Urban Ohio "Picture Of The Day"
I'm not terribly afraid of heights but dear god, I would NOT want to be THIS guy!!! (from the Terminal Tower):

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
No, you should get off the cross and realize that no one was saying "what a stupid idea"; there's no need for the melodramatics. They're simply pointing out some concerns that would be involved in what you're suggesting, and they're also pointing out things you already admitted you don't know. Does a premium "business class" Red Line from the airport sound like a great idea? Yes, initially it does but apparently you don't want anyone to factor in everything else that would go into creating it. It's like CTownsFinest saying that there should be a 2,000 foot tall office tower on Public Square and the only reason there isn't one already is because people don't want it bad enough. Sorry, the world and RTA don't exist in a bubble - make all the suggestions you want (no one's discouraging that) but don't get all p!ssy when your suggestion is critiqued. Btw, the Red Line to the airport is heavy rail, not light rail ;-)

Cleveland: are there really old walking tunnels under the City?
Are you sure about that? ;-)

Cleveland: Cuyahoga County Gov't properties disposition (non-Ameritrust)
I worked adjacent to the building at the time - there was never a 5/3rd sign there.

Ohio: Foreclosure News & Info
"Many of the houses would be better off demolished and the yards annexed by neighbors, Brancatelli said." Sounds like a component of Youngstown's "Shrinking City" initiative is coming to Cleveland.

No, but give it a few months - some curmudgeonly small business owner who's never advertised or dusted off the cobwebs on their inventory will no doubt close shop and blame it all on Wal-Mart, the city, UrbanOhio, etc.

Winton Place - Lakewood
From what I gather, it's one of the better buildings in the Gold Coast and neighborhood-wise, it's great. I would imagine you'd want to find out what the maintenance/association fees are (I've heard they're higher than others but they probably provide more amenities), as well as making sure she understands that Lakewood's taxes are higher than other western 'burbs. If I was on my own, I'd consider living there.

Foreign Languages
I speak/read Spanish somewhere between the "tourist" and "moderate" level. I know more than "el baño por favor" but whenever someone speaks Spanish to me, I usually have to say "NOOOO rapidamente, no comprendo!". I also know a lot of Yiddish terms for a goyim.

She wasn't among the robbed, but it was three of her friends who had left a rehearsal dinner.

"Especially when it costs $44.00 to take a cab from the airport to downtown now." No, it doesn't. They rescinded that price increase - don't ask me what the new price is, but it's not that high.

"The Breuer building as home? That would be a very tough sell?" Not with the views you'd have - south and west facing units would have views of and into Jacobs Field, upper floor units would likely have Lake (and maaaybe river views), and just about everyone would see the following but imagine seeing this at 350'+ (taken from the attached parking garage - and attached parking would be a great selling point):

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
That's unfortunate - I've met Hannah (turns out she's from my hometown) and she's one of the biggest advocates for Cleveland: Hannah's account of the incident on her blog at cleveland.com: http://www.cleveland.com/weblogs/theview/ I have to say I'd heard about a rash of robberies targeting late-nighters in Tremont, and these jack@sses sound like the perps in most of them. Hopefully they string them up by their #$@&@!

Cleveland: Marketing the City
The only Navy Pier-esque thing I'd like to see is more amenities and better connections between each of the lakefront attractions, and of course, a better connection to the CBD. Other than that, I don't see a Navy Pier doing anything other than taking away from what's already here. As far as increasing our immigration draw - absolutely, I'd be happy to organize a walking tour for the new arrivals!

Cleveland: Bank Recommendation Wanted
Unfortunately that's very common with most banks - it's their way to prevent losses should someone decide to ligitate.

Suggestions to make a new bar successful (my bar!)
Absolutely - Prosperity has a $5 burger on Tuesdays and $4 quesadillas on Wednesdays. Neither of those are the world's best but they're pretty good and at that price (along with happy hour drink prices) it makes going out for dinner that much easier to justify. Any business on a slow night is good business, even if it's not the big spenders.

Suggestions to make a new bar successful (my bar!)
Sorry, I just see that as a throwback and the typical life cycle for bar owners who are only out to make a buck. Open as a super-trendy joint; once the novelty wears off, offer "nights" for the marginalized populations; when that fails, it's college ID time. Besides, given the location I'd say it'll be a mixed place anyway.

Suggestions to make a new bar successful (my bar!)
Yeah, we call that a bar where everyone feels welcome on whatever night.

"A tortilla? How dare you insult me with a ethnic comment like that!" Easily - ask ColDayMan. Would it be better if I said "disko"?

I'm with X, I think you're overreacting and read the article with a tortilla on your shoulder. You're making this a tempest in a teacup.

Downtown Cleveland Move
"Tremont: Maybe it was the drizzle, maybe the weekday afternoon, but the area looked a bit empty and run down." I guess the run-down part is subjective - I'm not disagreeing, but it's like many gentrifying neigborhoods with new luxury townhomes next to homes that need some polish. There's not usually a lot of foot traffic on weekday afternoons - Tremont is mostly a residential/entertainment area rather than any kind of business/commercial hub. Visit on an artwalk night and Tremont can get pretty hopping. Fortunately it sounds like you found a few other places that will work for you :-)

Cleveland: Steelyard Commons
Yep, West 25th - the 807/Tremont circulator picks up from there, and there are bus stops right in SYC. Not the most direct or ideal but do-able.

Have you written the PD to complain about their lack of diversity and the reflection thereof in this article?!? ZING!

Cleveland: Steelyard Commons
If you mean that you want a typical big-box store (one level, 150K sq. ft. footprint plus acres of surface parking) in downtown, then quite frankly you have no understanding of urban planning - an auto-centric store like that has no business being downtown. If you mean a big-box store with a more urban configuration (hidden and structured parking, multiple levels, etc.), it's a much more expensive investment on the retailer's end - and 10,000 residents are all well and good, but there needs to be a lot more to convince a major retailer that an investment of that level would pay off. So maybe you should "be the change you want to see"? ;-) Honestly, it really isn't that inconvenient to either Daves (Payne or Ohio City), the West Side Market, and if you really want to go car-free, sign up for CityWheels when they get their vehicle downtown and do your occasional stock-up trips at Steelyard. I think you might need to consider your mentality/approach before you move downtown - I don't mean for that to sound condescending - I had to do the same thing when I gave up my car. It's just that you have re-wire your thinking so you can adapt to living car-free and in the city. Convenience and urban living don't always go hand-in-hand but I wouldn't trade living in the city for anything.
