  1. Okay, so this wigged me out a little and it's been bugging me ever since. Picture it: At the grocery store, minding my own business (like I do) and trying to pick out something to grill that evening. Then, I see out of the corner of my eye a person wearing a hoodie and baggy pants - given the area, I think nothing of it until I realize they're standing next to me. The person is a female - pasty, with slightly sunken eyes but the type who could be pretty with nourishment and sunlight (you get the idea). She then proceeds to ask me "Excuse me, are you going to be paying for your groceries in cash?". :wtf: :wtf: :wtf: Stunned, I did the first thing that came to mind and began speaking "Ehhh...No Enn...glish... no..." and she apologized and quickly scurried off into some dark corner. Hey, I speak English quite nicely but I was hungry and let me tell ya - that "no English" thing has worked rather frequently! Anyway - my mind started racing (like it does) and I thought - why would she ask such a thing? If I said "no, credit card" would she launch into a tirade of the evils of Visa/Mastercard? Would she have pulled a gun and told me to use a debit card and get some cash out for her? Then the other day, my galpal at the gym said she had someone do the SAME thing at a store in Lakewood?!? Was she part of a band of roving hoodie-wearing gypsies!?!?! Again - :wtf: :wtf: :wtf: :wtf: :wtf: So can anyone tell me why she was asking that? I guess I need to work on looking less approachable
  2. If they're the same owners of Cafe Istanbul that's in Easton in Columbus - they're terrific. Obviously I wouldn't know if you need rezzies but the food (if they're one and the same) is fantastic.
  3. Folks, if you've ever seen the movie "Metropolis" by Fritz Lang (a movie far ahead of its time) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0017136/, it conveys what Morrison is suggesting.
  4. When I heard that someone was buying Moda, I had to wonder 1. who and 2. what kind of space would it become. If we were talking a low-key, higher-end spot - I think the area would be supportive. But Heaven and Earth? I think "heaven and earth" is what they'll have to move to get that place reopened as a club - w28th's right, the Flats location has been a source of bad news for a long time.
  5. From crainscleveland.com: http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20071213/FREE/71213011/1004&Profile=1004 KeyBank Center changes hands By STAN BULLARD 9:03 am, December 13, 2007 Behringer Harvard REIT I Inc., a Dallas-based real estate investment company, has added another downtown Cleveland skyscraper to its portfolio as it completed its $1.4 billion purchase of Toronto-based IPC US REIT. KeyBank Center, which occupies the southwest corner of Superior Avenue and East Ninth Street, is one of 34 buildings in IPC’s portfolio that Behringer Harvard acquired in the deal. Behringer Harvard also owns the Fifth Third Center office building, just west on the same block, which it bought in 2006. Behringer in a news release did not disclose a purchase price for individual properties. Behringer said it paid $600 million in cash and assumed $800 million in debt in acquiring IPC US REIT. The 23-story KeyBank Center building has 477,784 square feet of office space. It dates from 1968 and was renovated in 2006. Behringer is privately traded but is listed with the Securities and Exchange Commission. KeyBank Center is the second skyscraper on Superior Avenue to trade in as many weeks. American Landmark Properties Ltd. of Chicago on Dec. 7 bought the 1100 Superior office building, which is named after its address. The Cuyahoga County Auditor’s web site indicated an American Landmark subsidiary paid $47 million for the 576,085-square-foot building at 1100 Superior.

Great set - and you got my favorite skyline view (from 490)
  7. It was much better as the Diner on Sycamore - as Vinyl, the place (and people) took themselves waaaay too seriously.
  8. Folks... please...

Don't get me wrong - I love Pittsburgh as well, I just don't have some sociopathic dislike for it like that jerkoff has for Cleveland.

Check out the post by 3bob1977, folks - we've officially been called out by the same troll who perks up here and on tremonter.com! What a sad f#ck. http://blog.cleveland.com/plaindealer/2007/12/clevelands_money_crunch_no_mor.html
  12. Welcome to the forum, brandie. From some people I've spoken to (who work in the building for Key, but are NOT at a level of decision-making regarding site selection), the problems with the May building range from a general lack of updated interiors, awkward layouts due to columns, and an overall dingey feel to the current space. They didn't reference any specific shortcomings such as power supply or tech infrastructure but that may be because they didn't think it was an appropriate topic over cocktails ;-)

Welcome to Cleveland and to urbanohio, bewwolv15! I'd recommend checking careerboard.com - they seem to have better local listings than the other job boards.
  14. I think you mean the area around the columns just above the scaffolding. It looks beige, but it's not really bright so there's almost a taupe cast to the light.

Happy B-Day! Get it?!? Nyuk nyuk nyuk.
  16. Yet a few more levels of scaffolding have been removed from the Terminal Tower - nice way to start the week:
  17. Folks... you're debating the merits of fast-food sandwich chains, when Cincy has some perfectly respectable locally-owned businesses. Really now.
  18. *Ahem* - Sapell's, and they're the Bi-Rite in question.

^D@mn you... now I'll have "believe it or not, I'm walking on air..." going through my head ALL day!!!
  20. ""There's always been that worry with the auto industry. You just don't know if it's going to be here or not." I'd say that's for manufacturing in general - and it's precisely why my parents insisted that my brother and I would go to college.
  21. It's okay - it's just that even though it was a more cerebral discussion than most off-topic posts, we have to keep things tidy. :-)
  22. Folks, when a Mod asks you to get back on topic - is it really too much to just do that? If you want to continue a conversation, there's always the private message system.

If you decide to go with a forum format, it's imperative that you be able to devote time to moderating it. Ask me how I know ;-)
  24. I think Clevelanders (not necessarily those on this forum but the general public) are slightly behind the curve when it comes to condos/pricing because the city has been so historically skewed to single-family homes. That's changed a lot in recent years but I still hear people say things like "why would I spend $250K on a 1,200 sq. ft. condo when I could get a 2,500 sq. ft. house with a yard?". Well not everyone wants the burden of cleaning and maintaining that additional space, not everyone puts a premium on having a patch of grass, etc. If I were living on my own, I'd absolutlely be looking for a smaller condo with upgraded amenities/finishes - there's not a chance in h#ll I'd even consider a single-family home.
