BET.com ranks Columbus as 2nd best city for Black Americans, Cleveland the worst
Well what do you mean by "move forward"? Are you suggesting that there is somewhere we should be, but aren't? I'm really not following... I think the forum does a good job of being inclusive and understanding, and most members seem genuinely interested in hearing about others' experiences. So what next? Do we have a corporate retreat with group hugs, trust falls and skits to teach us how to interact with those who are different? And exactly who are you referring to when you suggest that some of us don't understand people from various backgrounds, religions, races, cultures and sexual orientation? Just as the white males on the forum shouldn't make race/gender-based assumptions - neither should the minority members.

"How can urbanohio, move forward and expect people of color to get involved" Unlike certain organizations in Cleveland (and Ohio), this site has always been open to anyone and everyone, and I take pride in the fact that our members make people feel welcome. There is nothing stopping anyone of color (whatever color) from joining - and I'm sorry, I don't think we're obligated to go out of our way to prove that. If people of color are put off by the fact that the forum is largely comprised of white males in the 25-35 age range, that's their problem - not mine. If people of color are leery of how they'll be treated, it is not my job to change their biased and inaccurate perceptions. If people of color shun this forum because they feel that minorities aren't represented, I would suggest they follow the advice of Gahndi and "be the change that you want to see...".

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
And of course this morning on Fox 8, the mother was wailing "I want justice! They shouldn't be killing these young men! He was only 17!". Justice for a punk who tried to run down a cop? Maybe if she had intervened in her child's life earlier this wouldn't have happened! From cleveland.com Shot teen had troubled history Posted by Gabriel Baird March 23, 2007 10:41AM Angelo Miller, the 17-year-old suspect shot by a Cleveland police officer early this morning, has been in and out of trouble since he turned 13, according to police reports. He was most recently arrested last month. Police pulled over a 2001 Chrysler Concorde that had been reported stolen. Gallipolis / Gallia County: Developments and News
Welcome to the forum. You may want to consider the fact that this forum focuses on cities (it is UrbanOhio.com, after all). That's great that you enjoy the rural atmosphere that Gallia County offers. However, try to understand that others might find that rural atmosphere to be too isolated and stifling for their tastes. I don't see that John made any comments that you should be personally offended by. I grew up in Columbiana County and quite frankly, I was happy to "get the hell out of there" - but I can see why others might find it appealing.

Cleveland: Downtown Cleveland Alliance News & Discussion
Or get the panhandlers off East 9th... mind you none were overly aggressive but after a while I was getting *this* close to getting sassy... :whip: Southbound to get lunch: 1. Northwest corner of East 9th and St. Clair (Penton Media building) 2. In front of IMG Center (between Theresa Court and St. Clair) 3. In front of CVS (north of Rockwell) 4. Northwest corner of East 9th and Superior (Hampton Inn) 5. Southwest corner of East 9th and Superior (KeyBank Center aka 800 Superior) 6. In front of Euclid-9th Tower (south of Euclid) Northbound to go back to work: 1. Northwest corner of Vincent and East 9th (KeyBank Center's garage) 2. Northwest corner of East 9th and Superior (Hampton Inn) - Repeat offender 3. In front of CVS (north of Rockwell) - Repeat offender 4. Northwest corner of East 9th and St. Clair (Penton Media building) - same place, different offender 5. Northwest corner of East 9th and St. Clair (RTA bus shelter). Now, wouldn't it be great if DCA had a proper web site where people could report "hot spots" to give a heads-up to their Ambassadors? I mean, they're great at sweeping up litter from the grounds of the Board of Education building but given a choice I think most people would rather deal with a discarded newspaper than the twits I had to deal with today.

"Its can be a subtle as walking into a store and having a sales person "ask you if you need help" or say "can I show you anything?" Here's an example of a "thing" called having a chip on your shoulder. The above situation describes one of two things - a helpful salesperson doing their job, or a customer feeling like they're being profiled. It is conceivable, even possible that the former is the case. When I worked retail, it was standard operating procedure to address every customer - the purpose was twofold: make them aware that you're paying attention to them, and making them aware that you're paying attention to them.

^Here's the problem with that - to any business or organization, your web site is your calling card. The care and attention given to it reflect a lot about the group in question. It would be like me (as a graphic designer) not having a proper portfolio. A web site is so often the first point of contact for any organization. Not having, or having an ineffectual site: 1. Prevents anyone from being able to pass along the site's address for contact purposes. 2. Suggests to the outside world that the group is incapable of embracing technology. 3. Not having an email address for contact suggests that they are unwelcoming. 4. Shows a lack of interest in providing resources for those unaffiliated with the group. I know that they are getting ready to launch their revised site but the interim "caretaking" leaves a lot to be desired. I know all too well that it's not easy to put a site together, but as Vulpster said - other groups with less resources have managed to put something together.

Skylines Combined--Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati =)
"Philly has never been that much of a skyscraper city." I'm not sure why you would suggest that - after they lifted the height restriction in Philly, they built quite a few towers (over 500 ft.). Prior to that, they still had a healthy amount. "Philly's skyline is unimpressive." Riiiight - keep in mind this image doesn't show the newly constructed Comcast Center which is taller than Key Tower - photo from phillyskyline.com: Also from phillyskyline.com - with the Comcast Center under construction:

Race
"1) You possess physical traits and/or a surname that clearly sets you apart from the majority population." Hotheadedness (German) and a fiery temper (Irish). Check. "2) In your daily life, you are actively endeavoring to preserve the language and culture of your ethnic components," Beer (German and Irish) and potatoes (Irish - remember I'm making up for the Famine). Check. "3) You are either an immigrant or first generation with naturalized parents." Grandparents came over via the boat, so my parents are first generation. Close enough! ;-)

"I am 50% Korean, 25% German and 25% Irish. Yet I can't hold liquor worth shit." Poor thing - I'm half-Irish, half-German, so I can't relate. "Well, Sir....maybe you can be so kind and make this a sticky and come up with a special pic just for this thread? smoooches...." Maybe, but you didn't answer my question.

"To pay by credit card, phone..." WTF?!? In this day and age of fraud and identity theft? And mailing a check, but no tickets will be mailed back? Suppose someone is left off the list - how do they prove they've paid? Oh, and of course - there's NO mention of using transit to get to the event. I try, I reeeeally try to be supportive, but it really isn't easy with stuff like this.

Ohio & National Intercity Bus Discussion
"The bus is economical but there's just nothing more liberating than taking a nice car on a long road trip." Okay, if we're talking a leisurely scenic drive through some majestic national park, I could see that. But the areas in question are usually nothing but flat (or flat-ish) fields of corn. I think that's more mind-numbing than liberating. And as others have said - sitting in congested traffic, or dealing with 80mph bumper-to-bumper maniacs is hardly some idyllic adventure via the auto.

Cleveland: Marketing the City
"I'm on the committee that the GCP (actually the GCMA... same people) recruited to create feedback on this stuff... Its a lot of young professionals with regional diversity, but no racial/ethnic/sexual diversity. Mostly white males varying in age from around the region as a whole." So basically a bunch of older hetero white males who have been running the show, are setting up another bunch of hetero white males to continue running the show all to themselves? What the hell is this - 1957? Exactly how are people who aren't hetero, white, or male supposed to feel any sense of inclusion? Or, are they being told (indirectly) that their inclusion isn't needed or wanted? It is incomprehensible and unconscionable that in 2007, there is no diversity (beyond geography) on this committee. If the people at GCP ever wonder why they get the flak they do - it's precisely because of things like this.

"City Living" in Cleveland...
On the "something else" side, I know several people who own restored homes in Tremont that have 3K square feet (not including a finished basement). They all bought them in the past five years and they paid $200K (give or take). Personally, I like the Fries and Scheule building - I believe some of the condos there were selling for around $200K at one point.

How about my high school - Salem's Quakers (our mascot, Quaker Sam is pictured below) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salem,_Ohio- Cleveland: Where to Stay?
The Hilton is just fine but it's a bit out of the way - the Hyatt is in perfect walking distance from Quicken Loans/East 4th (which will have even more spots open by then). The Hilton doesn't have a whole lot around it, either. The Renaissance wouldn't be a bad choice but if prices are equal - go with the Hyatt. You might want to check the Radisson downtown as well - very close to East 4th/Quicken. - Strange school nicknames
