  2. Welcome indeed! I have a question about House of Cues... they used to have a Luchita's (in or part of the place), but that's no longer the case. I've *heard* they still have Mexican food but I presume it's still decent?

  5. I'll say one thing Hopkins has going for it - the train station is soooo close to where you need to go. Other airports require one h#ll of a schlep (*cough*Midway*cough*) which isn't exactly ideal with an oversized bag full of shopping finds.

    Hmm, most of my friends are understanding, and some are like "wish I could do it, too" so they don't mind picking me up. It doesn't hurt that I offer gas money, or get the first round. Most of them would much rather visit somewhere close to me (Tremont/Downtown/Ohio City) than where they are - they don't like chains and the handful of local spots near them are sort of their "regular" place and they usually want something different. Honestly, they'd usually be heading downtown (or thereabouts) anyway so picking me up is no biggie. On the rare occasions that picking me up (or dropping me off) wasn't an option, a handful of cab rides (within the city) is still cheaper than one month of a car payment Now your point about the weather isn't completely inaccurate, but my social life is one thing that hasn't suffered since I became car-free. I really don't think it's Cleveland that's difficult to be car-free in, it's the outer 'burbs - and that goes without saying for any city.

More like from Lakewood to Cleveland Heights - and aside from a few notable exceptions, why would you want to? It's like I said, you can't just plunk down in some 'burb (or in a few cases, just any neighborhood) and be able to be car-free. You have to do some homework, and clearly Middleburg Heights (what's it in the middle of, btw?) isn't a good set-up.

    I'm impressed - I grew up in Salem and spent many (many) nights downtown at Cedars and other spots back in the day. It's hard for me to imagine being car-free there but kudos to you for pulling it off. I've been car-free in Cleveland for over 5 years. Like you said, given that it's a smaller city you have to do some homework before you choose a neighborhood. I'd say that the most pedestrian/tranit friendly areas of Cleveland are Ohio City, Edgewater/Cudell, Shaker Square, and a few others. It helps that we have a car-sharing service as well, for the times I do need a car.

  17. In all seriousness, the salon owner bought that house when it was condemned in the 80s (70s?). Let's just say that the city (back then) was about as unhelpful as possible to them but they still rehabbed it into a working business. I applaud the fact they turned an eyesore into something good for the area, hopefully they can be incorporated into any new plans. And honey, when you find a stylist who can properly clip your cowlicked-to-death (I have four of the pesky b@stards) hair into submission for $20 a pop, you'll do just about anything to make sure they stay put! :-D

  23. Jerry, there's one thing you can do and as a taxpayer, I completely approve of this particular use of your time ;-) - read Dick Feagler's column today. We all know that he's a washed-up, waxing-about-the-good-ol-days blowhard who wouldn't know a good thing for Cleveland if it bit him on his ample and sagging posterior. He hurls insults from his mighty-white world of Bay and I'm sure the powers that be at the PD love him for it. However, I think it would be great for RTA to develop some sort of campaign that basically says "no, you ignorant dipsh!ts, it's not just about someone hopping on a bus at Severance Hall to grab a nightcap* downtown, it's about...". I'm a designer, not a copywriter - for obvious reasons but you get the idea. *Who the h#ll even says "nightcap" anymore? Do they recline on the Davenport? Oyyy...
  24. jamiec, try either H&M or maybe the young men's dept. at Nordstrom. Both tend to carry trendier (aka slimmer) lines.

    Believe me, I know what the "kooks" are referring to - I was the first renter to ever attend a Holmden-Rowley-Buhrer block club meeting back in 1998 (this ain't my first time in Tremont). I'm well aware of a lot of history and inner workings of neighborhood development corps., their inner workings with local politicos, neighborhood activists, etc. Many of the complaints they have now are the same they had then - some are very legit, but when they can make those complaints *without* the rambling diatribes accompanying EVERY single time, they might actually get some resolution. I wouldn't ever suggest that legit info CAN'T be found on tremonter, just that there might be a lot of sifting to go through to get it :-) Back on topic, peabody's made a great point - a lot of individual landlords in Tremont tend to stick a sign out front and that's it for their advertising. A visit wouldn't take too long to do on a weekend afternoon (and of course give you more familiarity with the lay of the land). As far as direct access to downtown, Ohio City has Tremont beat but that's more of a testament to Ohio City's abundance of transit choices (rail, bus lines, etc.) than Tremont's lack thereof. I will say that I know from experience that Ohio City is a cheaper cab ride ;-)
