  1. Sorry to quote Scooby-Doo, but "Arrf?!?" :?
  2. I remember when they first opened across the street - it was just them and Art Attack as far as storefronts worth mentioning (this was before the West 25th rehab).
  3. "Anyone else having a hard time fining the webcam link? It's "Live Construction Pictures" (left side on the home page): http://www.theavenuedistrict.com/newlayout/webcam.asp
  4. Yep - looks like they're consolidating operations to the Coventry location. When they announced the store opening on Coventry, I really had to question the ability to maintain two stores - they have great inventory but their price point is pretty low, and I'd imagine rent isn't cheap at either location. Not to mention, Coventry is busier as far as a round-the-clock schedule, whereas the Ohio City location probably hurts for traffic on days that the West Side Market isn't open (yet another reason it should be open more frequently).
  5. Look at what you made me go and do!
  6. "Regardless, it’s still troubling to see the existing convention center sitting idle." Idle, no. Underused? Absolutely, and I know it's splitting hairs but in October the Ohio Optometric Association will have 800 attendees, and the American Chemical Society's Rubber Division will have 10,000.* It's not the greatest facility but it does get some use, just not as much as it could. *Or did you mean, it would be troubling to see the existing center idle AFTER a Tower City center is built? Your suggestion of relocating the Crawford Museum would be fantastic for that spot - I'd still prefer an expanded/improved center in the current site but if it has to be re-used, the museum would be a good fit, imho.
  7. Oh alright, twist my arm! ;-)
  8. Cool, am I relieved of my photography duties from the One Cleveland Center garage? :-D Thanks for the update - looking good!
  9. "Over the past year DCA has hired a social worker, gotten seven people off downtown streets into supportive housing, worked with all downtown stakeholders to create a 24 hour drop in center, and gotten a "homeless bus" that will provide transportation to all homeless people to wherever the services are." THAT needs to be a letter to the editor.
  10. "thats the westside 'burbs for you! Um, Legacy Village?
  11. "What I most object to is the notion that we should just pretend they do not exist. That won't change their lives, but it will change us as fellow human beings." So Connie, giving them spare change is going to change their lives and turn us all into Mother Theresa? Give me a break - she's still acting as though the DCA is saying "don't help the homeless at all".

"I think we may need some UO sunshine laws." I think that idea can be stuck where the sun doesn't shine :-D
  13. "people really hate me on here for wanting positive things to happen and asking for more."
  14. "its a matter of getting it built, which this city doesnt move forward to do." When you have a comprehensive understanding of what the city does to spur development, financially or otherwise - let us know.
  15. By far, my favorite festival in Cleveland is the City Xpressionz urban/aerosol art festival produced by Cleveland Public Art. Held across from the West Side Market, it's truly a festival that draws everyone of every background - the artists are incredibly talented, the breakdancers are nothing short of amazing; the music is awesome... Anyway, here are 50-some photos I took along with three movies showing some moments of the event: Breakdancers: [youtube=425,350]iaiUFt6Zo9M Students from the Progressive Arts Alliance: [youtube=425,350]uRuGujtKils Student DJ scratching: [youtube=425,350]XMj6ywJ2XbI Mona Lisa in aerosol - who'da thunk? Scion is a major sponsor; they brought in some customized vehicles this year: Q Nice is the MC - keeping the event going by announcing what's next: Students from the Progressive Arts Alliance performed early in the day: An artist flips through his sketchbook to get ideas: The clouds looked pretty threatening, but the rain held off for a few hours: DJ Onit: The breakdancers offered a sample to get the crowd going: I absolutely love the gal's style on the right: This MC was really good: One of the artist's jackets: If this isn't a candidate for a funny caption contest, I don't know what is! Unfortunately, the rain came down... And the crowd and dancers tried to hang in there but it eventually poured buckets... and that was the end of my day. Hope you enjoyed!

What other kind of buzz is there? :-D
  17. Well if it ends up at Tower City, hopefully they can build on the "hole" at Superior/West 6th/Prospect. That would be a nice spot for a hotel - connected to the rest of Tower City and across the street from Stark's project. I agree with David Ellison - the petition drive raised awareness and hopefully reasonable scrutiny will keep things in check. Still, I have to throw one more celebratory song into the mix - be aware, it's very very gay ;-) [youtube=425,350]fHF7xH_2SII

I hate it when people kill my buzz, but yeah - well-worded opinions rarely get people on my sh!tlist :-)
  19. From cleveland.com Effort to push back Cuyahoga County sales tax fails Posted by Sarah Hollander August 25, 2007 16:11PM Categories: Breaking News A challenge to raising Cuyahoga County's sales tax has failed. A group collecting signatures announced at 4 today it did not reach its goal. More from cleveland.com http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2007/08/effort_to_push_back_cuyahoga_c.html
  20. "It's just that, based on her reaction, I just want to make sure that our emotions don't get the better of us when communicating our thoughts to these people." I don't think my email was really that harsh - heavy-handed maybe, but if my tone is enough to ruffle her feathers, she needs to get out of the kitchen, so to speak. She's a senator's wife and a Pulitzer'd columnist for the Plain Dealer - as if she hasn't dealt with worse  Anyone who knows me knows that my email was relatively tame and it's not like I insulted her directly. She's free to let her emotions get the better of her in print, and her words are viewed by hundreds of thousands in the region and taken as gospel by many. She needs to be held to a higher standard, and being meek about calling her out on an ignorant article is not the way to go. Being sheepish because she's just a little sensitive at someone confronting her views is not my cup of tea. She insulted the work of not only the DCA, but that of Trinity Cathedral, the Catholic Diocese and the Old Stone Church - that's shameful for a senator's wife who lives in Avon to do. She doesn't walk out the door every night to pick up groceries and get panhandled, yet her bleeding heart mentality says it's fine for those who choose to live downtown to have to deal with that. She takes one anecdotal story about some sad case from her past, and thinks it's reason enough to waste ink and piss all over the DCA's efforts. She completely ignores the DCA's efforts to create a fund to provide additional help. Now tell me, who is the one who needs to get a grip?

Horsesh!t. You didn't say "the obnoxious black teens who fight/etc.", you lumped them all together. Take a week to re-examine how you should address these things in the future. Folks, I don't have a problem when forumers relate something they've experienced (i.e. abusive/obnoxious behavior) and keep their criticisms focused on those specific individuals, but by all that I hold holy, there will not be those kinds of racist generalizations on my watch.
  22. A brief clip from cleveland.com's multimedia division about the Cleveland Museum of Art. I didn't know they were restoring some of the original gallery spaces along with the expansion: http://www.cleveland.com/news/pdvideo/flash/index.ssf?081607_artmuseum_video
  23. I'm just perplexed that she took my email so harshly - I'm well aware that I'm about as subtle as a hand grenade, but given her position I would imagine (imagine, not hope) she's received far nastier correspondence. I love how she completely glosses over most of the points I made, particularly the panhandler vs. homeless comment, and instead tries to establish her "street cred" along with a bleeding-heart diatribe. "Won't someone think of the panhandlers!?!"
  24. I'm a GEEK, not a nerd! There's a difference! :-D From August 24th:
  25. Well Connie at least replied... more than Feagler can say: Shawn, your tone and tenor undermine your efforts to convince me of anything other than your own ill temper. I drive to downtown Cleveland all week long, and spend most of my waking hours here, working in and walking around downtown Cleveland. Where I live has nothing to do with my views of how we should treat our fellow human beings, and I have grown weary of civic boosters who condemn any criticism of so-called downtown development as just another attempt to undermine the city and "batter" them. How we treat those we are allowed to mistreat is a measure of who we are as individuals, and as a community. Demonizing panhandlers may make some feel better about ignoring all who beg, but it doesn't do a thing to help those who need it. As for The Plain Dealer's willingness to contribute to the homeless fund: I can't speak for management, but many of my colleagues are among the most generous people I know when it comes to contributing time, talent and funds to charitable causes. There are lots of good people here, and most of them care a great deal about the state of this city. It's not exposing the flaws, but ignoring them, that hurts this great town. Connie Schultz
