  1. Welcome to the forum. While I understand why you might not care about the small town/suburban development, for the most part they are tied into the Greater Cleveland area. This specific thread is basically a catch-all for projects not in the city, or those that are too small to warrant their own thread.
  2. Just throwing out June 2nd as a potential date for the formal "big meet". Also - on Wednesday, May 9th, BuckeyeNative001, a forumer from skyscraperpage.com (and I think he visits here as well), will be visiting Cleveland for the day. If anyone wants to meet for lunch and a quick tour of downtown interior spots (Federal Reserve, etc.), let me know via PM.
  3. I'm not sure if it ever had a decorative cornice, but imho the 1010 building isn't terribly remarkable:

"If you incorporate green elements in your project, you can apply for LEED certification. I am aware of LEED silver, gold and platiunum categories." There is also LEED-NC (for new construction) and LEED-EB (existing buildings), both break down into the platinum, gold, and silver categories.
  5. From everything I've read (and I'm very familiar with Highland Square), I'd steer your friend toward Clifton/Edgewater. If he was only working downtown, then go for Ohio City/Detroit-Shoreway/etc. Getting to/from River from the inner hoods via 90 can be a pain in the arse - with Clifton/Edgewater, he can zip down Lake or Clifton. On the days he works downtown, he can take the 55. I'd also recommend it since he'd be moving from one gayborhood to another and it would be a little less jarring.
  6. ^Exactly. Just because someone has a passion for something (books, art, music) - it doesn't automatically qualify them for going into business.
  7. "While the area around the West Side Market has flourished with new condominiums, restaurants and bars, he says that traffic doesn't keep the same hours as his bookstore, and that people who have come for a night out aren't in the book-buying mood." Here's a wacky idea - adjust your hours accordingly, and offer an evening event that might actually bring in some of the pre-bar crowd. Other merchants along 25th have collaborated and come up with successful ideas... Sorry - I remember an article that came out during the "rent party" and I recall one of the times I stopped in the store. Nothing is really organized and basic customer service is non-existent. I don't have time (nor do most of my peers) to take a few hours to sift through unsorted inventory. I also don't appreciate getting scowled at because I interrupted the owner's reading during open hours. If I want to support local bookstores, I'll go to Crooked River in the Galleria, or Loganberry on Larchmere - they've managed to marry their passion for books with a little bit of business savvy.

Oh dear - she was like Scrappy-Doo to that show! And in case anyone starts taking the thread too far off-topic, there's always the private messaging option :-)

That would be Dixie Carter, thank you. Or are you trying to suggest I *used* to be thin and pretty?!? :x
  10. Okay folks - it's that time again! Some are a little tricky but let's see who really knows their stuff! :-D Western Reserve Building Annex - guessed by 3231: Palace Theatre - guessed by 3231: Storage Warehouse across from Cedar-University Circle Rapid Station, guessed by OC_Charlie: Society for Savings, guessed by StrapHanger:
  11. Thanks to cooperative weather, here are more pics:
  12. I think they did a good job, so I'm not complaining. :-)
  13. You know what method my parents used to inspire me to go to college? Whenever we drove around the backroad squalor of southern Columbiana County, they pointed out the dilapidated shacks (and/or trailers) where squatters lived and said "if you don't go to college, you could always live in a place like this!". I say the State rounds up some charter buses and employs my parents' method :-D
  14. This isn't the best angle to show the contrast, but look at the parking lot, the exposed girders, etc. instead of an enclosed garage, glassed atrium:
  15. This isn't a criticism of them building more - it's a criticism of not finishing Tower City Center in the first place.
  16. The DCA site looks good - took a while to get there, but I approve :-) goodjobambassadors, I understand your frustration when you see one of your own being criticized for not doing their job. I think most of us are thankful for the Ambassador program and we've noticed a definite improvement in many areas. The "Clean" group is certainly doing their job - having worked downtown for the past ten years, the improvement is remarkable. However, no one is above sincere criticism and as you said, there has to be some level of accountability. I don't think anyone here would want to see an Ambassador lose their job, but if they're slacking off - sorry, they need a reprimand just like anyone else. One reason that the Downtown Cleveland Alliance got flak was because there really was no way to contact them. Now that the web site is up and running, people can direct their concerns to someone rather than venting at whoever, or an Ambassador that they encounter. That said, please keep up the good work!
  17. I was looking through some old papers I'd clipped from magazines... look familiar? And notice anything about this particular rendering? *cough*half-@ssed*cough*
  18. "I really think it is a disservice to someone just to label one part of their lives and say "This is who they are."" So along those lines of thinking... how did he vote on Issue 1, I wonder. "I believe that sex was God's idea. It is something God created between a man and wife in the context of marriage. This is what we promote and celebrate at Gateway." Oh that's right - marriage = man and woman, and thus gays are left out of the equation entirely. Thanks, I'll pass.
  19. You of all people shouldn't be throwing stones from your glass house when it comes to spelling and grammar!
  20. I can assure you that since Gateway Church has no language along the lines of "Open and Affirming" (aka inclusive to the gay community), they are not affiliated with the United Church of Christ.
  21. Remember that Hagan doesn't have a track record of being shrewd with finances - he was one of the people leading the charge for Gateway. I think they're still waiting to make a dime off that, aren't they? He needs to be called out, imho.
  22. "Anyone from downtown go there for lunch?" At least once a week, and I think it should do well with the college kids.
  23. The weather has been on the chilly side (upper 40s, low 50s) - some of my favorite photo-taking weather because everything looks so crisp. From East 9th: Detail view of the Garfield Building: Work progressing on the East 4th storefronts: Meet Me Here! Guardians of Transportation, and Tremont's St. Theodosius Church in the background: Women's Final Four at the Q: Facade hodgepodge: I absolutely love what Zaremba is doing with the Avenue District and wish them nothing but the best, but world class signage? Geez... A view west down St. Clair Avenue: Over in the Warehouse District, facade details: Quite possibly one of the coolest alleys in the city: One of my favorites, the Bradley Building: More facades: How's that for contrast? Stonebridge Plaza is coming along nicely: People out and about on West 9th: Grabbing lunch at Constantino's Market: Yet another cool facade! A quick stop at the Arcade: Looking up from the Flats: Rooftops of East 4th buildings: The street's a mess with the Euclid Corridor Project but 668 Euclid has a green roof! The awesome cornice of the United Church of Christ headquarters: The not-often seen side of the Arcade's skylight: I kinda like Cleveland's Lady Liberty - she looks much more bad-@ss than NYC's :-D Zipping over the Main Avenue Bridge, with Stonebridge Plaza peeking up: Skyline shot from the Columbus Road bridge: I love how the sun is obscuring the Key logo in this shot :-) The Federal Courthouse tower catching some rays: 200 Public Square: One of these might not be around for long: Hope you enjoyed!

If I told you, I'd risk my chance at winning $100 for a dinner for two - and I'd like to take my man to Lola :-)
