's so much easier to chuck the Great Lakes empties in the containers than schlep dozens a few down to Pilgrim Church!
  15. I usually do that for extra-long posts that take more than one sitting to complete, or if my computer is acting up and I'm worried I might lose a lot of work.
  16. Wellll, I lost quite a few posts as well so I feel your pain - and yeah it's a royal PITA (pain in the...) but honestly, Rich is doing the best he can with what he has. Given the track record (aside from the recent hiccup), this site's performance is top-notch. I've been on the skyscraperpage.com forum for almost 10 years and over there, I've probably had dozens (if not low hundreds) of posts get zapped by technical difficulties or other crap that happens during upgrades. I'm not trying to trivialize your frustration (I feel it too - I'm not even sure WHAT posts I need to recreate) and I'm not trying to be a jerk and say "suck it up" but I really think Rich needs to be cut some slack. He doesn't get paid to do this; it's not his livelihood to ensure the site is always perfect and up 24/7 - for us to demand that of him really isn't fair. One recommendation I'd make - if you have a post you want to keep for future referencing - right-click, select "View Source" and save that file wherever. It'll at least give you something to work with and you can save it on your own system.
  17. When we last left off, we had departed Freeport, Bahamas. The next morning we arrived in Nassau, Bahamas - population about 250K. Nassau is the largest city in the Bahamas and the capitol. View from the cruise ship: The historic British Colonial Hilton, featured in the Bond films "Thunderball" and "Never Say Never Again": The Atlantis resort (which we didn't get to see up close): Resorts and hotels of the Cable Beach area (3 miles west of the port): Just across the bay from the port, this home has frontage on both sides of Paradise Island: The main government building: We hopped off the ship, I tried to get all 855 feet in one shot but oh well: Most stores were closed for Christmas and for preparation for the Junkanoo parade: The other side of the British Colonial Hilton: En route to Cable Beach: No egg nog this Christmas for me! :D After a few hours of basking in the sun and frolicking in the water, we took the jitney bus (75 cents!) back to the ship: Near the port is a tightly-packed area of shops: Atlantis again: I absolutely love their logo: I decided to get some braids in my hair: Just kidding! ;) Another ship in port - note the submergables: Later that evening was the beginning of the Junkanoo festival and parade http://www.junkanoo.com. We were tired and considered skipping it - someone said the parade was mostly handcrafted costumes - we were thinking chintzy wicker - how wrong we were. The craziness goes until dawn, we made it till 2:30am: The next day, we caught another glimpse of Freeport: And other enjoyable sights onboard ;) Last sunset of the cruise: And while I love Cleveland, it was rather sobering to see this on our flight back into the 216: Hope you enjoyed!
  18. Sooo, last summer my partner suggested traveling during the holidays. It would be my first Christmas away from my family but they gave us their blessings so I told him "find somewhere warm, affordable, and preferably at least second-world (aka water/electricity). He worked his magic with priceline, hotwire and who knows what else and he managed to find a great deal for a Carnival cruise to the Bahamas. We stayed at the Florida Mall Hotel in Orlando - the hotel was nice enough, and being attached to a large regional mall with Saks and Nordstrom - well, I was a happy camper. Added bonus - our room faced downtown Orlando which has a small but impressive skyline: We didn't get a chance to explore the area beyond the mall - maybe next time. Exterior shot of the hotel as we head to Port Canaveral: Yep, on our way to the coast! Almost there: Two other cruise ships - Disney and I believe a Norwegian: Our ship - the Sensation (which I had to say "SenSATION!!!" with 'jazz hands'): Inside the ship - we had heard that the decor was dated, which it was; that it was a little Vegas-y, which it was. But hey, we didn't mind and I kind of liked some of the retro look. The main atrium: Some artwork in the corridors - told you it was retro ;-) Back to the Promenade deck for our muster drill (aka the practice run with life jackets in case we hit an iceberg). We had a view of the distant NASA Vehicle Assembly building - about 500-ish feet tall: It said Great Lakes and I thought it was a floating brewery - imagine my disappointment. But the gorgeous sunset made up for it: Our stateroom had two of these funky windows. This is the ship channel heading into Freeport: Freeport (population about 26K) was charming - they're still recovering from being hit by three major hurricanes. We took a $5 cab (well, an old Toyota minivan) to the Lucaya Beach area. Being a British colony, they drive on the other side of the road: We arrive at the Lucaya Beach area - some cute/touristy shops were around here: And Lucaya Beach... the aquamarine/turquoise color of the water was surreal: You're welcome, guys ;-) Gecko? Geico? But it was time for lunch - we couldn't have planned it any better as it clouded up later so we got plenty of sun in the morning and had plenty of beer in the afternoon: And what else would we have - conch fritters (drooool...) There were quite a few police about - I think they were there to reassure tourists more than anything else: Just some shots from around the Lucaya Marketplace: Okay, a resin statue of a pirate hoochie... umm: The Sheraton: The bus stops were absolutely adorable: The tallest building in Freeport, a condo tower undergoing renovation: Back to the ship, I took some shots of the Port Lucaya area: View of Freeport from the ship: Next up - Nassau, Bahamas! http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=143481
  19. As someone who is all too familiar with yuppie frou-frou, I can assure you that Au Bon Pain (best said as "AWWBAWWPANNNN!!!!" with a bad accent) is anything but frou-frou. Fyi, Stone Oven in the Galleria brews City Roast (aka Civilization in Tremont) coffee. It's not a cafe per se, but at least they're offering something 1. good and 2. local.

  21. Any way to make a "heads up" post stickied across all the boards? I can imagine a lot of people don't check "Forum Issues" very often.

This rendering is provided by McCleveland - looks like they're keeping the historic parts intact on the ground floor:
  23. Uhh... yeah, take my comments seriously - that was my intent  Newsflash, Cincy's skyline looks great already - this is just going to add even more dimension.

Distance-wise, the Statler isn't a long walk from Public Square. Throw in 20-degree temps and 20mph windds and I can assure you that it's not exactly pleasant. Throw in the (as of now, but soon to be alleviated) streetlights that have been dimmed and it can be a little foreboding. Throw in the panhandlers (who seem to be congregating at 515 Euclid) and you have yet another nuisance. But as others have said, the E-Line trolley goes until 11pm so that's an option.
