Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
I believe the question is - "is it any good? We will see.". They're referring to Cyrus, which opened in the Powerhouse in the former Riverwalk Cafe spot. http://www.cyruswaterfront.com/ Fyi, Velocity on Clifton @ West 104th was slated to reopen today.

Cleveland: Student group seeking housing
Welcome to the forum! Given that one of you will be looking to transfer to Virginia Marti, the Edgewater area is probably a good bet. I say that because the #55 line gets the CSU people downtown quickly, and VM is in relative walking distance. I used to live on Lake Avenue - I think your best bet for that area would be to take a day and collect numbers, as a lot places don't advertise in the paper or online. There are specific buildings I would avoid and I can send you those via private message. I would try to find a place as far north from Detroit Avenue as possible - those tend to be better kept. Also, that puts you in walking distance from the Giant Eagle at West 117th and if you're in a jam, the Convenient on Clifton carries the basics (and a great beer/wine selection to boot). That also puts you near Clifton with the #55, and the closer to West 117th you get, you can also pick up the Community Circulator which takes you into Lakewood and to the Red Line station at Madison/West 117th. The Clark/Fulton area is well, an area in transition and personally I would avoid living there. There have been some newer homes built along Marvin Avenue but the area's crime rate isn't exactly desirable.

YOUNGSTOWN with the top down!
Htsguy, the architect for the Mahoning County Courthouse was Charles Owsley who also designed the Home Savings and Loan building. Lehman and Schmitt were the architects for the Cuyahoga County Courthouse - I agree there's a striking similarity.

Peak Oil
"check out this commuting costs calculator" Just for sh!ts and giggles, I plugged in the values for a friend who commutes from an outer-ring 'burb (30 mile round trip), parks in a $150 a month garage, and drives a 28mpg car - $590 a month/$7091 YEARLY!!! That's more than I paid in rent AND utilities for a small one bedroom apartment!?! The scary thing is to think that the majority of downtown Cleveland's office workers follow the same model. Imagine if those people at least moved a few miles closer - and how they could invest their savings - yeesh!

Buckeye Building (and relocating to Cleveland)
^Ever try to walk from the Warehouse District to Playhouse Square? In winter? Better yet, ever try to grab a cab from one to the other? I'd say it could be that much of a difference.

Buckeye Building (and relocating to Cleveland)
For the most part, Tremont is safe and I think you'd be fine going for a jog at most hours. 15 years ago, that might not have been the case but the area around Literary Road and West 7th has really gentrified. The one area that's problematic is property crimes - particularly car break-ins but that's something most urban neighborhoods have. There's also the common sense factor - don't leave items out in plain sight and don't leave valuables in your car and better yet, find a place with a secure garage.

YOUNGSTOWN with the top down!
So it was a beautiful sunny day in northeast Ohio, and I conned... convinced my S.O. into a little day trip to my old stomping grounds of Youngstown. Heading in, there's the Youngstown State University football stadium: And the downtown Youngstown skyline: Okay, so I'm getting gratuitous with the skyline shots: This church has seen better days: The view from the Market Street bridge: Details of the Mahoning County Courthouse and the SkyBank Building: Terra cotta on the SkyBank, an Albert Kahn classic: Downtown Youngstown's been cleaned up, but the foot traffic is still minimal: My favorite, and Youngstown's tallest at 224 feet - the First National Tower: Robert A.M. Stern designed this small but handsome Federal Courthouse: Arriving at the Butler Institute of American Art http://www.butlerart.com, we walk around to the sculpture court. This penguin was part of the Penguin Parade (Youngstown State's mascot is the Penguin): The interior of the Butler, Beecher Court: Views outside of the Butler, Youngstown's east side: The building in the foreground is the Gwathmey-Siegel designed McDonough Gallery at YSU: The nicely landscaped entrance to the Wick Avenue pedestrian bridge: Back inside the Butler's Beecher Center for Art and Technology: The exterior of the Beecher Center: And the main building of the Butler, designed by McKim, Mead and White: Back downtown, we see the base of First National Tower: Views of West Federal Street: Back in the 80s, my punk-club friends and I would see bands at Cedars (on right in background) - instead of a nice shiny office building, we had an abandoned 10-story building for a backdrop :-o The DeYor Center for Performing Arts - people were milling about prior to a performance: On we go to Mill Creek Park, Youngstown's beautiful Metropark: We arrive at our destination, Fellows Riverside Gardens at Mill Creek Park - definitely worth the drive: Views from the overlook - the former Isaly building and downtown in the distance: YSU Stadium: The neoclassical Stambaugh Auditorium: Beautiful scenery in Youngstown - not what most people would think, but it's there: The overlook of beautiful Glacier Lake: Inside the Davis Visitor and Education Center is a library with this reading nook - check out the view of Glacier Lake and the treetops! Exterior of the Davis Center: But it was time to head home - one last look toward downtown and the Home Savings and Loan building: I'm looking at Youngstown - that's what! An utterly CHARMING billboard on our way out! Back in Cleveland - I finally got a shot to prove that yes, you can see downtown from I-480 at the Northfield Road exit! (I admit I'm a geek): The requisite Valley View bridge shot: Home sweet home! :-) Hope you enjoyed!

Cleveland: Random Development and News
I believe edsiou was the forumer who mentioned this. Not the sexiest of projects but it'll be nice for that corner of the Galleria: From cleveland.com: Dollar Bank Galleria branch OK'd Plans call for grand 2-story entry Saturday, May 05, 2007 Tom Breckenridge Plain Dealer Reporter Dollar Bank is bullish on the Galleria at Erieview. The Pittsburgh-based bank gained approval Friday to convert the southwest portion of the Galleria into a grand entry for a new, two-story bank branch. "We have never felt we had a headquarters in Cleveland," said Joseph Smith, the bank's senior vice president of marketing. "We view this as a significant commitment to having a strong presence and a premier branch." More at cleveland.com http://www.cleveland.com

Cleveland: Steelyard Commons
JDD, notice the part of my post - "and that in general, most people are idiots behind the wheel". That's 90% of the problem but the ODOT engineers are responsible for the other part.

Urban Ohio Day of Service!
Hmm, I think this could be cool - let me know if anyone is available and interested! .............. This is the proposed scope and area for the Ohio City portion of the Riversweep event: 9:00 am - 9:20 am Convene at West Side Market Cafe. The Cafe is located on the Lorain side of the West Side Market. There is convenient parking in the WSM parking lot, and transit users can take the RTA Red Line to the 25th St / Market Station, or use any of the following bus lines: 20-all, 22, 25-all,35,79all,81,807(Tremont/West Side Community Circulator). For more information on routes, see www.GCRTA.org Clean up areas and routes would be: West 25th Street - north from the West Side Market to the Detroit Superior Bridge. Riverbend Road, along the Cuyahoga River. Route to get there would start at West Side Market, and then proceed for a brief time along Abbey Road. Then left onto Columbus Road and down to RiverBend Road/the Cuyahoga River. Additional side bar route is Franklin, which connects West 25th and Riverbend Road. Riverbend, West 25th, and Franklin (framed the Detroit Superior Bridge to the north and Columbus Road to the South) form an area called "Irishtown Bend". This area is largely undeveloped and, at a number of vista points, offers spectacular views of the River and the City skyline. This is a very doable and fun area given the timeframe on Saturday. Teams will be formed based on the number of participants who show up. ...............

Cleveland: Steelyard Commons
I think its pretty cool and quite easy to manuever. In and of itself, it's not bad - but factor in other drivers (and that in general, most people are idiots behind the wheel), not one but two highway offramps (and an onramp), and that most people are accustomed to one-lane roundabouts... I'm not the only one... from newsnet5.com: Bigger Sign Erected After Complaints At Roundabout/Yield Sign Part Of Improvements CLEVELAND -- Police are investigating what could be one of northeast Ohio's most dangerous intersections. The roundabout at West 14th Street in Cleveland has generated numerous complaints from the thousands of drivers who use it every week, reported 5 On Your Side Troubleshooter Joe Pagonakis. Ted John Ogle of Cleveland lives near the roundabout and he shared his insight. Pagonakis: "What have you witnessed here?" Ogle: "There are accidents everyday, collisions here constantly." Ogle lives just 250 feet from the relatively new roundabout. It was put into service at Interstate 71 and West 14th Street on city's west side this past August because of the new Steelyard Commons shopping complex. Read More...

Cleveland Locations: Have you been to all these?
You don't have to go and sit - I've gone in just to check it out, it's an amazing space.

Urban Ohio Day of Service!
I heard back from one of the coordinators - she said that Ohio City has the greatest need. I'm waiting to get specific details on the work area, but if we can get a tentative headcount, that'd be great.

Youngstown: The Incredible Shrinking City
In all seriousness - be careful if you go. It's not the best idea to take a long walk through the area, and though the area can be desolate in spots, violent crime isn't uncommon. Stay close to your car and trust your gut.

Cleveland: Bob Stark Warehouse District Project
^I *think* the holdout people were at the opposite side (West 6th and Superior) with the parking deck. The former "Titanic Tower" (heehee) at West 3rd and St. Clair has had their signage removed so interesting indeed...

Urban Ohio Day of Service!
X, I think that's a great idea. I've sent an email asking about specific areas - I think Ohio City, Tremont or the Flats would be the most easily accessible (and central) for everyone.

Youngstown: The Incredible Shrinking City
For sh!ts and giggles, I made a Google map of the Oak Hill area and 'tagged' buildings that were vacant/collapsing as well as some of the photos posted above. When you see how many there are (and this map is not comprehensive), and how many vacant lots there are - the idea of shrinking the city becomes plausible. http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&t=h&om=1&msid=111501388969053870983.0000011257530374ea6d6&ll=41.089799,-80.660634&spn=0.024097,0.046134&z=15
