Now we see the impact of the moronic anti-home rule laws being put forth by the blubberbutt Grendell from Geauga County. Of course, he spins it as "simplifying the laws" - well, one-size-fits-all laws simply can't work in a state like Ohio.
  2. ^Har dee har har... no, I just have some galpals who have had their own bad run-ins with aggressive panhandling.
  3. Typical Joel Kotkin - everything he writes has a pro-highway lobby, anti-city slant.
  4. ""Lakewood has more gay residents per-capita than any city outside San Francisco." How does one come to this conclusion? It's not a box on the Census form you check, is it? Did a surveyor go door-to-door and ask "Are you gay?" ^Thank you! I don't live in Lakewood so really folks - it can't possibly be that gay. One more - "Key Tower is the tallest building between NYC and Chicago". No it isn't, unless Atlanta has suddenly relocated off the Atlantic coast, and Toronto has been moved to California.
  5. The homeless don't bother me, and most truly homeless aren't lingering around downtown. I don't mind someone sitting off to the side of the sidewalk, shaking a cup or holding a sign asking for help. I don't give them money, but at least they aren't obstructing traffic or harassing people. What bothers me are the aggressive panhandlers who have 1. spit at me, 2. called me f@ggot (fortunately my friends held me back or I would have been hauled in for homicide) and other names, 3. followed me while I was on my phone. "I'm sorry.. panhandlers/homeless people in downtown cleveland is nothing!" As a 6'4" male, I'm sure it's easy for you to say that. Try being a single female wanting to live in Cleveland and feeling safe after dealing with the types of aggressive tactics I've described.
  6. Okay, this morning I have to give some very deserved praise to the DCA Ambassadors. You know how in wintertime, the snowplows clear the streets and thus leave four-foot "hills" piled up at the curbs and crosswalks? This morning, for the first time in the ten years I've worked downtown, the Ambassadors were out clearing the crosswalks/curbs. No more trying to stretch and leap over the piles of snow, no more trying to find a solid spot for footing only to be up to my thigh in snow, and no more soaking wet socks all day. As much as I used to love pretending I was ascending the Alps on my way to work, I'm so glad they were out this morning. Thank you DCA Ambassadors :-)
  7. Oh what the heck, let's take another gander at how the BofA logo would look on Key Tower
  8. "I'd say that Cleveland has the gay bar scene (though its gay bar scene is close to lakewood's borders and in Ohio City)." That's correct - there are no gay bars in Lakewood. Twist is located on Clifton, just next to the border but it's in Cleveland proper. There are two others located on Detroit near West 112th but again - both in Cleveland city limits.
  9. Thank you for the effort - it's much appreciated! I think you've done an impressive job so far :-) I do have some critiques - I like the idea of the collage background but it needs to be simplified a little, imho. I don't care for the darker bar beneath the collage - it adds clutter without really tieing the page together. I presume the OpenSourceMatters is a banner-ad placeholder? Also, I've taken a screencap - keep in mind that I'm regrettably on OS9.2 at work (OSX at home, thank god) so maybe it's only showing like this because I'm forced to use IE5. At home, I use Firefox. I clicked on the Northeast Ohio section - I really don't like the smaller window compared to what exists now. Also, it's fine for the navigation menu to read "NE Ohio" for space constraints but the content page should have "Northeast" (and so on) spelled out.
  10. It's likely that it would have some negative impact on Cleveland's economy - there would be staff reductions in the executive ranks as well as the elimination of redundant positions (human resources, etc.). If BofA did select Cleveland to be the midwest HQ, it's conceivable that there would be growth. It's really a speculative issue right now. What's interesting is that Bank of New York just announced today that they'll be buying Mellon, based in Pittsburgh.
  11. Over the weekend, my S.O. and I took a little jaunt over to the Artcraft Building on Superior Avenue. It's located at 2570 Superior (East 25th and Superior). I didn't get a shot of the exterior but here's a small pic from the artistsofcleveland.com site: The Artcraft Building was the site of the 19th annual Open Studio show and sale. Lots of cool work by a variety of artists, and great views of the city to boot. Here's a sample of what I saw that day: Heading out up West 14th, there's a nice a glimpse of 200 Public Square (with Terminal Tower casting a cool shadow): The standard Innerbelt shot: With a zoom on the AT&T Building, Cleveland Trust Tower, and Jacobs Field: Stupid RTA - don't they know I was trying to get a shot at 60mph?!? Once at the sale, we check out some great photo work: And more great photo work: Like I said, this building has some great views - you could see the Lake, and thus - this freighter making its way from the port: Pulsar Paper - holy crap, these people were making a killing - every other person had some kind of roll of paper. Any kind, any color - they had it! On the top floor was an arrangement of all kinds of artists - metalsmiths, glassblowers, painters, etc. Peeking out the windows, I got some nice shots to the east. You can see the Nottingham-Spirk headquarters and St. Ann's Church in Cleveland Heights from here. Most of the western facing windows weren't accessible. Looking up Superior, we see Tyler Village - a series of huge warehouse buildings being renovated for live/work space: The church is St. Josaphat's - now converted into art gallery space: The large highrise in the center is Willson Towers, located at East 55th and Chester: A closer look at the Tyler Village project: The mammoth Masonic Auditorium and the glassy Applied Industrial Technologies HQ: A closer look: A lot of kids were at the show: A southern view, showing Fenn Tower (on Cleveland State University's campus) at the right, and the Euclid Avenue Methodist Church on the left. A closer view: Lots of colorful pieces for sale: As we left the Artcraft Building, this view stopped me in my tracks - the sunlight was at a perfect level with the downtown skyscrapers: I give this nifty little building a few months before it's occupied: Heading back towards the Innerbelt, I snap a pic of Chester Avenue, with Cleveland State's campus on the left: Finally on the Innerbelt - I'd love this view if it weren't for the wires: A view up East 9th Street: Good night!
  12. What the flying f#ck kind of annoying use of Flash navigation is that shite?
  13. Being about one block from it, I'm glad the turbine's off. I'd hate to have to dodge that thing if it ever flew up East 9th!
  14. They have Abita Amber on tap at Prosperity - my S.O. really likes it.
  15. If Great Lakes isn't on tap, I'm willing to try other microbrews (Bells, etc.) but I honestly can't stand light beers. They're like decaf coffee - what's the point?
  16. "I get so tired of hearing about the damn river fire." I know what you mean, but if it weren't for that, we might not have my beloved favorite brew. :drunk: Not to mention, I really love the artwork on the label:
  17. KJP, you're right - we should be hearing that they have a strategic planning process. But we should be hearing it directly from them, and not a leak through one of our forumers (and I am not taking anything away from MGD). Let's see... 1. An updated web site. Updated press releases. Updated newsletters. That is, presuming they've actually done press releases and newsletters since 2005. 2. Email listings for primary contacts. This is 2006. They have enough money to buy spam filters. 3. Instead of picking up cigarette butts from around the Board of Education building (which they seem to do EVERY day), the ambassadors could give the heave-ho to the homeless Yeti who uses the Rockwell Building's front as his kitchen and restroom. I really love having to hop over the stream that flows across the sidewalk. 4. On that same note, if for some namby-pamby reason he can't be vacated - powerwash his squatting point once in a while.

Are you really that much of a geek that you'd drive out of your way, just to see a particular view of the skyline? J/K
  19. I was NOT a mistake... well, they wanted to have me four years later than my brother (rather than a year) but mince mince. I'm talking about baby/infant age pictures - the older ones always have more - and we remember. Oh yes, we remember Back to the Corner Alley, I don't know how they're doing the special opening - I'm only there by associaton :|
  20. I really don't see how this is an appropriate topic here. The Museum Plaza thread at least involves a distinctive project - this is a stadium expansion and belongs somewhere else (and I don't mean on urbanohio.com).
  21. It's before the public opening - I'll have my camera there. "Mayday: You and her would get along great... maybe too great." Well, she and I at least understand that: 1. The world revolves around us. 2. We are the "Chosen Ones". 3. Once everyone else understands that, we make much more sense. 4. Once everyone realizes that what they perceive as our over-developed "youngest child entitlement" is actually the true Order of the Universe, the world will be a happier place. 5. If for some inexplicable reason the world doesn't revolve around us (perish the thought), we go off in our own little world. 6. There is no explanation needed beyond "because I'm the baby!". That answers all questions about our behavior. 7. Much of our vengeance is based on the fact that we have far fewer baby photos than our older siblings. Parents-to-be, you have been warned. "I'm the "Baby" and all I ever got was forgotten or confused for being older than I was!" MTS - that's such a sad story. One I cannot possibly begin to fathom

Sorry - gonna cheat with two pics. Both taken with a Minolta Z6 (6MP, 12x Optical Zoom). Now that deck has a nice view: Probably my favorite but most inaccessible vantage point of the skyline. From I-490 - it's not exactly safe to pull over on the berm, so I apologize for the blur, the barrier, the fence...
  23. It's not Jenga, it's a Space Invader!

Folks - this thread has been cleaned up and I expect it to stay that way. If you're about to post a comment - ask yourself if it would be considered "work safe", and ask yourself if it would be acceptable in mixed company. If it isn't, don't post it - it will be deleted. Thank you!
