^I agree with you, except in the case of rats with wings (some people call them pigeons). I'd pay for electrified nets for those things!

Cleveland: Cuyahoga County Gov't properties disposition (non-Ameritrust)
Okay, getting back on topic, I've added a few pics to the Cleveland Trust Tower section on my site, as well as links to a few pertinent blogs: http://www.clevelandskyscrapers.com/cleveland/clevelandtrusttower.html

Reverse Migration back North
I know Phoenix is another destination for Ohio-based retirees, and that people usually cite "health reasons" for moving there. However, when I visited for a week last year, my allergies which are usually more of a nuisance than anything were awful because of the smog and dust. I'm sure people with arthritis fare better with the warm weather, but god forbid they have any kind of respiratory issues. It's like the article says - putting that much distance between you and the family you depend on can be such a strain. "“I know exactly how I want to die,” he said. “I want to go over to the Eastland Inn, have a shot of whiskey and a beer, and then they can take me to the funeral home.”" Atta boy! :drunk:

Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
^^I soooo wish the lady at the Colonial Marketplace would open a full-size restaurant so she could serve lunch AND dinner. Ok, that settles it - I'm going there for lunch today :-D

Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
"So where is a good Indian food place for dinner?" There are a few decent places around - I like Cafe Tandoor (several area locations) but I know some say that the Cleveland Heights location is best. Some friends have said Saffron Patch is good, but a little pricier than Tandoor. I know that if you like authentic south Indian, the best place is Udupi Cafe on Chevrolet Blvd. in Parma - it's strictly vegetarian but I hear rave reviews. Btw, welcome to the forum.

LaGuardia via bus?
If you mean an express bus/shuttle that charges a flat fee, it's probably easier to grab a cab. If you mean public transit bus, can't help ya.

East Coasters with Kiddo Moving to Cleveland
"The further east you get the more wisteria lane it gets." More like Wist-yiddish Lane - and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. :-) Beachwood has a high percentage of Jewish residents (mostly Reform, the Orthodox congregations are west in areas like Cleveland Heights and South Euclid).

Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
"MayDay prefers overpriced "fu-fu" mac n' cheese. I prefer "bang for your buck" collard greens and ribs. Difference in taste, I suppose." No dear, it's a difference in standards. ;-) You know as well as I do that I like good greens, ribs, candied yams, black-eyed peas, etc. or do I need to remind you of my dating history? And for the record - when I was growing up my dad was laid off for a three-year stretch (he worked in a machine shop). During those years, the only cheese I consumed came in a five pound brick courtesy of the gub'ment. So excuse me for having developed a more sophisticated palate!

Should Gay Districts Be Preserved?
David, I think you've misinterpreted here. This isn't so much about making all gayborhoods exclusively gay, straight, or whatever, nor is it about promoting any area as such. A marginal few (like those quoted in the article) might hope for that, but that's not what's at stake. What is being examined are areas such as the Castro in San Francisco and Chelsea in NYC, where the modern gay rights movement was born. These areas are historically important to the gay community - and there are certain aspects of those areas that I do think should be preserved (and to some extent, already have). Here's a link that explains the history of the Stonewall Riots and the area of the East Village/Chelsea in NYC http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stonewall_riots In many cases, these neighborhoods served as beacons to those who grew in more oppressive areas - places where they knew they could go and live their lives without people doing a double-take (for example, two guys/gals trying to rent an apartment together). Now, as metrocity explained - those areas have become too expensive to be sustainable. So if the new residents don't have any regard for the area's importance to the gay community... what happens to our history? Plenty of heteros move into said areas, well aware of the history and everyone gets along, but not all - and that's the problem. If a hetero couple with children moves into an area because it's cleaned up, but is offended at the sight of a same-sex couple holding hands, that's the concern. I do worry when people like Adam Light (from the article) make blatantly provincial remarks - that doesn't help the cause one bit. Oh, by the way - as it is currently written, Ohio housing law does not prevent discrimination based on sexual orientation.

Ohio Smoking Ban
"No smoking within 25 feet of an entrance?" Maybe because the cancer-stick crowd (not you specifically, but your co-horts) tend to congregate in one area, right next to the door so the rest of us have to walk through the resulting deathcloud to enter/exit our building.

Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
On the occasion that I'm out that way - I explained to my friends that in no way, shape or form will I ever set foot in some establishment named "Hoggys". Besides, the Aladdins at Crocker has Dortmunder Gold so I'd much rather go there.

Cleveland's young professionals: West Side or East?
Here's my take, as one of the founding Admins of this forum, and having spent years as an Admin of the Midwest section of skyscraperpage.com's forum (in other words, this ain't my first time in the rodeo). The problem is this - most of the "regulars" understand that the comments aren't serious and that everyone's just busting each others chops; but we have a lot of new people (and lurkers) who might not. What happens is they jump into the fray and things get out of hand, really fast. Then I have to jump in and clean up the mess, like Mommie Dearest*. I have better ways to spend my time, and I think we all have better things to do than perpetuate the recycled garbage of East Side/West Side. I don't know about the rest of you, but I live in Cleveland, period. *

Cleveland's young professionals: West Side or East?
Yes, Lakewood and Rocky River, especially that trashy Beachcliff area are just sooo horrid. Let's see - MyTwoSense and jamiec find it necessary to make derogatory comments about Cleveland's West side. That might be cute, except your Cleveland-based Admin resides on the West side - and I can decide that such comments violate the terms of the forum and suspend your accounts indefinitely. Care to reconsider your terms?

"Haven't us eastsiders been punished enough, by having to look at all those horrible fashion mistakes born (the clothing ensembles) on the westside?" How 50s of you. The next comment like that gets you a day off.

Welcome to the forum (and eventually to Cleveland). I'm going to say from first impressions, you'll like Shaker Heights. If you're familiar with Philadelphia, it's not entirely unlike the "Main Line" communities. Chagrin Falls is lovely, but it's a bit off the beaten path - very quaint, like a small New England town in a valley. However, getting to and from downtown/entertainment/etc. would be problematic. Transit options to/from Chagrin Falls are rather sparse and it's lacking in diversity. A lot of people go to Chagrin Falls for a quaint local day-trip getaway, though. Shaker Heights is much closer to transit (for the hubby's downtown job), and other amenities. Shaker Heights was developed in the early 20th century around the transit lines that lead to downtown. Keep in mind that you might experience 'reverse sticker shock' coming from the East Coast. Even though things like property taxes in Shaker are high when compared to greater Cleveland - the overall cost is still relatively low. I can try to put you in contact with a realtor who might have rentals available if you'd like. There are also several realtors who read this forum regularly who can probably help. Let us know if you'd like more info :-)

Ohio: Residency Rule Requirement
"Judge Corrigan rules in favor of the little man, city workers. Rules against big business, the city!!!!" No - that didn't appear anywhere in the article - those are your words. I wouldn't pack the U-Hauls yet - that's all I'm going to say.
