Oh no - she's definitely a Glinda! :lol: Back to your question - I think a good overall mix of retailers would be best for downtown. For now (meaning the next three to five years) I think the lower to above-moderate range (everything from Old Navy/Urban Outfitters on up to say, Banana/Club Monaco/Hugo Boss) would be the most viable, because honestly I think the Gucci/Fendi/Prada level would struggle. It wouldn't hurt to have a Bloomingdales but I think that would depend on if a lot of the residential proposals come through (Lighthouse Landing, Flats East Bank, Stonebridge build-out, etc.). Once we have enough of a built-in clientele (aka downtown and inner 'hood residents) *then* the upmarket retailers could make a go of it. Of course I absolutely think a Vosges Chocolate boutique needs to open right this minute (my waistline might suffer though).

Repeat after me - MayDay likes retail (for the most part). "Personally, I see wanna be style followers shopping at those stores." Rather than judge peoples' motives for shopping at such places, I'm just glad they shop there rather than the local feedsack store. I also consider that maybe not everyone is able to afford stores like Barneys or Bergdorf, but I give them points for trying. Rather than judge them for doing the best they can with what they have, I consider that maybe they don't make as much as me, or maybe they're spending their money on something else, like tuition.

I''ve shopped at mexx - some of us do actually travel, you know. Uniqlo's site annoyed me enough to have second thoughts of ever giving them a chance.

Uhhh, I've shopped at H&M before they opened in Greater Cleveland. Anyway, I wasn't directing my comments at anyone in particular. Speaking of Tower City - I stopped in at Papyrus and they looked like they were closing - 70% off sale, and about 80% of the shelves were empty with no restocking in sight.

^They're just being garden variety b!tchy queens, with a pinch of materialistic classism. I'm with you - I have some pricier stuff from a few splurges and I have some H&M/UO stuff (and some vintage) and everything has held up quite well. You don't go to places like that for a head to toe ensemble, but for some basics or everyday - there's nothing wrong with them.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the former Downtown Cleveland Partnership is being spun off into the Greater Cleveland Partnership as well the Downtown Cleveland Alliance, the difference being the Alliance is a self-taxing group of downtown property owners. I would imagine that like all such groups in Cleveland - there's some overlap. Now - if they had more effective communication - there wouldn't be any confusion, but that's their prerogative. Regardless, both of their sites are offline and offer absolutely no direction for potentially interested clients. Prior to being down, downtownclevelandpartnership.com had a starburst header that read "Coming Soon, a new Downtown Cleveland Alliance site!" for several months. Now, downtownclevelandalliance.com pulls up a site for an Apache software site - presumably the new site is being developed using Apache or on an Apache server. That's all well and good and a sign that maybe they're ready to get back online, but a group of that caliber should be able to provide a simple contigency "Pardon our Dust" page with a nominal amount of contact info until they're ready to go. Also, they should have a redirect on their old site, but maybe that's asking too much in the year 2006. I don't know about anyone else, but I've had people ask me directly via my site about opening offices in downtown. They want to know what kinds of places are available, close to certain amenities, and most importantly - how is the city able to work with them. I know some local property managers enough to point these people in the right direction for a few of those things, but I'd like to think that DCA would be much more suited to handle their requests. How would I do that right now?

Just in case you didn't know (and it's okay if you didn't :-) ), you do have the option of using the forum's private messaging system:

Hmm, so if I had some money to invest and I was interested in opening a new business venture in downtown Cleveland, I would go online for information. If I knew of someone who wanted to open a business in downtown Cleveland - I'd want to refer them to the Downtown Cleveland Alliance site. However, the PRIMARY go-to site is not just under construction but completely offline with no explanation - not even a "Under construction, please email so-and-so for information"? That's like going to a networking event and not having business cards. I've seen much smaller groups with much less funding at least be able to maintain the most basic online presence. As Maggie Smith said in "Murder By Death": "That's tacky. That's really tacky."

When the Cuyahoga County admin HQ is at 9th and Euclid, that spot would be a little more viable.

Cooperstown was competing with the Winking Lizard, Paninis, and a few other sports-bar-esque spots within a few blocks. The problem is they're a bit of a schlep from the main employment centers (Public Square, East 9th north of Euclid), and I recall they got some less-than-favorable reviews. If they had been located in the Waterhouse/Phil the Fire/Diamondback spot, that would have been a better fit, imho.
