considering move to Cleveland, concerns about public transit and foot traffic
From what I understand, the sewage issues have been remedied - not completely but a great improvement. If you remember seeing barges with cranes out on the Lake just east of Edgewater beach a few years ago - they were building onto the pipeline that serves as the conduit for overflow water (and sewage). By extending it further out into the Lake, the sewage gets dragged out by the current (and eventually breaks down in the water) rather than back toward land. Keep in mind they also post bacteria level warning signs so people don't put themselves at risk - there was a time when that stuff wasn't even monitored! (ick!!!) Just so people don't get the wrong idea, the sewage is only a concern after a heavy rainfall when the main lines are overwhelmed. Unfortunately, it has to go somewhere and if the main lines are used up with rainwater, it ends up in the Lake. Furthermore, this is not a phenomenon unique to Cleveland's beaches. But to get back on topic - Justine, I absolutely agree with peabody99, check out Wendy Park as well as the Goodtime III cruises. :-)

Columbus: Arts News & Discussion
8Shades, that's exactly the type of support system that's needed, whether it's in Cleveland or any city for that matter. I'm absolutely in favor of public funds that are earmarked for the arts going to the support systems you've described (biz training, health insurance, etc.). Sort of the "helping people help themselves" kind of approach. Thanks to that kind of program, I think the mentality of artists that jamiec described ("I should just be given a blank check") will fade. So to get back on topic - does Columbus have a similar program?

Columbus: Arts News & Discussion
"I'm slightly frustrated by many arts folks' supposition that it's the public's fault they have never have any money ... they always said they wished the community supported them more." Much of that stems from the university level, where people get instruction on creating their work but not how to market it, or how to develop basic business savvy. It's like you said, they create works that might be groundbreaking and inspired, but unless someone buys it - they aren't going to be able to pay their bills. Artists who do well usually offer works at a variety of price points so their work appeals to a broader audience. The more successful artists are also more tuned in to things like how to apply for grants, what funds are available. Regarding Columbus' status as having the best arts scene - I won't argue that the Short North is indeed one of the premier arts 'hoods in the State. However, as 8Shades said - the Cleveland gallery scene is less concentrated and spread over several neighborhoods, which has its ups and downs.

Cleveland: Stonebridge Phase 5
Folks, it's one thing to reference a newspaper in a thread but can we please save those posts for the UrbanBar? This discussion has sprouted up in too many threads to count and we need to keep things tidy and on topic. Thanks! :-)

" In the neighborhoods, this is obviously very hard... However, when these guys step foot into the WHD" 1. The Warehouse District *is* a neighborhood. 2. No idea about the perp, but the victims in the shooting outside of Spy were from Twinsburg and Warrensville Heights.- Cleveland: Bob Stark Warehouse District Project
I scoped out the building as well - I saw a skyline shot on the wall in their conference room facing St. Clair. It wasn't altered in any way, shape or form - it was an aerial view from the west, but there was nothing superimposed on it. I also saw two easels - one I couldn't see, the other had the same "conceptual" rendering we've seen all along. So where was this alleged new rendering? :-)- Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion

" If he feeds into the publics want for immediate information - it could come back to bite him in the ass." So could his silence and perceived disinterest and lack of concern. Oh that's right, when he was campaigning he made mention of his relatives who have had run-ins with the law - that was in response to his plans for fighting crime. No one is saying he needs to Mike White and breathe down the CPD's neck, but he was elected to be a figurehead and his hands-off approach is not serving him well in these situations. He may not be able to solve the city's crime problems himself, but he sure as sh!t can influence the morale of his bosses - the residents of Cleveland.- Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
Spy has basically taken over the reins from Moda - a once-upscale club starts to fade, so they loosen the dress codes, lower the cover prices, and problems start. And I know that it might be taboo to suggest it, but the connection between the hip-hop/rap nights and the violence is hardly an isolated coincidence. It's sad, back in the mid 90s when I went to places on West 6th on any kind of regular basis, Spy was by far the most upscale joint in Cleveland and you didn't get in if you were wearing jeans. The worst fight I saw was someone yelling at a bouncer for not letting him in - for wearing stereotypical "thug" clothing. Go figure. jamiec, nuisance clubs and violence are hardly "only in Cleveland".- The Dating Thread
"the most obvious clue was he didn't get why the women in Sex in City like shoes so much. dead give way that he is strait" Au contraire - that's what is widely known as "protesting too much". A straight guy wouldn't even bring that up in the first place.- Cleveland: Downtown: The Avenue District
