CLEVELAND - At the Clinic and it AIN'T pretty!
No, no nasty surgery photos or anything like that. I was taking photos for a work-related project and took a few extra shots. For being a truly world-class facility when it comes to healthcare, the Cleveland Clinic's built environment and surrounding neighborhood are really atrocious. I don't always take photos of the pretty stuff and this thread will fill my quota for a while. The Intercontinental Hotel - a lovely hotel, but why the useless treelawn on Carnegie? Is that supposed to be "greenspace"? A bustling retail strip? Errr... Someone, please explain this to me: The tower of St. Lukes Hospital, now site of a large residential development: I'm not seeing spinoff/ripple effect economics happening here: Does anyone know what church this is? One redeeming structure in this mess: The beautiful University Club building, surrounded by crap. A water treatment plant - I'll remember the name some other time. I'm not the least bit religious but I find a lot of irony in this church - gated parking, and even the front door is gated. I see it's not just the Clinic that has a bunker mentality in this neighborhood: At some point this area had buildings on it: Nice and inviting environment you got there! The Cleveland Play House - the newer portion was designed by Philip Johnson: The construction site on the left of this photo is the future site of an 11-story parking garage - aka another lovely vantage point to take photos of downtown! Hope you enjoyed, I personally threw up in my mouth just a little bit.

Cleveland: Downtown: The Avenue District
It's not the sidewalks that already exist, it's the fact that the medians are much like the Detroit-Superior Bridge pedestrian strips pre-Promenade. Can you imagine such a median on Euclid? Euclid is about the same width across as East 12th - imagine how much of a pain in the arse it would be if you had to walk from East 12th down to East 9th just to cross the street? When I went over that way today, it pissed me off that short of hopping up on the medians, I had no choice but to stay on the western sidewalk. I loved the shade given by the trees, but those god-awful medians were as un-pedestrian friendly as it gets. If there is/was a way to have the older trees with a pedestrian friendly paving down the center, I'd be all for it. I don't disagree that money might have been better spent on Perk Park, but it's another case of the money being earmarked. A developer can't take money allocated for street improvements and spend it on greenspace improvements - I'm not saying that's how things SHOULD be, but that's how they are. :|

Riiiight... it's just those pesky IP addresses don't match! ;-) Of course, having two screen names ALSO violates forum rules... :whip:

I'm not a fan, but I'm reserving judgement to see the final product. I would have preferred to keep the trees but to add a sidewalk around the median. That way, people could actually use it to walk on.

Well I know not everyone will be happy to see this but here is a pic of East 12th, showing the median sans trees:

Cleveland Hopkins International Airport
From my limited experience, I've had good luck calling ahead with Yellow. One time I needed a ride from Lake/West 104th to the Rapid station at West Blvd., and I called the dispatcher and said "sorry it's a short distance" and they replied "not a problem, we're happy for your business." Also, if you have a decent ride, and your cabbie gives you a card for repeat business - use it.

^Yep. There was recently a pizza place at the same location but it tanked. With the large windows and seats/counters right at the windows, it would be a good spot for a Starbucks (or preferably a well-run local spot).

^I could be wrong, but I've always felt that building would do well as a residential conversion. It's close to Gateway, Playhouse Square and CSU. The views are surprisingly good from the upper floors. A photo of the building in question:

Cleveland: University Circle (General): Development and News
"The folks on Hessler shouldn't call all the shots but they are, after all, among the few adults who actually, um, live there" Yes, but complaining that a ten to twelve story residential structure would "ruin" their neighborhood because of shadows has prevented any other adults from living there. We weren't talking about a high-rise of any sort - and I recall that was one of their biggest gripes. Sure, there needs to be better dialogue but if it ends up being "death by committee" because someone's tomato plant gets a little less sunshine, what has that dialogue accomplished?

All OHIO - Vintage images
My parents sell antique and collectible books and every now and then they find some nifty gems for me. Recently they found this book from 1912 called "Book of Ohio" - the binding was in deplorable shape but it had some great vintage images from different cities in Ohio. Enjoy. Cleveland The Arcade, view of Euclid Avenue entrance - before it was given an art-deco makeover: The now demolished Central Armory - now site of the Federal Building on Lakeside: The demolished Hickcox Building - site of National City Center: The demolished Hollenden Hotel - site of Fifth Third Center: Rockefeller's "city" home on Euclid (demolished): Forest Hill, Rockefeller's "country" home (demolished) in East Cleveland: The Schofield Building - now the Euclid and 9th Building (now covered in vinyl) The Chamber of Commerce building (demolished), site of Key Tower: The former City Hall (demolished) - now site of the Old Federal Building: The Sherrif Street Market building (demolished) - I believe this is where Jacobs Field now sits: View down Euclid Avenue: View of Public Square: Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce: Mabley-Carew: Methodist Book Concern: Odd Fellows Hall: Pickering Building: Post Office/Custom House: St. Xaviers: Union Central Life (PNC) tower: Columbus Board of Trade: Hoster Building: McCallister Building: This is one funky building! Cleveland: Downtown: East 4th Street Developments
4,500 sq. ft. would be about the size of half of Constantinos. I wonder if they're talking about the building between East 4th and the former Goldfish store.
