Cleveland: Downtown Cleveland Alliance News & Discussion
Well, I probably won't ever work for the Plain Dealer and I may not eat lunch again in this town, but this felt good to write: ...................... Connie, you have completely missed the point of the Downtown Cleveland Alliance's campaign of "Don't Give Where it Can't Help". In no way, shape or form are the Downtown Cleveland Alliance suggesting that the homeless don't (or won't, or shouldn't) exist. They're trying to get the message out that most of the panhandlers (particularly the aggressive panhandlers) *aren't* homeless. The DCA is trying to get people to contribute funds to groups that can genuinely help the homeless. I'm sure that the churches and service groups who are collaborating with the DCA really appreciate you denigrating their work. I'm also sure that unlike people who live in the suburban comfort of Avon, several thousand residents of downtown Cleveland wouldn't be so ignorant as to pass judgement on an issue that seriously affects their quality of life and their safety. Do you get panhandled in front of your home? Probably not, so why aren't the residents of downtown Cleveland entitled to that as well? I would think a Pulitzer prize winning journalist could understand the difference between the homeless (less fortunate and truly deserving of our assistance) and panhandlers, who are often scamming, occasionally threatening, and rarely are they truly in need. Homeless - deserving of our charity. Panhandlers - usually not. Like so many of your colleagues at the Plain Dealer - you've once again spit on the efforts of a group trying to make downtown Cleveland a better place. What's in the water at Superior and 18th? Any time an article appears about downtown improvement or development, it often references "the poorest city in the nation" or offers up some non-related insult to the region. Plain Dealer subscriptions have plummeted over the years, and I imagine your higher-ups wonder why revenue is down. Perhaps if you and the other staff writers could learn to appreciate where you are and stop battering those of us who are trying to make this a better city, that wouldn't be the case. And with that extra money, perhaps the Plain Dealer could make a sizable donation to the Downtown Homeless Fund. Regards, Shawn Hoefler

You're welcome! No idea of the "build it and they will come" but hopefully we'll hear something eventually :-)

Northeast Ohio: Regionalism News & Discussion
Keep us posted - I feel for you, since you're reverse commuting but unlike places like Independence, there's really no direct/easy route there. Your situation (working in an outer 'burb) is why I hate to hear when a company decides to locate out in the sticks - it makes it difficult for workers to be car-free. I'm pretty sure the PD had a good article about the dangers of companies being inaccessible to inner-city residents.

What I saw was two easels with renderings - one of which I could see from the car (god I feel soooo paparazzi!) Yes, the red buildings would be over by West 9th and St. Clair and seem to be more in line with typical Warehouse District heights. The blue buildings are Phase 1; If by the original massing you mean: Then no, the rendering I saw today is showing substantially larger buildings for Phase 1 :-)

Welllll, as I was heading into work, we were stopped on St. Clair at West 3rd. I happened to glance over (and fortunately my camera powered up in time): I photoshopped it a little bit to help delineate the massings (sorry about the parking meters, I was in a car about 20 feet away): Original photo:

"I really hope your not talking about the Fox's Den. My wife probably won't let me come to that one." Not that he'd have ANYthing to worry about, but I doubt my partner would let me come to that one, either! It was a good time: X, LittleItalyCleveland, cle2032, the pope, gotribe, musky and I were there. Next time, I'll remember to take a few photos, but I like the idea of monthly meets to support our local brewing industry! :drunk:

Living Car Free
No, I just take the Rapid or bus to the lot - and I've only used it on rare occasion but I'm glad it's an option.

"Okay, so 3 years ago I thought I wanted to live in Lakewood. 2 years ago I thought I wanted to live downtown. 1 year ago I thought I wanted to live in Ohio City. The past few months I thought I wanted to live Tremont. Today I feel like moving to Detroit-Shoreway." Ugh... trendinista! ;-)

Welcome to the forum, and congrats on your new digs! That's interesting that they're reserving some for rental - they did that with the Towers portion but I'm pretty sure they ended up offering them all for sale eventually (anyone, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong).

Northeast Ohio: Regionalism News & Discussion
shs, I think you have a disconnect - the funding that could enhance/repair the city's infrastructure is the funding that helped places like Twinsburg get developed in their unsustainable auto-centric manner and continues to help exacerbate sprawl and increase traffic. And no one is making digs - we're pointing out the fact that recent history shows that the exurbs have prospered at the expense of the center of the region. Again, as KJP has said - every new home or retail space that opens in exurbia is at the expense of something already built in an established neighborhood. "And where are you driving that you think we don't have traffic?" I don't drive. I've been happily car-free for over 5 years, and I didn't have to go to NYC to realize the benefits. I realized that to reduce congestion and my stress, I need to be the change I wanted to see. I chose to move to an area that's served well by transit and made the minor adjustments in my life to make that transition easier. *edit* I realize my situation (working downtown, no need to leave the office during the day) doesn't apply to everyone but believe me, there are thousands of people with similar circumstances who could easily go car-free (and save a sh!tload of money) but they think that using transit only really works in places like NYC, Chicago, or Europe. No, RTA isn't perfect and for the times I do need a car, I use CityWheels but living car-free is more realistic than you'd be inclined to think. There are alternative routes - we call them surface streets, but they happen to go through residential areas. Sorry that it's an inconvenience for your speedy driving, but I live on one of those "major roadways". Thanks to "improvements" that make it easier for cars to go faster down my street, I ended up with some yoho on my front lawn this morning. His tire tracks went right through the spot where a dozen neighborhood kids wait for a bus - thankfully they'd already been picked up. So because someone from a southwestern exurb decided to use MY street as a shortcut to congestion on the Innerbelt, my safety and the safety of my neighbors was put at risk. Sorry to break it to you, but people live on Van Aken/Shaker/Buckeye and I think it's a sad statement when we place a higher value on a few minutes travel time than we do on the safety of others. "If I want to go from Highland Hills to downtown and not get on 480 or 77,"

"You guys should really find more pictures of Indianapolis, the ones you have barely show the historical character of the city." Tell Nancy to buy one of musky's cameras and take the god d@mned pics themselves! Excuse us for not quitting our jobs to get photos for ya, princess!

^That and it's probably three times the size of the administration building. The word 'leviathan' comes to mind.- Urban Ohio LOGO Design Contest!
I think the corn is overscaled in comparison to the building - I'm seeing a building being attacked by a mutant cornhusk, not a building emerging from an agricultural past.- Cleveland: VA Hospital Expansion
Overall, blah, blech, and bland - and looky, a worthless setback (aka strip of grass)! To their credit they're keeping some of the elements from the dilapidated apartment buildings and incorporating them into the design. Okay, I'll say something else positive - there will be great photo vantage points from the top of that nine-story parking garage.- Cleveland: Marketing the City
This is a video produced for the Intercontinental Hotel - I thought they did a pretty good job overall. They did mix up the Russian Orthodox church with the Greek Orthodox church, but that's pretty minor. http://www.intercontinentalvideo.com/?showID=306757 - Cleveland: VA Hospital Expansion
