  1. Don't worry - I'm good with the casual stuff but once the dress codes kick in, I'm a little iffy. You'll be dealing with "extremely wealthy" people, so don't be intimidated and try to overcompensate. Be yourself, be calm, cool, and collected and don't feel you have to keep up with Suzy McGucci - your Midwestern charm will likely be a novelty. Coming from Chicago, they're probably not going to expect you to be head-to-toe in the most avant garde ensemble. I'd start with Nordstrom on Michigan Avenue - they're usually good about having someone on staff who can put looks together for you, and they'll have more variety than just going to a boutique at a time. Tell them exactly what you're going for - and if they start bringing out the flashy/trashy stuff - don't be afraid to say "sorry, but not for me". If you have a budget and they bring out stuff that's waaay too pricey, don't be afraid to say "I'm trying to keep it around $____". It sounds silly but if you don't know your measurements - have someone take them and remember them by heart. Oh, and absolutely NO pleated pants. I imagine you'll need a suit - like you said, you don't want anything flashy but something nice enough that people won't scoff. Go for looks like the following, but pair it with a shirt (try Banana Republic - decent shirts at a good price) that will bring out your eyes (they're blue, right?).: This would work for the really hoity-toity spots: (From Nordstrom): For a more casual place (from Kenneth Cole): Upscale (from Kenneth Cole): Casual (from Kenneth Cole): A reliable outfit is the blazer/shirt/jeans combo: since you're going out to trendy nightspots, keep the blazer simple, the jeans can be a little fun and absolutely have a good pair of shoes. Again - you'll want to be able to get mileage out of them so KISS (keep it simple, stupid) always applies. The following pair from Kenneth Cole would work with dress pants or jeans, look nice enough but without spending an arm and a leg: Jeans-wise, go for a dark color, slimmish (but NOT skinny) fit, and a clean finish (no pre-shredded, graffiti-strewn looks) - something along these lines. Note how the jeans have a nice break just below the ankle (Citizens of Humanity - available at Nordstrom): http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/2946073/0~2376780~6009391~6009808~6009812?mediumthumbnail=Y&origin=category&searchtype=&pbo=6009812&P=1 Avoid this kind of look (the color is too light, the fit is too baggy, and the detailing is waaay over-the-top) (True Religion Jeans): That's a start - I'm sure you'll get plenty of feedback from others :-)
  2. Salem had a G.C. Murphy downtown and a Murphy Mart in the eastern section (strip plaza central).
  3. "A bunch of hotties are in front of me. Distractions." In Columbus? On *this* forum? The h#ll you say!
  4. It works for me (Mac user here as well) - load the site, then click "stand alone" and give it a minute. You may have to close the browser window once it starts playing unless you like an echo.
  5. Velocity closing - not so shocking; Lozada's closing - shocking indeed!
  6. A few more - L&K Restaurant, Kings department store, and not quite as historic but Twin Valu. I remember reading somewhere that a lot of the repurposed Red Barns are basically as solid as a bunker. Something about solid steel construction...
  7. I had a Guiness-battered chicken sandwich - pretty good, I'd say a 6.5 out of 10. Don't know that this would be on my list of usuals but it's good for a change of pace.
  8. I think they're around $8-$9 for sandwiches, $11ish for entrees at lunch. And despite the neon sign in the window, they did NOT have any Great Lakes on tap (bottles yes, tap no).
  9. Chuck Wimmer does some cool funky printwork (Giclee) - http://www.loftprints.com/; you can see some of his work at Eye Candy Gallery in Tremont. http://www.eyecandy-gallery.com/ If you're looking for inexpensive photos - check Cleveland & Beyond in the Arcade. They also do framing there at a reasonable price.

"But no one has really plugged the positives yet..." Minh Anh - one of THE best Vietnamese restaurants around...
  11. My god, the flashbacks... in Salem, we had Red Barn, Burger Chef (their fun meals f'in ROCKED), and Lawsons - storewise there was Murphy Mart, Consolidated, and Big Wheel.

"Don't know why people get jumped on so quickly so often on this board." It's the pendulum swinging too far in the direction of focusing on the positive - no one here supports baseless and needless bashing of an area. However, it's silly to question someone EVERY single time anyone dares to suggest an area might be less desireable. Sorry FH2H, there are rough neighborhoods in Cleveland just like there are rough areas anywhere and it's really not necessary to get so defensive when someone even questions that.
  13. guv, I get the feeling that people on this board (and in the world) need to realize that when someone says something - it's not a black-and-white decree. I agree that the new policy is probably too heavy-handed and that like the kid at Caribou that 8Shades mentioned, there are going to be some good kids unjustly thrown out. Did I say that every teen that sets foot in Tower City is a h#llraising thug and should be throttled and given the heave-ho? No. Did I say that Forest City is completely correct with their approach? No. So why are you implying that I did? What I HAVE been saying for years that they've needed to actually enforce the "Code of Conduct" that's been posted, and beef up security (number of staff). If the place LOOKED like it was well-staffed and supervised, they wouldn't have had to resort to this measure. Of course, they'd have to spend a little extra to maintain that level of staffing but that's another story. What I'd like to see is Forest City making a nice donation (thanks to the numerous abatements they've received, I'm sure they could afford it) to the area rec centers and after-school programs. It'd be a nice tax write-off, and more to the point - actively support the places where the kids SHOULD be - you know, where my tax dollars go to help them? As far as the comments on the cleveland.com site - those are made by anonymous morons and while they reflect some peoples' sentiments, remember - they're unmoderated, and they're on cleveland.com - need I say more? As far as "obligations", I do not buy this horsesh!t notion that it is somehow my, yours, or anyone elses' obligation to mentor another human in the most basic elements of civility. Speaking as a once less-fortunate person, the one thing I *didn't* have to be taught was the simplest level of respect. No, I wasn't perfect but I sure as sh!t didn't pull crap like what I saw at Tower City. At some point, people have to take responsibility for their own actions and no amount of noblesse oblige will instill that.
  14. ^Why? This article basically tells us everything we've already heard - although it's news to me that Northwest Airlines is a "big local employer" :wtf: Does someone work for the Plain Dealer? I see the following didn't get bolded: "Nationwide problem - Cleveland's situation is not unique." "Her concern is that many recently regenerated neighbourhoods in New York will soon be blighted by crisis again."
  15. Why do so many recent public art sculptures look positively deranged?
  16. FH2H, the Federal Building isn't being enlarged - the western plaza (facing East 6th) is being reworked into an "urban forest" (whatever that means). I know that the interior has been rehabbed for quite some time. The GSA (people who call the shots for DFAS/Federal Building) decided that they'd rather work with what they have than build new. I was able to go to the 57th floor thanks to a friend, fellow forumer Paul_In_Cleveland - he knew someone at KeyBank who arranged for us to go to 57 (the last official office floor). When we got to 57, the security person said "if you'd sign a waiver, we can let you outside" - outside meaning where the pyramid starts - aka the only people usually out there are the window washers. Had the Key logos been installed, we could have reached up and touched them :-o Needless to say, they don't let people do that any more and it was absolutely an amazing experience.
  17. Alright, so as I did some cleaning this weekend. I came across some photos I took from back in the day (like 1999 - give or take three years) when I used a camera that had this odd material in it - I think it's called "film"? Anyhoo, I scanned in the pics I took, (a lot from the top of Key Tower) and they're pretty random but what the heck - enjoy: Industrial Valley (from Key) Terminal Tower (from Key) - when *haven't* they been working on it? CBD and CSU: Terminal sans netting and scaffolding - all those ugly antennae are gone: From the 58th "floor" of Key - don't get close to the edge! From the Federal Court House tower - pre-Stonebridge Tower: Fed Court tower under construction: Ohio Bell/SBC/Ameritech/AT&T/NameOfTheWeek: Detour to Metropolitan Bank building in Youngstown: The Arcade, circa 1998: Osborn Building - beginning of rehab. For those of you who b!tch that nothing ever gets done in Cleveland :-) Another one for the b!tchers: From the schmutz-covered windows of the Federal Court tower: From Independence - Fed Court tower under construction: Lemko Hall in Tremont: I remember when it was just this lone little building: Eek! Scary gargoyles in the Arcade: Hopefully we'll see something like this near Public Square *cough*Jacobs&Stark*cough* Ahh, before the brilliant  marketing people had their way: One of my favorite "streetwalls": Unused but unthreatened when this was taken: Twilight from Tremont: From the West Shoreway: Nope - they never build anything new in Cleveland: Condo conversion? That'd be nice! When Nautica was a bunch of bleachers: And the Time Warner/Tower City wedding tent was a parking lot: Soon to be part of Great Lakes Brewing? Currently being restored - here's how it should look when it's back in shape: 200 Public Square and a lot of interstate-scarred real estate: Federal Building - let's see, their landscaping job ("urban forest") has taken longer to build than the Avenue District. :wtf: Chisel this! Another one for the b!tchers (where 515 Euclid now sits): I'm on a roll! "Keep it coming, love! Keep it coming, love! Don't stop it now, don't stop it, no, don't stop it now, don't stop!" Nope - nothing new gets built here: One seriously bad-@ss monument in Lakeview Cemetery: The first time that taking a photo of Key Tower actually made me dizzy: "Don't let your well run dry, don't stop it now. Don't give me no reasons why, don't stop it now!" Guard this! Lakewood from Key Tower - still wondering what that blur is on the horizon... North Olmsted, methinks? Another detour - this time Pittsburgh: It's my thread, why not?! Earth curvature and Terminal Tower - does it get any better? Some green roofs down there! And rounding it out, some views which will look drastically different in the next few years! :-)
  18. Amen - *that* needs to be sent as a letter to the editor to every pub in the region.
  19. ^^I thought you paid more attention.
  20. "Also, how are they going to attracted teens to work at the mall during the holidays?" As they've said ad nauseum - employees who are in their teens will get ID badges.
  21. They're incapable of suggesting anything that might possibly involve them compromising any of their little fifedom. Typical small-town, exurban "big fish in a small pond" mentality.
  22. Another week, another floor:
  23. "I would imagine that only a small portion of students in Tower City actually create any disturbance of note or commit any petty crimes." Not that I disagree with all of your post, but out of curiosity - have you ever worked in Tower City? I try to be diplomatic and I truly try to give people the benefit of the doubt but ummmm... :|
  24. Cry me a river... as if the city or Forest City Enterprises is obligated to be their babysitters. From cleveland.com: Students, activists to protest at Tower City Posted by Donna J. Miller November 02, 2007 11:47AM Categories: FYI Black On Black Crime, Survivors/Victims of Tragedy and Cleveland school students will speak outside Tower City at 3:15 today about the new policy that keeps teens out of the building when not accompanied by a parent or guardian. The activists are calling the rally the National Blackout Day Movement. From cleveland.com http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2007/11/_black_on_black_crime.html
  25. "It was actually my girlfriend who told me about that and as required by higher authorities (namely her), I believed her." It's okay - trust me, no one here would ever encourage you to do or say anything that might upset the girlfriend. We want accurate info, but we also want our forum members to be unscathed. We wouldn't want her to resemble ---> :whip: or :x or :shoot: And we definitely don't want to be responsible for any :box: or :argue:
