  1. From cleveland.com's "Tip Off" section: Those who clean up after pets in downtown Cleveland to get help Monday, July 16, 2007 Michael K. McIntyre Plain Dealer Columnist With more people, and their pets, living down town, pedestrians have to watch their step walking in the Warehouse and Gateway districts. The Downtown Cleveland Alliance, which employs about 60 full-time "ambassadors" to keep downtown clean, reports it has cleaned up 736 doggie deposits since April 21. That's a lot of careless dog owners. More at cleveland.com http://www.cleveland.com
  2. It's southwest of the Carter Road bridge. And yes, the Strip District is west, to the left of the Rapid bridge (along Fall Street):

How does someone look a potential buyer in the eye and keep a straight face while saying "maintenance fees are $1,751."?!?
  5. Actually, you can see the site here as well - the parking lot in the center foreground:

"$200 million CitiView Center, a mega-complex" Oh good lord... and Boardman is many things, but charming and being known for farming is not one of them - it's a sprawleriffic edge city, with Route 224 as its autocentric clusterf#ck of a main artery. What idiots write this sh!t?
  7. I removed the off-topic posts, those involved who wish to continue that discussion can do so via PM.

  9. The only other time I've seen a rat downtown was on Mall B, back when they had that really tall "grass" growing in the planters. It scurried from one side to the other. I'll take muffleheads any day over NYC-sized rats!
  10. Some possible reasons: 1. The site isn't completely flat. There's a slight grade from St. Clair to Lakeside which wouldn't be the easiest thing to re-engineer. 2. Unlike a swimming pool, the water was constantly being pumped in and out. 3. The site is substantially larger than a swimming pool typical in a residential tower.
  11. It's currently just a big patch of grass - until about a year ago, there was a project by Cleveland Public Art occupying the site. The same artist who designed the Irish Hunger Memorial in NYC designed a series of 8 "urns" that were modeled from the windflow off Lake Erie. They were meant to be a temporary installation (for 2 years):
  12. They leaked into the convention center below. "You guys do notice that old "engineers" buliding, which is where Society Tower/Marriot now stand." The Engineers Building only took up the Marriott parcel - I also noticed the parking lot that Key Tower filled :-)
  13. When we "fill up" downtown, Tremont and Ohio City, give me a call. Don't get me wrong, I truly hope that's a concern we have to deal with that in my lifetime, but that's a lot of area you're talking about. I frankly don't think we'll be flooded with McMansions anytime soon. Let's see - a rubble-strewn lot left over from the race riots, or this...
  14. I just read this article in the Free Times: http://www.freetimes.com/stories/15/10/pedal-pushers *EDIT* Looks like you'll have to call the writer (Mike Gill) at 216/479-2033 to get their contact info. :|

I live in the Tremont neighborhood with my partner (so the kid issue isn't an issue with us), and aside from the newest of the new townhomes, just about everything worth mentioning is under $400K. Here's an example of the newer homes in the area, priced at $320K: http://www.progressiveurban.com/cgi-bin/search.cgi?view_details.x=1&mls=2392385&current_page=1&OfficeName=Progressive+Urban+Real+Estate&searchtype=Search_PURE_Listings&listcount=&sort=&resolution=&featured=1 And one under $250K: http://www.progressiveurban.com/cgi-bin/search.cgi?view_details.x=1&mls=2384144&current_page=8&OfficeName=Progressive+Urban+Real+Estate&searchtype=Search_PURE_Listings&listcount=&sort=&resolution= Let us know when you'll be visiting and we can recommend an itinerary of places to hit (bars, restaurants, etc.). As far as jobs, the finance sector is pretty healthy in the city (KeyBank, National City Bank and AmTrust are HQ'd here; Charter One (a RBS bank) has their regional HQ here, and we have one of the twelve Federal Reserve Banks here; there are some brokerage firms as well, but I'll have to get back with you on that. The retail/apparel sector in the city is improving, but depending on what we're talking about, your wife might have to work in the 'burbs until some of the proposed projects come online.
  16. This goes under the "you learn something every day..." file. I called the DCA Ambassadors to request a cleanup in front of the Rockwell Building - specifically, a dead rat (oddly enough, I haven't seen too many rats in Cleveland, hmm). Apparently they're forbidden from touching dead animals (which is fine and I don't blame them), and they did have a request to the city's Animal Control dept. So before anyone posts about how the DCA hasn't cleaned up a dead rat on the sidewalk, well - they've done everything they can. Now, if the rat is still there after work, Animal Control is getting a call. :-P
  17. "i can't select one of these, nor can I add a picture of my own to use as my avatar" 1. Right-click and save the avatar of your choice to your desktop. 2. Up near the top of the page, click "PROFILE". 3. Once in the Profile section, click "Forum Profile Information" on the left. 4. In the section called "Personalized Picture", click "I will upload my own picture" and follow the prompts. 5. Once you see the new avatar, click "Change Profile". Let us know if that doesn't work.
  18. I'm not saying that ECP hasn't affected them at all, but I have to agree with X. The people who want to belong to some sort of exclusive business/fitness "country club in the city" so they can hobnob are probably going to go to the Union Club or the Club at Key Center. The people who simply want a decent place to work out probably wouldn't be willing to fork out the kind of money that CAC wants. They're caught in the middle of a business that's somewhat polarized.
  19. How bored are you that you're checking out this thread?!? :-D

Welcome to the forum. To be honest, those concerns are legitimate but as with anything in life - it's relative to your situation. As MyTwoSense said - healthcare, finance, and the legal field are pretty healthy. Some fields could use improvement, but that can be said about a lot of areas. To give you my perspective - I've worked as a graphic designer in Cleveland for over 13 years; Cleveland doesn't have a reputation for being a hotbed for design jobs but I've managed to stay in the field this long with progressively better positions. If you can give us more information about the type of work you and your wife are in, we might be able to point you in the right direction. The housing market is by no means robust, but you'll find that (as with anything) it's location, location, location. For example, ten years ago a small worker's cottage in the heart of the Tremont neighborhood (currently one of the healthier up-and-coming areas) would sell for less than $30,000. They now sell for over $100K, and are usually on the same block as $400K townhomes. Conversely, you have areas that are diplomatically described as "distressed". If you're looking to do a HGTV "flip" and reap $250K profit (a la California), you'll be disappointed. But, there are plenty of decent homes of just about any variety that are affordable and many in areas where values are stable and/or modestly increasing. As MyTwoSense said, the schools aren't the best (though better than in the past) but there are inner-ring suburbs that offer proximity to the city amenities, a urban "vibe" and built environment, and good schools. If you'd like to see an overview of some of the major projects underway in Cleveland, visit this thread I created at the skyscraperpage.com forum: http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=97396
  21. Two new avatars for Cleveland, and one for Akron!
  22. math, having heard Davis blather on and on over the years, I truly believe he means just that, and that providing shelters isn't enough. Apparently there are those in the homeless population who (for whatever reasons) prefer not to live in shelters - i.e. some don't like the restrictions placed on them, etc. Davis would suggest that it's my (and every other residents') obligation to provide for those who are "out of the loop". I would suggest that his Grapevine vendor at Lincoln Park clean up after his dog, but that's probably too harsh and oppressive of a request  I agree with blinker12 - I would never suggest that they be arbitrarily banned from sleeping outdoors, but there are other (probably better) places for them to set up camp.
  23. ""... unless you come up with a strategy for people who don't like shelters," Davis said." Sorry, bleedyheart - that's where I draw the f#cking line. I donate money to shelters so that the homeless have an option other than the street - the shelters need all the help they can get, and they aren't perfect. But I will be d@mned if I'm obligated to find yet ANOTHER alternative for someone who "doesn't like shelters".
