  1. "the Capital Savings & Trust Building, which was the tallest building in Ohio when it was built in 1906," Nice try - but at 222 feet, it was still shorter than Cleveland's Rockefeller Building built in 1903 at 230 feet. I also wonder if it was taller than the now-demolished Williamson Building (built in 1900) but I don't have a height for that.
  2. I've been asked to post these - they're from early on in the project but we love photos!
  3. My old stomping grounds (I grew up about 15 miles southwest of Boardman). It's actually more like Lorain Road in North Olmsted, or Rt. 18 in Montrose/Fairlawn.

"I do not know why she dislikes me, other than I am the ONLY person in my group to stand up to her when it’s not a good business move." That's your answer right there. As others have said, my gut reaction to what you've told us is - look elsewhere. In the meantime, if there are moments when you need to stand up to her, consider how you present your opposition. I've worked for both men and women, and one thing I've noticed is that in general, women will take things far more personally than men will. Your saying "I don't know if that's best for the business" could be coming across as questioning her competence. You may not be questioning her ability, but that's how she takes it given what you've told us. Honestly though she sounds like an insecure yet overcompensating ballbuster - no one needs to put up with that kind of sh!t.

No, a zero-tolerance policy for bullsh!t from people who have already been warned. I think most people appreciate the fact that this forum isn't inundated with trolls. When you've been an admin and/or mod on forums like this and SSP as long as I have, then you can tell me that I'm being harsh and have an itchy trigger finger.
  6. "Actually my little Keebler Elf, its Shalamar" Keebler Elf? Somebody wants to be banned permanently!
  7. Gentlemen, the group's name is spelled Shalimar. It's sad that Ritzy Saltine the Cracker Queen is the one having to inform you.

Refer to an Admin as "bozo" (or any other derogatory name) and you and this thread will be gone.

"Seems like you should put the legitamcy of your site over your bias towards a building" Don't make me laugh - this site's "legitimacy" may be questioned by the likes of you, but not by anyone else. Also, what would that tell us if people come to UrbanOhio to purchase images of Louisville, Kentucky?

It boggles my mind that the Book-Cadillac Hotel ever got to this point, but it's great they're restoring it. I have to wonder, was the copper on these stripped by scavengers?
  11. Yeah, but he makes cool diagrams!
  12. ^Typical gloom and doom from the Plain Dealer. Do you think a new business opening on Euclid will get front page treatment? I'm sorry for the owner to go out of business but at the same time, the place didn't exactly have an inviting appearance and it's not like gyros are hard to come by. My question is this - knowing that ECTP was coming, what (if anything) did they do ahead of time? If they kept going business as usual without trying to promote their business a little extra, is it any wonder they closed?
  13. You take the alcoholics, I'll take the lushes :drunk:
  14. The only thing I care about this weekend is finding a place to have a decent lunch that has: 1. Christmas Ale on tap. 2. No plans of showing the OSU/Michigan game. Since my usual haunt (South Side in Tremont) is having some massive game party/event, any suggestions are welcome :-)
  15. ^^You're a short walk from Constantinos, and a Rapid stop (or bus ride or taxi ride) from West Side Market and Daves in Ohio City. A taxi ride taken on rare occasions is still significantly cheaper than car expenses - believe me, I know. You do have to make an adjustment in that you tend to shop as you need things rather than stock up on bulk purchases, but that's how people shop in thriving urban areas. When they need a car for stock-up trips, they rent, cab, or car-share. Retail... well, you got a point there.

This building is no ESB, and Louisville is no NYC.
  17. My mom also taught Head Start and I also accompanied her on home visits, and while I'm sure there are plenty of "lost causes", there are also plenty of kids who benefit from the program and go on to break the cycle of poverty. You say that "these families make choices" - you're forgetting that no child ever asks to be born into such horrible situations. Not all of the parents chose to be in dire financial straits - some have (aka substance abuse), but others are on disability for legitimate reasons. I absolutely support accountability for Head Start funding, but removing yet one more means of support for people who have so little is flat-out cruel.

necromantical, I think you're still buying into the perpetuation of the "Bilbao Effect" that Gehry's design accomplished for a sleepy industrial port town in Spain. Sure, there may be a boost in tourism for Louisville but you're really stretching it if you think millions of people the world over will make some pilgrimage to see this project. Sure, it will add a significant structure to the skyline and serve as a nice observation deck. But with Bilbao, you had the backing of a world-reknown art museum putting their efforts behind what was at the time a building design that shattered most peoples' ideas of what architecture should be. Museum Plaza is certainly different but people won't be standing at its base or in the public plaza and wonder "how on earth did they manage to build this?". They won't be wondering how the structure itself manages to stand up. They are still saying that about the Bilbao Guggenheim. The problem with having a beautiful public space in a building like this is that given modern security concerns, I seriously doubt one will simply be whisked up the escalator/elevator at their leisure. Most insurers would drop that notion in a heartbeat - so obviously there will have to be security stations to pass through at street level. That alone creates a hindrance to pedestrian flow which contradicts how public plazas become vibrant spaces.
  19. Thanks for the update, OompaLoompa - they had a decent site before this, but this new layout is much more appealing. MTS, East 4th aka MRN is not a CDC. Historic Gateway is a CDC, but MRN is a private development company.
  20. "a Twinkie theme for the area." Uhhh... WT flying F?
  21. I imagine it was along the lines of this article: http://www.cleveland.com/business/plaindealer/index.ssf?/base/business/1163496808106270.xml&coll=2
  22. ^And I can have the urge to tote around a full glass of red wine while tipsy!

MTS, why do you care? Don't you think it's offensive to be judged by your sexuality? So why would you judge someone else by suggesting that who they are isn't valid - that they have to be pigeonholed one way or the other?

I have to ask - is it really worth the $12 ($15 on weekends) admission? I mean, I absolutely love Miró, Gaudí, etc. but the weekend price is more than double what they used to charge for special exhibits and at least rest of the museum was open. Honestly that seems rather absurd that they double the price without having anything beyond the exhibit itself.
