Cleveland: Downtown: East 4th Street Developments
Not that I'm familiar with the culinary joys of dog excrement, but I can say that though their food wasn't fantastic, it didn't conjure any connections with doggy poo. I'd rather they improve the food first; even I can tolerate poor font choices every now and then.

Cleveland: Retail News
I'm a Target snob ;-) so I usually go for Target at Steelyard. I won't shop there, but there's Wal-Mart in Steelyard opening this fall. There's a Marc's in Lakewood (plaza at Detroit near Warren) and Ridge Park Square (I-480 @ Ridge). Big Lots on W. 65th south of Clark (skettttchy 'hood), Family Dollar on West 25th at Carroll. Those are the discount joints off the top of my head.

Welllll, as a designer, I have to agree. If they have great food/service, I could give a rat's @ss about the signage but since it looks like they need a litttttle work... bad signage might be the proverbial straw... ;-)

He was also sporting a mullet and poorly-fitted pleated khakis... I'm sorry, I just think if you're going to have a strong opinion on aesthetics, at least LOOK like you understand good aesthetics in the first place!

Cleveland: Downtown: East 4th Street Developments
Patios were full at both Pickwick, Corner Alley and Zocalo; HOB was decent but not jam-packed. It's 80ish and sunny-ish and plenty of people were out and about.

Well I tried the take-out window at Zocalo today; the takeout window is limited to the basics (burritos, enchiladas, etc.). Decent food, portions are about average, it was enough for a bite (enchilada with salsa, chips, rice and beans for $5.99). The entrees listed (dine in only) seem promising.

Cleveland: Random Development and News
It'll be a nice gap filler between 200 Public Square and the 9th Street towers, that's for sure. I think it would actually be a little more to the right, partially blocking the view of Fifth Third Center. The elevator "stump" is on the parking deck's southeast corner, so the tower would be much closer to the National City/Garfield Building.

When one is wearing short-shorts, one should always avoid jumping at anything metal. No, I do NOT speak from personal experience!

Cleveland: Downtown Office Buildings Updates
You're not looking at the whole picture. KJP's not talking about Cleveland specifically - he's talking about principals of mixed-use planning. One of the basics is that a cluster of mixed-use mid-rises do more to improve the pedestrian traffic and vibrancy of an area, than a single supertall building that's strictly an office tower would. For example, look at a photo of Paris where pedestrian traffic is high. There aren't any supertalls in the immediate area here, just a lot of 4-8 story mixed-use buildings: On the other end of the spectrum, this area of downtown Columbus isn't lacking for skyscrapers or parking lots. Like many areas that are surrounded by towers that are only open M-F 9-5, it's lacking pedestrians and vibrancy. Now, as KJP suggests - imagine if the handful of tall buildings were instead a dozen mixed-use mid-rise buildings that created a cohesive urban fabric. It would really behoove you to read posts thoroughly; you would learn so much if you did.

Here's an idea - peabody99 mentioned that it could be a fun time. The $10.00 Rush Hour Cruise on the Goodtime III - starts at 5:30 on Fridays, but they're over after September. http://www.goodtimeiii.com/RushHour.asp

Cleveland: Tyler Village
I'm not saying profits=good art. What I'm saying is just as weepinwillow said - for studio space, it doesn't get much cheaper than Cleveland. I'm not talking about artists' profits, I'm talking about just being able to sustain their craft. Sure, an artist could have more opportunities in NYC, but they'd have a broom closet at three times the price of an average space here; and that they'd share with three other people. Even my friends who are pretty established (in Red Hook) are feeling the pinch; their overhead (biggest chunk being studio rent) is killing them, not to mention you don't just move to NYC and people start handing you commissions. It's taken them years to get where they are and their day jobs were: restaurant host, server, and security guard. If they can do it, so can Cleveland artists ;-) I think 8Shades mentioned there are resources for Cleveland artists to help them get set up with studio space, and just as importantly, a viable approach to getting their work out there. No, art isn't solely about the money (nor has it been nor should it be), but the reality is that bills have to be paid and the bills are a lot lower here than in most cities. Should live/work zoning be more widespread to offer artists affordable space? Absolutely. Should the resources available to artists be given more funding? Absolutely. I think there are legitimate gripes for artists in Cleveland - the price of studio space isn't one of them. Not yet, anyway ;-) So to get back on topic, weepinwillow - can you give us some info about live/work spaces from your perspective as an owner/proprietor? It sounds great to us but then again, we're not the ones trying to market it.

Cleveland-random venting
"My biggest bitch beyond that is the way one woman (I didn't get her name) phrased it. "I've lived her 18 years, and this project and that project have been announced....blah blah blah blah." Reason #8,621 that I'm glad I'm not a native.

"Cleveland in general is EXTREMELY affordable for artists or anybody else... If artists are getting priced out by $2 or $3 a SF, maybe it's time for them to consider the workforce." Amen.

"Those who are pro-Breuer tower, don't ask the county PR guy about it haha. Needless to say he doesn't think too highly of it." Well I don't think too highly of that atrocious salmon-pink shirt he was wearing but you don't see me spending taxpayer money to shred it, do ya?!?

What do you know that you wish you didn't know?
All the things women feel free to share with me simply because I have no sexual interest in them. I mean, I love them dearly but there's something wrong when even I know that the answer is "drink some cranberry juice".

Worst Job
Helping my mom sell antique and collectible books at a booth at the Rogers Sale. What's the Rogers Sale you ask? Imagine Bartertown from Mad Max meets Deliverance, located about 10 miles north of West Virginia... and for many of the attendees, the sale was THE highlight of their week. My mom and I get along great so that wasn't an issue. What WAS an issue: 1. Waking up at 5:30am to drive 30 minutes through backwater hellholes to arrive at the epicenter of backwater hellholes. 2. We'd end up stationed next to toothless hicks selling tube socks or inbred yokels selling whatever junk they dug up. 3. Unlike the lovely Hartville flea market, the "roads"/aisles weren't paved. Gravel/dust covered your feet. 4. Let's see, I'm a city kid having to work in this kind of environment. 5. Did I mention they also sell livestock at this place? So imagine the (literally) unwashed masses, coupled with the stench of animals (and their waste), and produce that was sitting out in the sun all day. 6. Let's see, I'm a prissy city kid having to work in this environment. 7. Quite possibly the filthiest restroom facilities outside of the worst of the worst favelas. Not fun. Not fun at all.
