Cleveland: Steelyard Commons
w28th, that's a very good piece from Metropolis - I enjoyed reading again and it certainly would apply to the Steelyard site. However, there's an important quote: "In 1989, the Westphalian government chartered an organization called the IBA, a flexible, independent planning corporation, to transform the Ruhr's image with innovative architectural and cultural projects." In other words, the group was able to secure state-level backing to create the IBA. Cleveland can't get state-level backing to support its own home-rule laws or much of anything for that matter. Could that change with Strickland as governor? I'd like to think it could (and would).

Cleveland's young professionals: West Side or East?
"i suspect the westide is the "place to be" because there arent many blacks there." Play the race card somewhere else, because it's not going to fly here.

What do you think of these names?
d2 is a pretty well-known fashion design group, http://www.dsquared2.com/. In all seriousness, I'm not trying to be condescending - and MTS knows that I'm busting his chops :-) I hope I don't come across as too brutal. Having worked in advertising and marketing for the past 14 years (and working with small businesses/start-ups) - a lot of entrepreneurs don't run their ideas by anyone. That, or they limit their "test run" to people who are too close to offer sincere criticism. Then, when they launch - they can't understand why they get snickered at when they say their company name at events. Almost every concept/brand has some potentially bad connotation and while you can't avoid everything, it doesn't hurt to rule out the bad stuff. And I agree - Chartreuse has done a great job.

Cleveland: Steelyard Commons
"What's wrong with being critical of a glorified strip mall? " Nothing at all - and as a matter of fact, this forum welcomes said criticism. But adding caustic insults to that criticism that serve no purpose? I have a problem with that. Dan - if you like ANYthing that's been developed in Cleveland, you have never mentioned it here. Here's an idea - visit this thread at skyscraperpage.com's forum, and point out three project that you might actually feel some sense that they're "decent". Can you do it? Just give it try: http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=97396

Ohio City or Tremont (Cleveland)
Ah - that helps put things in perspective. You will definitely find the area of West 25th in Ohio City to be more to your liking. It won't compare with the high-density neighborhoods of Montreal you're familiar with, but it does have a similar flavor.

"I'm generally very positive on Cleveland." Not on this forum you aren't.

Cleveland: Steelyard Commons
Bookstores and record shops? Riiiight - people who shop there would rather try to find their goods at Target. Okeydokey.

Cleveland: Steelyard Commons
^If it's so awful, and so horrible - why are you here? If all you have to offer this forum is complaints and generalizing judgements of an entire region based on the faults of a single project, why are you here? Do you really have so much free time that you can spend it wallowing in negativity?

Cleveland: Steelyard Commons
Most neighborhood storefront stores serve different niches than what's being offered at Steelyard - and there's nothing new to the area going into Steelyard. How many times do you have to hear this? Clevelanders have been shopping at EIFS/concrete wonderlands for years - Clevelanders' money has been going to Home Depot, Target and Wal-Mart for a long time - it just so happened to be in Brookpark, Rocky River, North Olmsted, etc. People that go to places like the Banyan Tree and Eye Candy Gallery aren't going to suddenly choose to buy art and home decor at Target. An Applebees is not going to put the South Side or Prosperity Social Club out of business - why? Just like independent retailers, the indy restaurants serve a different market. If Cleveland's independent retail and restaurants are going to be vaporized because of some chain stores opening shop, they have a lot worse problems than Steelyard Commons.

What do you think of these names?
Marlboro is also the name of a rural township about 10 miles from where I grew up. However... Marlboro Men most certainly sounds like an escort service - a butch one. In all honesty, picture yourself introducing your company over the phone and giving someone your email address - in a hurry. It should be easy to remember and easier to deliver.

What do you think of these names?
*Ahem* - Shaker Squared Atelier. Marlboro Men? If it's an escort service, you'd do well in Cleveland.

So let's define downtown Cleveland in our own words!
Uptown? UPtown? Oyyy...

Looking for black and white pics
Mary, welcome to the forum and please accept my condolences. I had the privilege of meeting Sean a few times while Metro Joe's was open and he was always so gracious, kind and welcoming. I'm so sorry to hear of his passing, but kudos to your folks for taking over the business and contributing to the Hospice. I might be able to supply some photos for you and I'll also contact other photographers and let them know about your request. Thank you again, welcome to the forum and all the best. :-)

Ohio City or Tremont (Cleveland)
Welcome to the forum. I edited your message since it's a Cleveland-specific thread. To answer your question, I'd say the two areas are almost apples and oranges. Ohio City has a much more mixed-use feel with West 25th/Market Square being a retail/services hub, and Tremont is more residential in flavor. Ohio City has more multi-family housing so the pedestrian traffic is a little heavier. Both have "buzz" to them - but again, each has a different kind of buzz.

Cleveland's young professionals: West Side or East?
First - can someone tell me why Tremont is considered "west side"? It may be west of the Cuyahoga, but it sits EAST of Public Square. I'm not saying it's an east-side neighborhood but look at the map: "Here, it seems like those living west of the Cuyahoga River seldom go east of downtown..." Sorry but that's the furthest thing from what I've experienced. Most west-siders venture east plenty of times, usually for events/outings in University Circle (museums, orchestras, etc.), Little Italy (Feast), or Cleveland Heights (Cain Park, Coventry, Cedar-Lee), and shopping - particularly near Beachwood/Legacy. Now, what I *have* experienced is the notion that "east siders never cross the river" - not all, but enough for me to make a generalization. My guesses as to why YPs might favor the West Side: 1. Lower property taxes (with the exception of Lakewood). 2. Generally, lower rental prices. 3. Proximity to the Lake (Edgewater and Lakewood Parks). 4. Better highway access to downtown and "hot spots" in Ohio City/Tremont. 5. Established bar scene (west side Irish).

Cleveland: Random Development and News
As much as I'd love to be able to squeeze my cracker curves into a 29 waist, it ain't gonna happen - not without serious injury. I know they aren't "premium" denim but I have always had good luck with Mavi and heaven forbid, DKNY.

What do you think of these names?
I'm just saying that if you go with one of those names - be aware that you may have to do some spin against some of the things I pointed out.

What do you think of these names?
My first impressions: Behind Closed Eyes - Do you want to imply that you're blind? Contents Under Pressure - Someone needs depressants. Eminent Domain - So, you only offer legal assistance to developers? Imaginative Execution - Creative guillotines? In the Presence of Others - If you're on Earth, chances are you are in the presence of others. Project 5 - Sounds like a bad Star Search singing group - I give you 3 stars. Pulling Out All the Stops - Too damned wordy. Revel - Oh, those wireless people with the angsty commercials! Skillful Maneuvers - Kinky! (The) Comfort Zone - Aren't people supposed to always try to step out of that? (The) Gentleman’s Quarters - A nautical-themed piano bar for "my people"? The Monolith & the Minimalist - Sounds like artsy gay p0rn. The Third Dimension - I'm picturing sequinned jumpsuits and 70s EW&F music. Wow - Whoopee. Woohoo.

Clevelanders: request for help!
I'll ask my S.O. - he works for the City and he might know someone who knows someone.

The Cleveland Photo Trivia Thread (Updated April 4, 2007)
StrapHanger, those are two toughies - is the first a townhouse south of Lorain in the West 20s? I don't know the exact spot of the second pic, but I know it's a townhome just south of Detroit Avenue... I want to say in the West 40s?

Traveling with Laptops & Cameras
Not sure about laptops but I just put my digital camera through the X-ray machine and it was fine. I wouldn't put film through the X-ray machine though. I carried my camera on the plane and took plenty of photos. However, some heiferb!tch stewardess tried to tell me I had to turn it off on the return descent into CLE which is not a TSA requirement. In addition to politely correcting her error, I told her that her choice of mascara wasn't doing her any favors unless she was going for the tarantula look.

South Euclid, Ohio: a low-profile mid-century suburb on the edge
Oh Nancy, please - stop trying to be coy, it doesn't suit you.

Cleveland: HealthLine / Euclid Corridor
"geez, in front of the arcade/515 garage, they've reduced the sidewalk down to about four feet. Its not fun." Just like how they had the sidewalk by the Park Building for the longest time - single-file in each direction. I was more than happy to drop a shoulder and bump idiots who tried to walk three across. I swear it sounded like bowling pins being hit

Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
^I have to say that as a graphic designer and being in the industry for 14 years, I've never (knock on wood) had a problem finding work in Cleveland.

Cleveland: Random Development and News
"I think Marous Bros. discussed a condo conversion for this building a few years back." Correct - it was listed on Progressive Urban for a while as a 5-unit residential property. They were going to place balconies on the Euclid facade had the project gone through. Maybe with things finally on the uptick on lower Euclid, it'll get done this time.
