Urban Ohio LOGO Design Contest!
Just for the record, I had nothing to do with that logo: This was the logo I created:

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
^I believe someone mentioned that (aside from grandfathered in facilities like Kansas City) federal regulations forbid construction of public facilities over working freight rail lines. My first preference would be the current site but that's only because of the expansion possibility over the tracks. Without that expansion, I'm less inclined to support the current site. I do worry about how a center would be wedged into Tower City - it's not just the facility but the 20+ loading docks, the truck traffic, etc.

Urban Ohio LOGO Design Contest!
I don't think this needs to be continued in PM. The reason I haven't commented about your concept is because I'm waiting to see what else people have to offer. I mentioned cle2032's because I was genuinely impressed and more importantly, thought he had a good grasp on what's needed. You didn't offend me by suggesting that the logo be changed, though your approach was a bit rude. We've already discussed that issue privately and believe me I've moved past it (otherwise I would have told you to sod off and I certainly wouldn't have allowed a contest on the forum to create a new logo). I'm glad you did, because we've been able to get more people involved and have a sense of ownership for the forum. It's nice to see so many people interested, even if they aren't submitting concepts. Quite honestly, what I'm sick of (and this isn't reflective of my opinion of you, but it applies to this specific situation) of designers who deride others' work, but when it comes to what they've actually produced - either we don't see anything, or what we do see isn't much better than what they've derided. What really irks me is when presented with criticism of their work, they react with hypersensitivity. You called the current logo "boring and uninspired" which I admit it is, but on the same token, I can't bust your chops about your concept? Don't get me wrong, the cornhusk concept is an interesting angle and I could see how it might work, given some adjustments. Frankly, I felt the execution was a little lacking with the skyscraper being a bit too syringe-like (the stroke needs to be bumped up overall), the husk being hard to identify, and I'm not a fan of the font (though that's a personal preference, not a design comment). Now, what I've offered is constructive criticism that you can take and maybe refine your concept - I didn't say it was "boring"; I didn't say it was "uninspired"; I didn't say it was stupid or anything of the sort. Am I making sense?

Do you REALLY want an explanation of the gay "Bear" subculture? Do you want to know why I'm considered an otter? I'll give you all the detail you want! ;-)

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
I don't discount that someone was the victim of a crime - I never have, never will, and my heart goes out to them. I donated to the fund of the family on West 12th who were displaced by arson so step down from the pulpit. I'm not suggesting that people are posting at tremonter.com to post false information. However, you're kidding yourself if you think that there aren't people trolling an unregulated messageboard who have some personal beef to pick with their councilperson, CDC or what have you. What I'm saying is that you have a completely open board with little moderation, and people - whatever their state or agenda - are free to post anything about anything. The problem with that is that (obviously) some people take anything they see on a board like tremonter.com and think it's gospel. Is there a problem in the vicinity of Thurman? Obviously there is, and it needs attention and no one here has suggested otherwise. Is Tremont the death-spiralling-hellhole you describe? If you really think it's that bad, and your financial status (btw, dropping your income like that is kinda gauche) allows you the opportunity to move - why don't you? I'm not saying "if you don't like it, leave". I'm saying "you obviously don't like it; if I felt the same way you do, I'd leave too."

The end of an era for Akron: Goodbye Quaker Square
That one hits home... damn that's sad. I remember when I was 7 years old (this was 1979) and my parents took me to Quaker Square, when all four (five?) floors of the shopping complex were occupied and the whole place was bustling. They had everything from trendy boutiques to Asian imports to a coffee roaster (which was absolutely unheard of at the time). For a kid from small-town Appalachia, Quaker Square in its heyday was magical. That people would prefer to shop in the auto-riffic clusterf#ck of Fairlawn/Montrose at the expense of a place like Quaker Square is one of those things that makes me have little faith in the human race. Sorry - this is a sore spot for me.

If there's an announcement for a tower on the Jacobs site, I'm gonna need about three months for liver prep for the boozefest celebration :drunk:

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
I'm not sure if the discussions are interesting - potentially libelous, absolutely. The problem is that with Tremonter - the intentions are good but there's very little moderation, and anyone can make anonymous comments. I noticed how the people complaining tend to have a serious bias against TWDC and Cimperman - I'm not suggesting either are perfect, but I question what the complainers have done to help and of course, what their ulterior motives are. As far as an uptick of serious crimes - I've only heard of a few incidents around Thurman, and the connection is that they happened around 2:30am.

Funny picture-taking stories?
It was most certainly because of the water plant. The only time I've ever been questioned was a few years ago. I was taking photos around East 3rd and Superior, when a motorcycle cop (an extraordinarily handsome one at that) pulled up, motioned me over and asked what I was doing. I said "just taking photos of buildings for my site, clevelandskyscrapers.com" - he said, "no problem, someone called in to say there was a 'dark-complected person taking photos of buildings', so we had to check it out. You know how people are...". I chuckled and said "I'm dark complected but I'm Irish and German!", he laughed and said "Me too, take it easy." So no big whoop.

"We'll look like a mini-Dubai." I don't know about that, but I'd say it'd be cause for a boozefest celebration!

Alright, it's official - we gotta crane! :-D "God help all of us if 515 or something of that 'height' has the go ahead" Let's see... 515 Euclid, some of the taller proposals from Stark, and how about a nice hotel for our Med Mart/Convention Center - all at once? :-D
