  1. peabody... he was one of the grand marshals for Cleveland's Pride parade in 2004 so he might not be quite as off-base as you'd initially think. But I hear you - realizing that you agree on some of the same things as a crotchety old Bay Village guy? Yeah - that's rather sobering
  2. No, you don't - unless you plan to move the tech companies out of there, who happen to give the building (the Sterling Building, named after the former department store) an occupancy rate over 90%. Don't get me wrong - it ain't pretty, but it has a lot of tech upgrades that are verrrry attractive to the companies that have moved there (and quite a few were transplanted from the 'burbs).

According to a listing in this month's Properties Magazine (www.propertiesmag.com), a 75K sq. ft. Dick's Sporting Goods will be part of Phase II (the northernwestern section) of Steelyard Commons - construction possibly beginning in 2008.
  4. It seems like a cool combination of the Chase Tower in Dallas http://skyscraperpage.com/diagrams/?b120 and the Hearst Tower in Charlotte http://skyscraperpage.com/cities/?buildingID=168. God, the flashbacks from Taylor Hall!
  5. When people suggest that Coventry has declined, they're usually lamenting the loss of its "edge", aka Coventry sold out its moniker as a place for freaks. In other words, the weirdos, freaks, punks, etc. had to go out and get jobs - while they were doing that, sports bars and more mainstream stores opened and the large swath of sidewalk (aka the hangout) near what is now Coventryard (aka Caribou, BDs Barbecue) was lost for "progress".

Yes, you can take the Red Line from Tower City Center to the West 25th/Ohio City station which is catty-corner to the West Side Market. In fact, if you're visiting the Market on a Saturday, it will be very, very busy so taking the Rapid is preferable than trying to find a parking spot. Go to Tower City Center (aka the Terminal Tower entrance off Public Square) and you'll pass Caribou Coffee and see the RTA signs - the station is at the bottom level. Go to the WESTBOUND/Airport Red Line Station, go to the vending machines, pay $3.50 for an all-day pass. Go to the gates for the Red Line - preferably close to the attendant booth because if you need a demonstration on how to use the pass, you don't want them yelling ;-) Once inside the gates and doors, veer to the right where you'll see the Airport/Westbound trains - hop on, and be ready to hop right off since it's the first stop after Tower City Center. Once at the West 25th station, take the steps (or elevator) up - exit and you'll see the Market catty-corner. To get back downtown, just go back to the station - pay at the attendant booth. If there's no attendant, you'll need to pay on the train. Everyone is giving good tips for cabs - another area where I see cabs line up is Market Square near the West Side Market/Great Lakes Brewing. Some bartenders don't mind calling a cab for you (just be sure to tip). If you're planning to stay downtown for the bars, East 4th is adjacent to your hotel (aka stumbling distance from the following: Kevin's Martini Bar on the bottom level Pickwick and Frolick, Flannerys Irish Pub, Corner Alley bowling, Boneyard on Prospect, and Winking Lizard on Prospect). The Warehouse District is a little more of a hike but still do-able - I'd walk south from the Arcade past Key Tower to St. Clair, then walk west on St. Clair which will take you to the Warehouse District. Let us know if you need any more info. :-)
  7. Romona, Angie - they're all well and good but there is only one Diva of Cleveland News - Wilma Smith. You do not miss Wilma when she enters a room but she's also a very genuinely nice person. She doesn't say "hope you have a nice evening", she *orders* you to do it! "Do make it a good evening" Thank you, please be seated.
  8. That end of the building would have some great panoramic views of both the Lake and downtown (given the location) so I'm guessing that's the rationale behind the bloated turret. It's not the worst I've seen, but...

I absolutely support and respect the sentiments behind this, and the memories of fallen firefighters. However, that memorial is even harder on the eyes than that cancer survivor memorial in University Circle.
  10. Welll, I'm biased because my partner is in both of those pics - but thank you guys ;-)
  11. Heading out through Tremont: Almost there... Time to hoof it to the festival: Kids in the skate park behind the Rock Hall: Various modes of transportation: And inside the gates: I've been spotted! The lesbian/puppy contingent: Pierogies - what else are you gonna eat in Cleveland? ;-) A lot of rhinestones and sequins over this way: Whippet good! The William G. Mather showing support: Lighthouses: Tourists at the Science Center: Gay boats: Looking south on East 9th Street: Interesting... Time to head to the event tent: The group, Nemsis Rising performs: In recent years, the "family" crowd has staked out this spot: But it's been a long day, and the sun has taken its toll, so time to head out: Shiny happy Key Tower: Hope you enjoyed!
  12. From cleveland.com Downtown Cleveland to get new hotel Posted by Henry J. Gomez June 15, 2007 14:20PM After a decade of scrapped plans and false starts, a hotel finally could open in an abandoned downtown Cleveland office building. Staybridge Suites, part of the InterContinental Hotels Group, plans to refashion historic property along Rockwell Avenue, between East Sixth and East Ninth Streets, into 126 suites. Developers have been eyeballing the land for condos or a hotel since the late 1990s. More at cleveland.com http://www.cleveland.com

Visited Columbus for a friend's birthday party this week. As with all trips to Columbus, it all started with a two-hour zombie drive through the most mind-numbing boring countryside that is Medina, Wayne, Ashland, Richland, Morrow and Delaware counties (aka flyover country of Ohio): But look, world class signage! Downtown Columbus in the distance: Kind of gappy from this angle: But much better in this shot: Finally we get to stretch our legs in the 'hood: Nice older buildings around the area: Never mind that, it's time to check out the rooftop deck! :-) What the heck, it's LeVeque! But it was time to go to the birthday party - on the way, outside the Columbus Art Museum: Cool metalwork on these church doors: Not sure what this building is, but I like it! Nice balconies up there: AEP in the daytime: We could use a few of these in Cleveland: Managed to get a nice rear-view mirror shot: AEP at night: Once back, I make a beeline for the rooftop deck: Yep, that's what I was hoping to see :-) Franklin County Courthouse: Franklin County Courthouse, again: Capitol Square and the Vern Riffe tower: Huntington HQ Oh heck, it's LeVeque! Oh toads, it's Rhodes! Weeeeeee! :-D One Nation! Miranova! This building is just weird: Heading north on I-71: Construction in sprawlville north (Polaris) And after the two-hour zombie drive, a sign that makes me feel oh so happy: "I'm on my waaay, just set me freeeee, home sweet home..." (Dear god, I'm quoting Motley Crue - it's been a long week):
  14. " We also have no compunction whatsoever about pooping and showering in front of each other" Showering is fine... but I'm sorry, there are some moments in life that are absolutely sacred and inviolate. I love my partner dearly, but I never want to be at THAT comfort level with him.
  15. "what other city has demolished 383 ft buildings?" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singer_Building http://www.skyscraper.org/TALLEST_TOWERS/t_masonic.htm http://www.emporis.com/en/wm/bu/?id=117342 http://www.detroityes.com/downtown/09hudsons.htm Only in Cleveland would people be in such a bubble...
  16. False pretenses? Is it really surprising that a thread about a suburban lifestyle center on a forum like UrbanOhio might get sidetracked? The above has nothing to do with Crocker Park but has your quality of life really deteriorated because the thread isn't 100% specifically Crocker Park oriented? Would you like a refund? This is the best we can do for you...
  17. I'd say 90% of the clothes I've picked up at H&M have been just fine - they're good for basics with a twist. And Edsiou - I work across the street from your store and every time I've walked by - I've never seen anyone in there. If you're really concerned about ladies looking trashy, you might want to consider a different approach than insulting them - then they might consider buying your "cheep" inventory :-)

Okay, so I didn't spend my lunch at the Cavs rally (sorry, had to run out and buy hair product) but I did stop by - along the way, I took a few shots: Off in the distance is my destination, the Warehouse District: All kinds of glass going on here: A good sign in downtown - and world class signage ;-) One Cleveland Center and Key Tower: Tower at Erieview looking all cool and gruesome: One of the Downtown Cleveland Ambassadors keeping downtown clean! On the Trolley! Sorry about the reflection, but this was a surreal Marlboro Man at the Justice Center moment: Terminal Tower showing support: Ladies who lunch: One great facade after another: When Mother Nature blesses Cleveland with good weather, we appreciate! Power lunchers at Johnny's Downtown: New arches, old arches: Everyone and their brother shot: 75 Public Square looking handsome: Lunchtime on Public Square: Euclid, all ripped up: Next destination, the Huntington Building: Looking east to Playhouse Square: The East 9th Street canyon with plenty of pedestrians: In the Huntington Building lobby - sorry about the blur - no tripod :-( The Superior Building: This hot guy is poised at the Federal Reserve Bank: And they're showing their support for the Cavs: Two beaux-arts classics (and a sweetheart classic ;-) ) City Hall, with the Pride flags flying high: I finally get to Mall B where someone (not sure who) is announcing all kinds of speakers (no idea) But it was a great turnout - hopefully the Cavs take advantage of home court! :-)
  20. 4th Street Live in Louisville used to be an enclosed mall, not unlike Cleveland's Galleria so it may be along the same lines as Beale Street (formerly private property).

Well, I got photos of a lot of people walking about so that was worth the price of admission - not much else was. Then again, when my high school had pep rallies I was hiding out in the art room.

Hell, even I'm getting into the spirit (see avatar).
  23. Yeah, it's a 40-story tower, built and completed last month. We just didn't bother to tell you.

Congrats! You'll soon know the joy that is the baby of the family - especially the baby of two!

Yep - lots of "big fishes" in a "small pond" - we know.
