Medina County
Like most other ex-urbs, they offer a lower tax rate - for now. Down the road, when they overbuild homes, overwhelm the infrastructure, overcrowd the schools, etc. you'll see those taxes go up. People will vote down the tax levies - after all, if they wanted higher taxes, they wouldn't have moved there. Add extra traffic (since it's completely auto-centric), and the quality of life will decline. So the lemmings will move further out to escape their own kind - rinse, lather, repeat.

MayDay's 2006 Travels - PHOENIX and CHICAGO!
I took two signifcant out-of-state trips this year, the first was to Phoenix (and Mexico), the second was Chicago. Here's a look back at what I saw: En route to Phoenix: As soon as we landed, it was off to Puerto Peñasco, Mexico: It was nice to wake up to this for a week :-D: Back to the States: Can you believe my boyfriend wouldn't let me try and gank this window!?! Later in the year, we went to Chicago: Sorry about the arrow - it's marking the entrance to the Market Days festival: A little bit of home :-D

Merry X-Mas From James Howard Kunstler
Yet more reason for me to prefer "A Christmas Story" as the quintessential holiday film. It's a far more realistic portrayal of what most people experience. This is right up there with my recent analysis of "Little Drummer Boy" - a poor impoverished drummer has nothing else to offer but his talent. That sounds all precious and inspiring, doesn't it? However, when that talent involves drumming around a newborn baby? Sounds like Little Drummer Boy was more like an insensitive b@stard who thought nothing of making loud noises around a newborn, who also happened to be the Messiah/savior of mankind, etc. Sorry - I don't think Mary and Joseph would have put up with that for too long. Call me a humbug, but that's my take. :-D

Cleveland: Bob Stark Warehouse District Project
Dan, the article you posted was already posted in the "Flats East Bank" thread, and I'd prefer if we keep the discussions separate. There's already dialogue about the pros and cons of demo'ing for the Wolstein plan so folks, please continue the discussion there. I have little choice but to delete the off-topic posts. I apologize if a specific post was deleted, but things need to be tidy around here so let's keep this thread strictly about Stark's proposal. http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php?topic=1823.msg148494#new Thanks!

For visual reference - the only buildings really worth mentioning are two older brick structures: Almost dead center, below the Main Avenue Bridge: And a closer look. Granted they're old but quite frankly they're not terribly remarkable for being old brick warehouse buildings. I'm usually on the side of preservation/re-use, but in this case I don't think there would be any significant loss. As blinker12 and w28th have pointed out, the vast majority of the buildings in question are dumpy 80s shacks:

"MS Word?? You've got to be kidding me. I can't believe a publishing company wants you to work in Word." The reasoning behind it is that most of their authors are older, retired, and working in groups of two or three and Word is generally the most widely used (and most familiar). They've set up their workflow so that authors simply type the captions for each photo, present a mockup of the layout and their designers do the rest. They weren't used to an author who has been in the design business as long as I have. All of the photography is mine :-)

"Congrats on the book. I love these book series, and have often wanted to do one myself. How easy are they to do? Did you provide original photograhy?" Thank you - honestly, it was a lot of work. The only images I didn't provide were from vintage postcards. The majority of the work came from researching the lesser-known buildings. It's easy to come up with material for the major buildings but the little out-of-the-way buildings don't offer much. Also, it was hard for me to work in Microsoft Word - I've been using Quark for almost 15 years and I would have preferred to do the layout myself, but it wasn't an option.
